Summary

Fortune loop runs lost web search for more than a run. Gemini was answering every request with 402 Payment Required because the key ran out of credit. The failure went unnoticed for two reasons:

  • the client mapped 402 to BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE, so seats read it as a transient outage;
  • supermath-mcp check only reported whether GEMINI_API_KEY was set.

This PR fixes both:

  • 402 has its own error. It is now Error::BillingExhausted, reported as BUDGET_EXCEEDED with a message saying the key's billing or credit is exhausted.
  • check makes a real request. It sends Gemini one ungrounded, one-token request (GeminiClient::probe / WebToolkit::probe). A key that is set but unfunded (402), or one naming a retired model (404), now fails the check.

Related issue

None. Found while debugging stalled Fortune runs: in the latest run, all 43 web_search calls failed with BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE.

API or behavior changes

  • New public items:
    • supermath_web::Error::BillingExhausted;
    • GeminiClient::probe;
    • WebToolkit::probe;
    • supermath_mcp::Toolkit::web.
  • web_search and web_research on a 402: they now answer BUDGET_EXCEEDED instead of BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE.
  • check sends one tiny paid request when a key is set, and fails when Gemini refuses it.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean.
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo test: all pass.
  • cargo llvm-cov, run after a clean: every file under crates/ is at 90% or more. The edited files are at 93–100%.
  • scripts/check-crate-deps.sh: the rules hold.
  • Manual check: the deployed binary's call web_search printed gemini answered with status 402 before the key was re-funded, and answered normally afterwards.

Tests

  • Written first and confirmed failing before the fix:
    • a_402_says_the_key_is_out_of_credit_and_is_not_a_transient_outage;
    • a_probe_sends_one_ungrounded_token_request_and_reports_a_402;
    • a_gemini_key_out_of_credit_fails_the_check.
  • Also added: a_probe_of_a_funded_key_succeeds, and a BillingExhausted case in the error mapping table.
  • Updated: the existing check tests that set GEMINI_API_KEY now point SUPERMATH_WEB_BASE_URL at a loopback stub, so they never reach Google.

Documentation

  • crates/supermath-web/README.md: a new "Out of credit" bullet.
  • README.md: the check line.
  • Module docs for check and the Gemini client.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Gemini checks now make a minimal request to verify that the configured service is responding, rather than treating the presence of a key as success.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Exhausted Gemini billing or credits are reported distinctly from service outages, and checks fail when billing is unavailable.
    • Gemini rate limits and missing models are reported with more specific errors.
    • API keys remain excluded from check reports and error output.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance to explain Gemini checks and billing-related errors.

Add a test asserting that a 402 response from the Gemini API surfaces as
Error::BillingExhausted with the BudgetExceeded code and a message mentioning
credit, so the out-of-credit case is distinguished from a transient outage.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a BillingExhausted variant for Gemini 402 responses so an exhausted
key's billing or credit is reported as a spent budget rather than a
transient outage, which callers should not retry.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The error code mapping now also covers the BillingExhausted variant, so it reports BudgetExceeded instead of falling through to the default code.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Map HTTP 402 responses from the Gemini API to a dedicated BillingExhausted
error so callers can distinguish an exhausted billing account from a
generic service failure.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add the missing doc entry for Error::BillingExhausted so the list of
errors returned by the client covers the 402 case.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add the BillingExhausted variant to the table-driven test that asserts every error maps to its documented code, so the new variant is verified to report BudgetExceeded.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests asserting that a probe issues a single ungrounded request with a one-token output cap and surfaces a 402 as a billing error, and that a funded key probes successfully.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a Gemini stub helper and a test asserting that a 402 from the
generateContent endpoint fails the check with a credit-related detail and
without leaking the API key. The existing reachable-backends test now also
points the web base URL at a Gemini stub so the backend is exercised.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds a probe that sends Gemini a single-token request with no grounding or
cache, so callers can verify the API key and model without paying for a full
turn. The status-to-error mapping is factored into a shared helper reused by
generate, and the toolkit and engine expose the probe through their existing
layers.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The check now sends one ungrounded one-token request through the web
toolkit's Gemini client, so a key that is set but out of credit or bound
to a retired model fails rather than passing. The toolkit exposes its web
component to make that probe reachable, and the engine's probe
documentation now describes the ungrounded request it actually makes.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The check command test now starts a stub gemini service and points
SUPERMATH_WEB_BASE_URL at it, so the test exercises every backend the
command reports on rather than only lean and arxiv.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The `check` example comment now notes that the Gemini key check runs a one-token probe, so readers understand what that step actually does.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a troubleshooting entry explaining that a 402 from Gemini is reported as
BUDGET_EXCEEDED rather than BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE, so callers do not retry it as
a transient outage. Also note that `supermath-mcp check` probes the key with a
one-token request, so an unfunded key fails the check.

Pull request purpose (title): Report Gemini 402 as out of credit and probe the key in check. The pull request gives 402 its own error reported as BUDGET_EXCEEDED, and makes `check` send one ungrounded, one-token Gemini request so a set-but-unfunded key or a retired model fails the check.

Features

  • Added — 402 mapped to Error::BillingExhausted reported as BUDGET_EXCEEDED: An exhausted Gemini key now surfaces as a spent budget rather than a transient upstream outage, so callers like web_search and web_research do not mistake it for a blip and retry. (crates/supermath-web/src/error/mod.rs pub enum Error {, crates/supermath-web/src/error/mod.rs impl Error {)
  • Added — GeminiClient::probe one-token ungrounded key check: Provides the cheapest request that still meets billing to learn whether the key and model answer, with no search grounding and no cache, and surfaces 402/404 as distinct failures. (crates/supermath-web/src/gemini/mod.rs impl GeminiClient {)
  • Internal refactor — GeminiClient::success status-to-error helper shared by generate and probe: Centralizes the 429/404/402/other-failure status mapping so generate and probe report error statuses identically. (crates/supermath-web/src/gemini/mod.rs impl GeminiClient {)
  • Added — WebToolkit::probe and Engine::probe: Exposes the key probe through the web toolkit so the MCP check can exercise a real Gemini request without reaching into internals. (crates/supermath-web/src/toolkit/mod.rs impl WebToolkit {, crates/supermath-web/src/engine/mod.rs impl Engine {)
  • Added — Toolkit::web accessor and stored WebToolkit: Adds a new public item so `check` can probe the Gemini client held by the toolkit; the description calls out this public item. (crates/supermath-mcp/src/toolkit/mod.rs pub struct Toolkit {, crates/supermath-mcp/src/toolkit/mod.rs impl Toolkit {)
  • Modified — check probes the Gemini key instead of only reporting it set: A configured but out-of-credit key (402) or a retired model (404) now fails the check, and the key's value is never read into the report; module docs and both READMEs reflect the new behavior. (crates/supermath-mcp/src/check/mod.rs pub async fn run(toolkit: &Toolkit, config: &Config) -> Report {, README.md so they can check a candidate checkout., crates/supermath-web/README.md the three, `register(&mut registry)` adds them to a `ToolRegistry`.)

Tests

  • integration — Points the Gemini check path at a loopback stub so existing check and CLI tests never reach Google.: Lane-reported update to test wiring; execution is not claimed. The new supermath-mcp check Gemini probe can hang indefinitely if Gemini accepts the connection but never replies. Add a request timeout so the check can report a failure. The 402 mapping and the rest of the change look sound.

Explanation

The title "Report Gemini 402 as out of credit and probe the key in check" matches the main changes in the changeset. The PR adds Error::BillingExhausted, which maps Gemini 402 responses to BUDGET_EXCEEDED. It also adds a one-token Gemini probe (GeminiClient::probe, WebToolkit::probe) that the check command uses when a key is set. The title is specific and describes both primary changes. It is 61 characters, which is within a reasonable length for a title.

P2 Badge Bound the Gemini health probe with a timeout

When Gemini or a configured proxy accepts the connection but never returns response headers, this request can wait indefinitely: GeminiClient::new sets no HTTP timeout, and neither WebToolkit::probe nor check::run supplies an outer deadline. Unlike normal web searches, which run through Engine::bounded with search_timeout, the new probe therefore leaves supermath-mcp check hanging without printing its report or reaching the arXiv check. Apply a finite request or probe timeout and return Error::Timeout when it expires.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Do not report an ungrounded response as proof that web search works.

For a free-tier key on a model that permits ordinary generation but not Google Search grounding, this probe can succeed while web_search and web_research cannot perform their grounded requests. Google lists that difference for supported Flash models. Validate grounding separately, or make the check report explicitly that it verified generation only. (ai.google.dev)

⚠️ Unverified finding

Validate the probe response before returning success.

If the configured endpoint returns HTTP 200 with an invalid body, success accepts the status and this line returns Ok(()). The check then reports that the model answered although no Gemini result was received. Decode the response and reject an invalid or unusable result. (ai.google.dev)

Set a deadline on the probe request.

If Gemini accepts a connection but does not answer, send().await can remain pending. The reqwest 0.12 asynchronous client has no timeout by default, and check::run awaits this probe before it checks arXiv or returns a report. Set a request-specific timeout so the check can report a failure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
