fix(a11y): make core recovery a focus-trapped modal - #8485
Replace the non-accessible recovery overlay with the existing focus-trapped Radix-backed ModalShell.
Keep Retry and Download Latest Version actions while preventing dismissal before the core recovers.
Make handler-free shared dialogs intentionally non-dismissible rather than exposing inert close controls.
Problem
The core recovery overlay lacked dialog semantics and focus containment; keyboard users could reach blocked background UI.
Solution
Reuse the canonical ModalShell with a named description and non-dismissible policy, removing the no-op close callback and explicitly handling the optional close handler in the shared primitive.
Submission Checklist

Impact
Desktop/web recovery accessibility. No core health or restart API changes, no schema change or additional UI dependency.
Local tests: not executed in this connector-only workspace; do not interpret hosted CI as a local run.
Validation Blocked
command: Local desktop/keyboard integration smoke.
error: Not executed in this session (requires an installed desktop/web runtime and manual interaction).
impact: Hosted tests and coverage are green, but manual UX acceptance remains open for reviewers.
Behavior Changes
Intended behavior change: Replace the non-accessible recovery overlay with the existing focus-trapped Radix-backed ModalShell.
User-visible effect: Keep Retry and Download Latest Version actions while preventing dismissal before the core recovers.
Parity Contract
Legacy behavior preserved: Make handler-free shared dialogs intentionally non-dismissible rather than exposing inert close controls.
Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: app/src/components/daemon/tests/ServiceBlockingGate.test.tsx and app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.test.tsx — accessible recovery dialog and non-dismissible handler-free modal; no unrelated inference or service semantics change.

Walkthrough
ServiceBlockingGate now uses ModalShell and shared Button components for its recovery prompt. ModalShell supports an optional close handler and overlay class override. Tests cover non-dismissal behavior and recovery dialog accessibility and stacking.

Summary
Optional close handler and dismissal rules app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.tsx, app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.test.tsx
ModalShell supports an optional onClose handler and overlayClassName. It disables dismissal when no handler is provided. The dialog sets aria-modal="true", and a test checks Escape and outside-click behavior without a handler.
Service recovery prompt integration app/src/components/daemon/ServiceBlockingGate.tsx, app/src/components/daemon/__tests__/ServiceBlockingGate.test.tsx
ServiceBlockingGate uses ModalShell and shared buttons for its recovery prompt. The prompt disables dismissal, sets its stacking classes, and displays restart errors as an alert. The test checks the dialog role, modal state, stacking classes, and download button.
The recovery prompt remains open until recovery, with Retry and Download available. No identified issue blocks merging after normal checks.

What changed
ServiceBlockingGate's hand-rolled recovery overlay was replaced with a ModalShell instance carrying a fixed non-dismissible close policy (escape, backdrop and button all false), a named title and description, a test id, stacking overrides (`panelClassName="z-10002"`, `overlayClassName="z-10001"`) so it outranks mounted blockers that reach z-10000, and a footer holding the existing Retry and Download Latest Version actions now rendered as shared Button components, with the restart error shown as a `role="alert"` message. In ModalShell, `onClose` became optional in ModalShellProps and all three dismiss affordances are gated on its presence, the open-change handler calls it optionally, `overlayClassName` was added and forwarded to DialogContent, and `aria-modal="true"` is now set. Tests were added for the non-dismissible handler-free modal and updated to assert the recovery gate renders as an `aria-modal` dialog with the expected overlay and panel stacking classes.
Features
Modified — Core recovery gate rendered through the shared ModalShell: The blocking recovery prompt now uses the focus-trapped Radix-backed dialog, gaining dialog semantics, focus containment and a named description, with both portal layers stacked above global blockers so recovery takes precedence; Retry and Download Latest Version remain available while dismissal is disabled before the core recovers. (app/src/components/daemon/ServiceBlockingGate.tsxconst ServiceBlockingGate = ({ children }: ServiceBlockingGateProps) => {, app/src/components/daemon/ServiceBlockingGate.tsximport { useT } from '../../lib/i18n/I18nContext';)
Modified — Optional close handler in ModalShell with inert affordances suppressed: When no close handler is supplied, Escape, backdrop and close-button dismissal are all disabled rather than rendering controls that would do nothing, so handler-free dialogs stay open intentionally until the host recovers; the new overlayClassName prop lets callers override scrim stacking. (app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.tsxexport function ModalShell({, app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.tsxexport interface ModalClosePolicy {, app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.tsxexport interface ModalShellProps {)
Tests
unit — The ServiceBlockingGate test asserts the recovery prompt renders as a dialog named after the title with `aria-modal="true"`, that the Download Latest Version button is present, and that the dialog and overlay carry the expected `z-10002` and `z-10001` stacking classes.: These assertions would fail if the overlay regressed to a non-modal container or if the stacking overrides regressed below blockers reaching z-10000, which are the accessibility and precedence claims of the change. The critique lane confirmed these assertions are attainable with the current components. No test execution is claimed by this review. (app/src/components/daemon/__tests__/ServiceBlockingGate.test.tsxdescribe('ServiceBlockingGate', () => {)
unit — A new ModalShell case renders a shell without an `onClose` handler, fires Escape and an outside click, and asserts the dialog is still present and no close button exists.: The regression path — an inert close button or a dismissable handler-free dialog — fails these assertions if reintroduced. The tests lane noted it wanted to confirm `dismissByOutsideClick` and `flushDeferredWork` dispatch against the overlay rather than being no-ops before signing off. No test execution is claimed by this review. (app/src/components/ui/ModalShell.test.tsxdescribe('ModalShell', () => {)
Lane summary: The test update matches what the components actually render: `ModalShell` passes `aria-modal="true"`, forwards `panelClassName`/`overlayClassName` into the Radix Content and Overlay class lists, and the dialog is labelled by `titleId`, so `getByRole('dialog', { name: 'OpenHuman core is unavailable' })`, the `aria-modal` assertion, the `z-10002` panel class and the `z-10001` overlay class are all attainable with the current `ServiceBlockingGate`. I found no incorrect or unrestorable assertions. _The code index does not reflect this commit, so retrieved context may be out of date._
security
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: This change only tightens assertions in an existing Vitest test for ServiceBlockingGate, checking the recovery prompt's dialog role, aria-modal, and z-index classes. It introduces no production code, no untrusted input paths, and no security-relevant behaviour; the file is a colocated frontend unit test consistent with the repository's rule that frontend tests live as *.test.tsx under app/src using Vitest. I found no reportable defects. _The code index does not reflect this commit, so retrieved context may be out of date._
tests
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The behaviour change — `ModalShell` making `onClose` optional and gating all three dismiss affordances on its presence — is exercised by the new ModalShell test, which renders without `onClose`, fires Escape and an outside click, and asserts the dialog survives with no close button. The ServiceBlockingGate test now pins the new recovery-dialog contract (aria-modal, and both z-index overrides needed to outrank blockers at z-10000), which is the invariant the source comment claims. I want to confirm `dismissByOutsideClick` and `flushDeferredWork` in ModalShell.test.tsx actually dispatch against the overlay (rather than a no-op that would make the new test vacuous) before signing off. _The code index does not reflect this commit, so retrieved context may be out of date._

Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: The description lane found the added assertions match the ServiceBlockingGate and ModalShell changes described in the pull request, and that the description accurately covers both the primitive change (optional onClose, non-dismissible handler-free dialogs, overlayClassName) and the recovery dialog rewrite, with no defect introduced by the test-only additions.

Cover the recovery call path with a browser focus test.
The changed test checks dialog semantics, actions, and stacking, but not keyboard focus. ModalShell.test.tsx checks initial focus, while the Playwright Tab tests cover only ConnectAuthModal. Add one recovery-path Playwright test that reaches maxAttemptsReached, then keeps focus inside [data-testid="daemon-recovery-dialog"] across repeated Tab and Shift+Tab presses.
