fix(agents): keep ambient admin keys from agents and credentials from delegated cards - #201
Split out of #159 and rebased on current main (2367505): fix 13 of #159, unchanged in substance. Small and independent; it does not depend on the other parts of #159.
Overlap: #196 and #201 add a parameter on the same lines of five launch builders (TerminalManager, both bridges, both launch modules). The conflict is textual only; whichever lands second I will rebase at once, keeping both parameters as #159 had them.
It is a security fix that changes what a delegated card inherits, so it comes on its own. One commit.
Behaviour change
A subagent or a plugin-started agent that signed in only through an exported key (for example ANTHROPIC_API_KEY) now needs CANVASTTY_AGENT_PASS_ENV=ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in the environment CanvasTTY starts with, or a launch contribution's secretEnv. Sign-ins kept in the CLI's own files or the keychain are not affected, and the person's own top-level agent cards keep ordinary provider keys as before. Documented in docs/installing-and-security.md (en/ru/zh-CN) and in the delegation table of docs/agent-orchestration.md.
Problem
An agent card's environment was CanvasTTY's own environment, minus only CanvasTTY's reserved variables. So every agent, every subagent and every card a plugin started, isolated or not, got whatever was exported where the app was started: OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, GH_TOKEN, cloud credentials, and organization-level admin keys such as OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY and ANTHROPIC_ADMIN_KEY (projects, members, usage; the new openai CLI reads OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY from the environment). The isolation layer restricts files, not variables, although the docs say other agents' credentials cannot be read.
The launch builders (status hooks, browser and orchestration MCP config) also copied the person's OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, which can hold keys, into every OpenCode card. And a plugin could start a plain terminal card (sessions.create with provider terminal), which kept the whole environment, and drive it.
To reproduce: start CanvasTTY from a shell that exports OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY, let an orchestrator spawn a subagent and run env in it.
Cause
terminalEnvironment() filtered no credentials, and the agent runtime and browser bridges read process.env directly.
Fix
A new ambientProviderKeys.ts, applied once in TerminalManager.planSpawn. Every launch builder now reads the card's filtered environment, never process.env.
Admin credentials (*_ADMIN_*KEY, *_ADMIN_*TOKEN) and CanvasTTY's own (CANVASTTY_GITHUB_TOKEN, any CANVASTTY_*TOKEN / *KEY / *SECRET / *PASSWORD) never reach an agent card, whoever starts it.
The person's own top-level agent cards keep the rest of their environment, ordinary provider keys included, in every profile. A CLI signed in by API key (Claude Code with ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, Qwen Code with OPENAI_API_KEY, OpenCode, ...) keeps working.
Subagents and every card a plugin starts, a plain terminal card included, get only an allowlist: path, home, user, shell, locale, terminal, temporary and XDG folders, Windows system folders, proxy and certificate variables, EDITOR / VISUAL / PAGER, and the CLIs' home folders (CODEX_HOME, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, ...). No provider key, token, cloud credential, SSH_AUTH_SOCK or OpenCode inline config.
A plain terminal card the person starts keeps everything except CanvasTTY's own credentials, which only the app uses. Orchestrators cannot start plain terminal cards (unchanged; now tested).
What a launch sets explicitly (a launch contribution's env / secretEnv) is added on top, so a plugin that hands its agent a key keeps working.
Opt-in: CANVASTTY_AGENT_PASS_ENV=NAME[,NAME] in the environment CanvasTTY starts with keeps the listed variables for every agent card. It is read from the app's environment only, so an agent cannot widen it for itself.
On current main the plain terminal card also gets the Codex shell observer (prepareShellLaunch); it now receives the same filtered environment as the card itself instead of terminalEnvironment(). The account-home handling of #159's fix 2 is not on main, so this change passes only the environment to the bridges.
Not covered (documented): this is about inherited variables. Without the isolation layer an agent runs as the person and can still read a key from their shell profile file, and a plain terminal card runs the login shell, which reads it.
Test
tests/agent-ambient-keys.test.mjs (10 tests, fake values set on the test process only): plain terminal; the person's Claude, Codex, OpenCode and Qwen cards keep ordinary keys but get no admin or CanvasTTY credential, also under a recording isolation layer; subagents with and without a layer; a plugin-started plain terminal; an orchestrator cannot start a plain terminal; the environment actually handed to the PTY of OpenCode, Claude, Codex and Qwen subagents built through the real runtime and browser bridges holds none of the fake values; the plain terminal's Codex shell observer gets the filtered environment (the person's shell and a plugin-started one); the opt-in; case-insensitive names (Windows). tests/launch-contributors.test.mjs: a plugin-started agent drops ambient keys but gets the key its contribution names in secretEnv.
On 2367505 without the fix (only ambientProviderKeys.ts kept so the file loads), 9 of the 11 tests fail (the two that pass are the pure filter test and the orchestrator check, which main already enforces). Reverting only the bridges fails the PTY test; reverting only the shell observer line fails the observer test. With the fix all pass.
Verification
npm run build (typecheck) and npm run audit:secrets pass.
The targeted files pass (25 tests); without the fix they fail as described above.
Full suite: 2700 tests, 2694 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped (main: 2689 tests, 2683 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped; the 11 new tests are the difference).
The renderer is untouched, so the startup bundle is unchanged.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Security
Agent and plugin-launched cards now inherit a restricted set of environment variables, excluding provider keys and other sensitive credentials by default. User-started terminals and agents have separate credential-filtering rules.
Launch-provided secrets can still be passed explicitly, and additional variables can be allowed through configuration.
Orchestrators can no longer start plain terminal cards.
Documentation
Updated security guidance clarifies environment inheritance by launch type and notes that, without isolation, agents may still read shell profile files.
… delegated cards
Agent cards inherited CanvasTTY's whole environment, so every agent, every
subagent and every plugin-started card, isolated or not, received provider
API keys, tokens and organization-level admin keys (OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY,
ANTHROPIC_ADMIN_KEY) exported where the app was started.
Now an agent card never inherits admin credentials (*_ADMIN_*KEY,
*_ADMIN_*TOKEN) or CanvasTTY's own (CANVASTTY_GITHUB_TOKEN and any
CANVASTTY_*TOKEN/KEY/SECRET/PASSWORD); the person's own top-level agent cards
otherwise keep their environment, so CLIs signed in by API key keep working.
Subagents and every card a plugin starts, a plain shell card included since
the plugin drives it, inherit only an allowlist (path, home, user, shell,
locale, terminal, temporary and XDG folders, Windows system folders, proxy
and certificate variables, the CLIs' home folders); what they need beyond
that comes explicitly through a launch contribution's secretEnv. The launch
builders (agent runtime hooks, browser and orchestration bridge, OpenCode
inline config) now read the card's filtered environment instead of the
app's, so they no longer hand the person's OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT to a
delegated agent. A plain shell card the person starts keeps everything but
CanvasTTY's own credentials. CANVASTTY_AGENT_PASS_ENV in the app's
environment lists variables to keep anyway.

Walkthrough
Terminal and agent cards now use environment filters based on launch type and delegation status. The selected environment is passed to runtime and browser provider preparation. Documentation and tests describe the filtering rules and explicit secret-passing options.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 7be9a
Delegated cards may inherit a session credential on affected systems. Restrict the XDG allowlist before merging, or explicitly accept that exposure.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7be9a
The change reduces inherited credential exposure without a demonstrated expansion of access. A pre-existing path can still pass credential-bearing variables to delegated launches, so environment filtering is not a complete credential-isolation boundary.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A delegated process can read any credential-bearing value that survives inheritance. Exposure therefore follows the credentials exported into the application and their external account authority, including subagent and plugin-owned launches. The supplied finding does not identify enough credential detail to bound the affected account or organization privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained finding reports a cookie credential accepted by delegated filtering and forwarded to the PTY. Source confirms open-ended LC_ and XDG_ acceptance, although the concrete cookie variable is absent from the supplied details. The base already inherited the broader environment, so this exposure predates the PR and is not treated as an introduced or worsened architecture concern.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Delegation derives from subagent role or plugin ownership, including plugin-started plain shells. The inheritance override is read from the application's source environment rather than a child process. Explicit plugin secret contributions remain a separate, permission-gated grant resolved against the owning plugin, with core-variable collision checks at launch.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Filtering creates a fresh environment map, and the inspected provider builders consume per-launch inputs rather than replacing adapter-wide state. Browser preparation failures revoke the registered capability; failures within the planner's guarded preparation block clean up browser, runtime, and orchestration resources.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Replace open-ended LC_ and XDG_ prefix inheritance with explicit supported locale and directory names, retaining application-startup opt-in for exceptional variables. This would tighten the remaining inherited-variable boundary without presenting it as a substitute for filesystem isolation.

If CanvasTTY starts in a ConsoleKit session, XDG_SESSION_COOKIE contains a session secret. The XDG_ prefix lets a subagent or plugin-started card inherit that secret without an explicit opt-in. Allow the required XDG directory variables by name instead of accepting the whole prefix. (consolekit2.github.io)

@BIackFIame Please address CodeRabbit's XDG_SESSION_COOKIE finding before merge; the delegated environment currently accepts every XDG_ variable, including this session secret.
Two new ambient-environment tests look up uppercase PATH, while Windows may retain the key as Path.
prompt-delivery.test.mjs:167 fails with "delivery did not reach the expected stage". Please investigate this separately; its root cause has not been established.
Rebase onto current main and preserve #196's account-home parameter when composing the shared launch builders. Credential inheritance is a behavior change, so the owner must explicitly accept it after hands-on verification; green CI alone does not authorize merging.
