Summary

  • Second round of EX63 CI speed-ups after ci: measure EX63 after the speed-up merges (single CI-speed branch) #8087, from the timings of run 39371566398: 74 minutes of checks run one after another, and 29.5 of the 39 minutes of core coverage are Cargo builds.
  • The core, embed, tinyhumans and CLI coverage suites become one nextest run over the union of their filters. That is one build of the product graph instead of four, and their tests now overlap.
  • On EX63, docs-drift reuses the shared build target and rustEnv that storage-schema already uses. Before, it compiled the core again in the plain target/, incrementally and with full debuginfo.
  • Every coverage suite now records Cargo's rebuild reasons (Dirty <crate>: <reason>) in the log and in ci-out/rebuilds/<suite>.log. That will identify why tests leave the build stale (see Problem).

Problem

  • The four product suites already passed identical Cargo arguments, yet Cargo rebuilt most of the graph between them:
    • Run 39371566398: the embed suite took 5m55s, and the CLI listing took 5m23s.
    • Run 39365491098: the embed suite took 5m38s, tinyhumans 4m30s, and the CLI listing 5m55s.
  • The rebuilt crates are exactly those that depend on libc or proc-macro2 (367 of 578), both of which have build scripts. Dependency-free crates such as memchr and regex were not rebuilt.
  • It happens only after a suite has run tests. A second identical invocation with no tests in between is fresh. I could not reproduce it locally: two cargo llvm-cov nextest runs on a small workspace, and a Tinymold cache restore, both stay fresh. The cause is not identified yet; the new logging is there to find it.
  • docs-drift took 315 s and 8.7 GB, compiling the core a further time.

Solution

  • scripts/ci/rust-coverage.sh, nextest runner:
    • FILTER_PRODUCT is FILTER_CORE | FILTER_EMBED | FILTER_TINYHUMANS | (FILTER_CLI_TESTS).
    • product_inventory (renamed from cli_inventory) lists the union first, which builds the graph. openhuman product suites (nextest) then runs it on the same build, with the CLI's expected-target and inventory checks unchanged.
    • The rpc, default-feature embed and tinyhumans, and TUI suites keep their own feature resolutions. They are deliberately different configurations, so merging them would change what coverage measures.
    • The cargo (non-nextest) runner is unchanged.
  • explain_rebuilds (awk) is applied to each suite's stderr with CARGO_TERM_VERBOSE=true. It keeps Dirty lines and drops verbose Running/Fresh noise. OH_COV_EXPLAIN_REBUILDS=0 turns it off.
  • scripts/ci/self-hosted/lanes-plan.mjs: on EX63, docs-drift gets the same env as storage-schema (rustEnv, CARGO_BUILD_TARGET_DIR=target/ci-private-build, STORAGE_SCHEMA_FEATURES=core-product). Hosted runners are unchanged.
  • Expected saving on a core-changing PR: about 11 minutes of repeat builds, plus about 4.5 minutes from docs-drift, plus the CLI and core tests overlapping.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated:
    • rust-coverage-status.test.mjs: one product invocation over the union filter, listed before the run; five configurations instead of eight; explain_rebuilds keeps Dirty and drops the noise.
    • self-hosted-lanes.test.mjs: on EX63, docs-drift has storage-schema's env; on hosted runners, none.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: N/A, CI scripts only (no Rust or app source).
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, no feature rows change.
  • Affected feature IDs: N/A.
  • No new external network dependencies.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, CI only.
  • Linked issue: N/A.

Impact

  • CI only. The same tests run, under the same per-test process isolation, with the same coverage reports and the same inventory checks. The per-package JUnit files for core, embed, tinyhumans and CLI become one openhuman-product-suites-nextest-.xml.

Related

  • Closes: N/A
  • Follow-up PR(s)/TODOs:
    • Fix the root cause of the post-test rebuilds once ci-out/rebuilds/ names it. That would also help the rpc, default-feature and TUI suites.
    • The 256 MB max-executable-size limit makes the core's test harness compile on every run, warm or not.
    • Runner sizing: the EX63 VM is 4 vCPU / 13 GB. Memory, which got down to 333 MiB available, is what keeps lanes serial.

📝 Walkthrough

Rust coverage now runs core, Embed, TinyHumans, and CLI packages through one nextest product suite, while retaining separate RPC, TUI, and default-feature suites. The script adds optional Cargo rebuild diagnostics. The EX63 self-hosted docs-drift lane now uses Rust environment and shared build-target settings.

Changes: Coverage and CI Lane Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unified product coverage and rebuild diagnostics
scripts/ci/rust-coverage.sh, scripts/__tests__/rust-coverage-status.test.mjs
The script uses one combined product filter for inventory and coverage execution. It can capture filtered Cargo rebuild output in per-suite logs. Tests validate five configurations, retained suites, and diagnostic filtering.
EX63 docs-drift configuration
scripts/ci/self-hosted/lanes-plan.mjs, scripts/__tests__/self-hosted-lanes.test.mjs
The EX63 lane adds Rust environment and shared build-target settings to docs-drift. Tests validate private and hosted environments.
Supporting CI contracts and fixtures
crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/ops_tests_catalog_fixture_tests.rs, scripts/__tests__/storage-bypass-debt.test.mjs, scripts/ci/module-boundaries.json
Product feature checks include inbound-queues. Git fixtures create the selected origin base ref. Module boundaries allow the documented storage-schema dependency.
EX63 CI environment pins
.github/workflows/ci-lanes.yml, scripts/ci/self-hosted/guest-image.txt
The EX63 workflow updates the Tinymold action commit. The self-hosted configuration updates the Rust CI guest image digest.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 57493

Coverage execution remains intact, but rebuild diagnostics should be truncated before relying on them for current-run troubleshooting.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 57493

Local membership checks, read-only job permissions, signed-cache configuration, and stale-image rejection remain in place. No introduced security issue was established. However, the newly pinned cache action and runner-image contents were not available for verification.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed dependencies inherit the existing EX63 job authority, including access to remote-cache authentication and signing material. Repository routing requires both PR author and triggering actor to qualify as organization members, and the caller grants read-only token permissions. The actual remote-cache tenant, consumer, and data-store exposure is not established by these files.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Compared with the full PR base, local authority controls are unchanged: checkout does not persist credentials, cache setup retains authentication and signing inputs, and cache save remains conditioned on successful setup rather than successful tests. Saving after failed or cancelled work predates this PR; it is not an established new cache-poisoning path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged EX63 scheduler enforces one concurrent lane, reducing overlap on the newly shared target. It records cancellation separately, publishes per-lane status through atomic rename, and makes waits fail when the runner exits before completion. End-to-end guest cleanup and remote-cache recovery were not verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before promoting the new pins, verify action and image provenance, preservation of signing and trusted-key semantics, cache write scope and interrupted-save recovery, and coordination of guest-image rollout and rollback with the repository pin. These checks address coverage gaps, not an observed vulnerability.

"reason": "Storage schema contract (docs/gitbooks/en/developing/architecture/storage.md, epic #7973): every module owner exports `storage_schema()` from its bus crate, behind an opt-in `storage` feature, so the host composes `storage::schema` from the contracts instead of linking implementation crates. The edge is the tinystoragedrivers ports crate only, never an implementation crate. tinystoragedrivers-core still carries async-trait/tokio/zstd in its own closure, which is not approved contract vocabulary: recorded for contract-boundary review, to be removed by splitting a ports-only crate out of tinystoragedrivers upstream."

P1 Badge Do not exempt the event-queue contract's runtime closure

Whenever check-module-boundaries.mjs audits tinyeventqueues-bus, this exception turns the tinystoragedrivers-core edge into an accepted result and stops traversing that closure; the exception's own reason notes that the closure contains async-trait/tokio/zstd. This therefore allows the new contract to retain runtime dependencies, and hides anything behind that edge, instead of requiring a ports-only contract dependency; remove the exemption and make the upstream dependency contract-only first.

Wait for the rebuild-log filter before returning from suite.

With OH_COV_EXPLAIN_REBUILDS=1, process substitution runs explain_rebuilds asynchronously. suite captures the wrapped command status, but it does not wait for the filter. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Truncate the suite log before each diagnostic run.

explain_rebuilds() appends Dirty lines with >>. When the same suite slug is reused, ci-out/rebuilds/${slug}.log retains entries from the previous invocation. Truncate the log after creating its directory.

Suggested fix
     mkdir -p ci-out/rebuilds
+ : > "ci-out/rebuilds/${slug}.log"
     CARGO_TERM_VERBOSE=true COV_SUITE="${slug}" "$@" 2> >(explain_rebuilds "ci-out/rebuilds/${slug}.log" >&2) || rc=$?

Truncate the suite-specific rebuild log before each diagnostic run, after
creating the rebuilds directory and before invoking the command that feeds
stderr through explain_rebuilds. Use the existing slug-based log path so
repeated suite slugs start with an empty log while explain_rebuilds continues
appending Dirty entries during the current run.

Measured results (EX63, PR runs):

Run Image / Tinymold Lanes (wall time) Core coverage Notes
39371566398 (before this PR) 0.3.0 74.5 min 38m45s core source changed
39402716966 0.3.0 31.5 min 18m15s the product run still rebuilt for 4m31s after the listing (wrapper clock)
39407120861 0.3.1 (rust_ci@sha256:c3a3de05…) 31 min 17m32s 12 rebuild reasons, down from 320
  • docs-drift: 315 s before, under 9 s now.
  • Root cause of the cascade: Tinymold stamped restored outputs with the wall clock, which Linux's coarse file clock lags. Fixed in fix(wrapper): stamp restored outputs from the filesystem's clock tinymold#53 (v0.3.1). The image is bumped in chore(rust-ci): tinymold 0.3.1 .github#35, and the runners were rebuilt from it.
  • Remaining: waproto 0.7.0's build script writes OUT_DIR/whatsapp.local.desc, which buffa_build registers as rerun-if-changed. So the first rebuild after a fresh build reruns it once, and that cascades to the core (about 3.5 min per job). It belongs upstream in jlucaso1/whatsapp-rust.
