feat(files): preserve inode when overwriting artifacts - #11

feat(files): overwrite existing files without replacing their inode
Tiny Sweeper reviewReviewed head: Verdict: Ready for maintainer review · Priority: none Diagnostics and supporting detailsFull summaryPull request purpose (title): feat(files): preserve inode when overwriting artifacts. The description states the change preserves the artifact overwrite operation that updates an existing reserved file in place, retaining its inode and filesystem permissions, while keeping the TSD 2.1 BlobFileStore as the primary storage path, and notes it rolls up two fork PRs plus the merge of canonical main. Tiny Sweeper completed its review; deterministic results follow. The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `5286cb6c9838`), so retrieved context may be out of date. Review snapshot
Completeness: Complete What changedThe pull request restores a filesystem-backed FsFileStore in crates/tiny-artifacts/src/file_store.rs, implemented over cap-std's Dir/OpenOptions rather than direct path-based tokio filesystem calls. overwrite_existing is routed through overwrite_existing_with_hook, which validates the key, runs the file work in spawn_blocking, canonicalizes the root, opens it as a Dir, resolves the target via canonical_relative_target, confirms it is a regular file, and opens/truncates/writes in place (preserving inode and permissions, non-atomic). read is routed through read_with_hook, put writes to a create_new staging file via write_staging_file (with sync_all and cleanup on failure) then renames into place after create_parent_directory builds parents, and metadata/delete_prefix resolve targets through canonical_relative_target with NotFound handling. crates/tiny-artifacts/Cargo.toml adds cap-std.workspace = true and the root Cargo.toml adds cap-std and extends tokio features. New tests in file_store_tests.rs add staging-cleanup, parent-swap race tests for overwrite and read, and the earlier overwrite, round-trip, and rejection tests, and a Debug assertion is added. lib.rs re-exports FsFileStore. README and CHANGELOG documentation are updated. The latest-push delta is unavailable, so no push-level delta is described. Features

to regular files beneath the root, and write to that canonical target.
- Around line 273-292: Update `FsFileStore::put` to remove the staging file if
`tokio::fs::write` fails, then return the write error with its existing context.
Preserve the current rename-failure cleanup behavior.

root-anchored, descriptor-safe resolution that enforces containment as the file
is opened, rather than canonicalizing and then reading the original path. Ensure
canonicalization failures cannot bypass containment, and preserve the existing
policy allowing symlinks that resolve within the configured root.

…ed prefixes Adds tests for filesystem store edge cases: metadata and delete_prefix treat a missing root as absent or empty, put fails and cleans up its temporary file when the target is a directory or the parent is a regular file, and delete_prefix follows an in-root symlink to remove the target's contents. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
…rage Reintroduce `FsFileStore` so callers that explicitly manage a local root can keep file bytes on disk, with keys confined beneath that root and symlink escapes rejected. Ordinary `put` now syncs a staging file before replacing the destination, and a missing root is reported as an absent file rather than an error. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Metadata lookups now return None when the path exists but is a directory, matching the behaviour already used for a missing root. The error context for failed removals also renders the path with display() so non-UTF-8 names are reported correctly, and a test covers the new directory case. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests asserting that filesystem operations surface errors when the store root is nested under a regular file, and that delete_prefix reports an error when the target is a file rather than a directory. Both cases also verify the underlying file is left untouched. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Synchronize the directory after the rename.
write_staging_file synchronizes the staging file, but put returns after rename without synchronizing the directory entry. If power fails after a successful put, the new or replacement key may not survive. Synchronize the containing directory after the rename. When put creates parent directories, persist those new directory entries as well. (man7.org)

Summary
Restore
FsFileStorefor callers that explicitly manage a local filesystem root, while keeping the TSD 2.1BlobFileStoreas the host-bound storage path. The filesystem adapter confines keys to the configured root, handles missing roots consistently, resolves in-root symlink prefixes for deletion, and cleans up staging files after write or sync failures. Its public docs describe the operational limits of atomicputand in-placeoverwrite_existing.This rolls up fork PR #4 (TinyTools 0.6 alignment) and fork PR #5 (inode-preserving overwrite), plus canonical
main.Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#8088.
