Pin gemini-3.5-flash and report a Gemini 404 as a retired model - #19
Every Gemini-backed web_* call (web_search, web_research) failed in production with BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE: upstream unavailable: gemini answered with status 404: the pinned default model gemini-2.5-flash has been retired by Google. This PR moves the pin to gemini-3.5-flash (a pinned name, not a moving alias such as gemini-flash-latest) and makes a Gemini 404 say what it almost always means, so the next retirement is obvious rather than hidden behind a bare status code.
Evidence, with the real key, through supermath-mcp call web_search and SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL set:
gemini-2.5-flash: 404
gemini-3-flash-preview, gemini-3.5-flash, gemini-3.7-flash, gemini-3.8-flash, gemini-flash-latest: ok
echo'{"question":"What is the Jacobsthal function?","limit":2}' \

API or behavior changes
supermath_web::DEFAULT_MODEL is now "gemini-3.5-flash".
New public variant supermath_web::Error::ModelNotFound { model }, returned by GeminiClient::generate when Gemini answers 404. It still maps to BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE, but the message now reads: gemini has no model named <model>; it may be retired, so set SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL to a current pinned model name. This addition breaks any exhaustive match on Error outside the crate. None exist in this workspace.
Other non-success statuses still come back as Error::Unavailable, as before.
cargo build --release -p supermath-mcp, then the command above with noSUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL override: outcome: ok, usage.model: gemini-3.5-flash, 6 findings, 2 sources (arXiv, OEIS).
Tests
I wrote these first and watched them fail against the unfixed code:
config::test::the_default_model_is_pinned_to_gemini_3_5_flash: failed with left: "gemini-2.5-flash", right: "gemini-3.5-flash". Changing the pin later has to be a deliberate edit here.
tests/web/gemini.rs::a_404_says_the_model_may_be_retired_and_names_the_override: failed with upstream unavailable: gemini answered with status 404.
tests/web/search.rs::a_404_for_the_model_is_backend_unavailable_and_names_the_model_and_override: failed the same way. This one checks the envelope code, a message that names the model, says "may be retired" and names SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL, and that the key never leaks.
Updated:
error::test::maps_every_variant_to_its_documented_code now includes ModelNotFound.
Integration assertions that hard-coded gemini-2.5-flash (the request path, usage.model, client.model()) now use DEFAULT_MODEL, so the pin lives in one test. Fixture modelVersion fields were updated to match.
Documentation
crates/supermath-web/README.md: new default, plus a "Retired models" bullet.
docs/specs/toolkit/web/README.md: the 404 behaviour.
docs/specs/toolkit/web/tools/web_search.md: the BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE row now covers a 404 for the model. web_research.md defers to this table.
.env.example: the new default, plus a note on retired names.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Updated the default Gemini model to gemini-3.5-flash.
Bug Fixes
Gemini 404 responses are now reported as BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE, with an error message identifying the unavailable model and explaining how to configure a current model.
Documentation
Updated setup and web search guidance to reflect the new default and explain how Gemini model 404 errors are handled.
Add a test asserting that DEFAULT_MODEL is gemini-3.5-flash, so that
changing the pin has to be a deliberate edit rather than an accidental
one when Google retires model names.

Add a test asserting that a 404 from the Gemini API produces an error
naming the configured model, mentioning that it may be retired, and
pointing at the SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL override.

Add a test asserting that a 404 from the model surfaces as BackendUnavailable and that the error message names the default model, notes it may be retired, and points at the SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL override.

Add a ModelNotFound variant to the web error enum so a 404 from Gemini for an unknown model is reported clearly, hinting that the model may be retired and that SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL should be set to a current pinned name.

Include the ModelNotFound variant in the match arm that classifies errors, so it is treated consistently with the other client-side failures instead of falling through.

A 404 from the Gemini API previously fell through to the generic unavailable error, hiding the fact that the configured model does not exist. The client now returns a dedicated model not found error carrying the model name so callers can surface a clearer message.

Add the missing ModelNotFound case to the GeminiClient error list so callers know a 404 means the model name is likely retired.

Move the pinned default model to gemini-3.5-flash and document that Google

…ssertions
Update the Gemini fixtures to report gemini-3.5-flash and replace hardcoded model strings in the web tests with supermath_web::DEFAULT_MODEL, so the tests track the default model instead of breaking whenever it is bumped.

Extend the error mapping test to assert that the ModelNotFound variant maps to BackendUnavailable, matching the documented behaviour for the other backend failures.

The web toolkit docs now explain that a 404 from Gemini is surfaced as

was updated to gemini-3.5-flash to match.

Pull request purpose (title): Pin gemini-3.5-flash…
Diagnostics and supporting details
Full summary
Pull request purpose (title): Pin gemini-3.5-flash and report a Gemini 404 as a retired model. This PR addresses production failures where Gemini-backed web_search/web_research calls returned BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE with a bare 404 because the pinned default model had been retired. It moves the default pin to gemini-3.5-flash and adds a dedicated Error::ModelNotFound variant so a Gemini 404 is reported with a message naming the model, stating it may be retired, and pointing at SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL. The tests lane is answered and reports the new 404 branch is covered at both client and tool levels and would fail if the handling regressed; commits and description lanes are answered with nothing reportable. The latest-push delta is unavailable. No findings are reported across the lanes that answered.

What changed
GeminiClient::generate now branches on a 404 status and returns the new Error::ModelNotFound { model } (crates/supermath-web/src/gemini/mod.rs#impl GeminiClient), which maps to BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE via Error::code (crates/supermath-web/src/error/mod.rs#impl Error). The default model pin moves to gemini-3.5-flash (crates/supermath-web/src/config/mod.rs#use std::time::Duration), with fixtures, docs, README and .env.example updated to match. The Error enum gains a variant, which breaks exhaustive external matches (crates/supermath-web/src/error/mod.rs#pub enum Error).
Features
Modified — Docs and fixtures aligned to the new model and 404 behavior: The crate README, web toolkit spec docs, .env.example and JSON test fixtures now describe the new default and the 404-means-retired behavior, so operators following the docs get the correct model name and remediation guidance. (crates/supermath-web/README.mdthe three, `register(&mut registry)` adds them to a `ToolRegistry`., docs/specs/toolkit/web/README.mdresponse's `candidates[0].groundingMetadata` carries what we keep:, docs/specs/toolkit/web/tools/web_search.mdany instruction a page carried, is dropped., .env.exampleCORTEX_API_KEY=supermath-local)
Tests
No supported feature-to-test mapping was produced. Test execution is not inferred.

Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The change adds a 404→`ModelNotFound` branch in `GeminiClient::generate`, a new error variant, a default-model bump, and tests that pin the new branch at both the client and tool levels (message contents, error code, no key leakage). The branch is covered and the error-path test would fail if the 404 handling regressed; the remaining diff is documentation and fixture model strings. I found nothing reportable.

description
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The description matches the diff: the model pin moves to `gemini-3.5-flash`, a new `Error::ModelNotFound` is returned on a Gemini 404 with the quoted message and maps to `BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE`, and the README, spec docs, `.env.example`, fixtures and tests are updated as described (including the deliberate API-break note about exhaustive matches). I could not find `gemini_stub` or `Response` via the searches I ran, but both are used consistently in two test files and the description says the suite passes, so I have nothing reportable against the change itself.
The default Gemini model changes to gemini-3.5-flash. Gemini HTTP 404 responses now produce a model-specific error mapped to BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE. Tests, fixtures, and documentation reflect these changes.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Update the default model pin .env.example, crates/supermath-web/src/config/*, crates/supermath-web/tests/fixtures/*, crates/supermath-web/README.md
The default model changes to gemini-3.5-flash. Configuration tests and response fixtures use the new model name.
Map model 404 responses to a dedicated error crates/supermath-web/src/error/*, crates/supermath-web/src/gemini/mod.rs
Error::ModelNotFound carries the model name and maps to BackendUnavailable. GeminiClient::generate returns this error for HTTP 404 responses.
Validate and document the 404 response crates/supermath-web/tests/web/*, crates/supermath-web/README.md, docs/specs/toolkit/web/*
Web tests check the error message, error code, and absence of an API key in the envelope. Documentation describes the model 404 response and SUPERMATH_WEB_MODEL override.
The new default model is deprecated and silently redirected to a different model, which breaks the project's own pinning guarantee. Choose a supported pinned model before merging. Also make the 404 handling confirm that the missing resource is the model before giving retirement advice.

L88: # Gemini deprecations
L89:
L90: This page lists the known deprecation schedules for 【7†stable (GA)】 and 【8†preview】 models and for managed agents in the Gemini API. A "deprecation" is the announcement that we no longer provide support for a model, and that it will be "shut down" in the near future. Once a model is "shutdown", it is completely turned off, and the endpoint is no longer available.
L91: Deprecation announcements are made on the 【9†Release notes】 page, and the announced earliest shutdown dates are tracked on this page. Already-shutdown models are indicated with gray backgrounds.
L92:
L93: Note: The shutdown dates listed in the table indicate the earliest possible dates on which a model might be retired. We will communicate the exact shutdown date to users with advance notice to ensure a smooth transition to a replacement model.

## Choosing the right Flash or Flash-Lite model
Use this table to select the right model and migration path for your workloads.
Both models require removing deprecated sampling parameters (`temperature`, `top_p`, `top_k`) and prefilled model turns. See API changes for details.
Model | Primary use cases | Recommended migration target
--- | --- | ---
Gemini 3.6 Flash
`gemini-3.6-flash` | Code generation, spatial/multimodal reasoning, multi-step agentic workflows | Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3 Flash (Preview), or Gemini 3.1 Pro
Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite
`gemini-3.5-flash-lite` | Autonomous subagent execution, high-volume data analysis and document extraction, structured JSON parsing | Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite or Gemini 2.5 Flash
## Antigravity agent support
Note: This feature requires the Interactions API. Gemini 3.6 Flash introduced support for the Antigravity agent. For current agent usage and code samples, see the Interactions API guide and the Gemini 3.8 Flash guide.
## API changes and parameter updates
Starting with Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, the following API changes apply to these models and all future Gemini model releases.
* Sampling parameter deprecation: `temperature`, `top_p`, and `top_k` are deprecated. The API ignores these parameters and returns an error in future model generations.
* Prefilled model turn validation: Prefilling model turns is no longer supported. If the last non-empty turn in the request is a `model` turn, the API returns a `400` error.
The following sections provide detailed explanations and code samples for each API change.
### 1. Sampling parameter deprecation (`temperature`, `top_p`, `top_k`)
`temperature`, `top_p`, and `top_k` are deprecated and ignored. In future model generations, supplying these parameters returns an HTTP 400 error. Remove these parameters from all requests.
`# ⚠️ Remove these parameters (deprecated)
generation_config = {
"temperature": 0.7,
"top_p": 0.9,
"top_k": 40,
## Migration checklist
Note: If you're building with the Interactions API, you can automate this migration with a coding agent that supports skills (like Antigravity).
### Gemini 3.6 Flash
1. Install the skill:
`npx skills add google-gemini/gemini-skills --skill gemini-interactions-api --global`
2. Apply the skill:
`/gemini-interactions-api migrate my app to Gemini 3.6 Flash`
### Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite
1. Install the skill:
`npx skills add google-gemini/gemini-skills --skill gemini-interactions-api --global`
2. Apply the skill:
`/gemini-interactions-api migrate my app to Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite`
### Migrate to gemini-3.6-flash
* Update Model ID: Change your target model string to `gemini-3.6-flash`.
* Apply parameter updates: Remove deprecated sampling parameters (`temperature`, `top_p`, `top_k`), `candidate_count` (unsupported in Gemini 3 and later), and prefilled model turns as detailed in API changes and parameter updates.

Replace the deprecated model alias.
Google documents gemini-3.5-flash as deprecated and automatically routed to gemini-3.6-flash. This violates DEFAULT_MODEL's requirement to use a pinned model name that never moves. Select a supported model and update the model-dependent request behavior and documentation. If you select gemini-3.6-flash, remove or revise the existing temperature: 0 parameter because Google ignores deprecated sampling parameters for that model.

Update DEFAULT_MODEL to use a supported, pinned model identifier instead of the
deprecated alias, and align model-dependent request behavior and documentation
with the selection. If selecting gemini-3.6-flash, remove or revise the

Confirm a model error before returning ModelNotFound.
If the configured endpoint returns 404 for a different missing resource, this branch still says the model may be retired. Google defines GenerateContent NOT_FOUND as a missing requested resource and supplies error details in the response body. Inspect those details before selecting ModelNotFound; keep other 404 responses generic. Add a non-model 404 case to the stub tests. (ai.google.dev)
Based on learnings, “do not treat a status code alone … as sufficient to infer a specific error condition.”
