What

Adds a reusable release workflow to be used in ARC, Solar and other repos later.

The new workflow is also used by dev-kit and replaces the existing release-drafter workflows.

Related to #42

Checklist

  • Tests added/updated, or confirmed that no tests are required
  • No breaking changes, or upgrade path documented above
  • Readable commit history (squashed and cleaned up as desired)
  • AI code review considered and comments resolved

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a manually initiated release process with options to preview a release, choose a version, and retry assets for an existing draft.
    • Releases are created as drafts for review. Validation checks release details and notes; missing notes can be allowed with an override. Hyphenated versions are treated as prereleases.
    • Release notes are grouped by change type and include supported breaking-change details.
  • Changes
    • Removed the previous automatic release-drafting workflow.
    • Pull requests with breaking changes in their commits must have a breaking-change title.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on configuring and using the release process, including permissions and release requirements.

Walkthrough

The pull request replaces Release Drafter with manual and reusable release workflows. It adds git-cliff configuration and release-note checks, supports draft release creation and asset-retry validation, and checks that pull request titles reflect breaking commits.

Changes: Release workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release entry point and contract
.github/workflows/release-self.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml, .github/release-drafter.yml, .github/workflows/release-drafter.yaml, renovate.json, README.md
A manual workflow passes inputs to a reusable workflow. The pull request removes Release Drafter configuration and its workflow, configures Renovate to match git-cliff versions in workflow files, and documents the release workflow.
Release-notes validation
.github/actions/check-release-notes/*, .github/workflows/test-actions.yml
The composite action checks first-parent commits against git-cliff context. It reports missing commits and fails unless forced. Tests cover mixed, forced, clean, and root-commit histories.
Release validation and draft creation
.github/workflows/release.yml, cliff.toml
The preparation job checks source refs and release context, validates eligibility and versions, and renders release notes. It can create a tag and draft release. The shared configuration controls changelog parsing and version calculation.
Asset-retry validation
.github/workflows/release.yml
The retry job rejects dry runs and checks that the requested release exists as a draft.
Breaking-commit title check
.github/workflows/conventional-commits.yml, README.md
The pull-request workflow requires a breaking title when a non-merge commit uses a breaking Conventional Commit subject. The README documents this check.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f1e21

The release workflow has several unresolved problems that can block or mis-version releases. Asset retry may fail on draft releases, breaking changes may be missed in the version or the notes, and consumers using GitHub's default merge subject can fail the notes guard. The title check can also miss breaking commits in very large pull requests. Resolve these before merging or explicitly accept them.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description provides the change summary, issue reference, and completed checklist. It omits the required Testing section and gives no test details, although the pull request adds workflow and shell-script tests. It also does not document relevant workflow changes in Notes for reviewers.

Resolution

Add a Testing section that lists the checks performed and their results. Add reviewer notes for the reusable workflow, replaced release-drafter workflows, permissions, and any breaking-change or upgrade impact. Use Closes #42 if the pull request closes the issue; otherwise state the correct relationship explicitly.

Review comments at @.github/workflows/release.yml:
- Line 65: Remove the workflow_dispatch-only condition from the default-branch
check so it runs for every release-producing call, including calls triggered by
push or other events. Preserve the check’s existing branch validation and

- Around line 151-156: Update the `missing` calculation in the release workflow
to compare commit IDs from the range against the generated release-notes
context, and include only commits absent from those notes. Preserve the existing
merge-commit normalization and filtering so commits already represented in the
notes do not stop the release when `force` is false.

tag identifies an existing draft release, and require asset jobs to depend on
its successful result before running. Ensure invalid targets, including

- Around line 126-129: Update the README’s release requirements to state that
the repository must have a prior release tag and that providing an explicit
version does not bypass this prerequisite enforced by the previous_tag check.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Count releasable commits by git-cliff’s processed classification.

raw_message contains the original commit message. Git-cliff applies commit_preprocessors before commit parsing. Therefore, a merge commit can be classified and rendered as feat, fix, or perf while its raw_message still starts with Merge pull request.

The current guard can then count zero and block automatic version selection. Use git-cliff’s processed classification for this check.
