fix(patches): 0022 quantizes an expert's rows once; measured with real weights - #583
Fix in llama/patches/0022: the batched MUL_MAT_ID path quantized an expert's activation rows again in every (expert, column chunk) unit. ARM has no SIMD Q8_K quantizer, so on a Neoverse-N1 Qwen3-30B-A3B (Q4_K) prompt processing was 18 % slower than upstream's path at 32 threads (perf: 20.8 % in the inlined generic ggml_quantize_mat_q8_K_4x4). Every group of four rows is now quantized once into a buffer all threads share (static split, then a barrier; both skipped when no expert gets four tokens). The units then run gemm on the shared rows.
Measured with trained weights (new docs/benchmarks/moe-repack-real-weights.md): gpt-oss-20b MXFP4, Qwen3-30B-A3B Q4_K_M and OLMoE-1B-7B Q4_0 on a Zen 3 (haswell), a Neoverse-N1 (armv8.2_2, cfarm424) and an IBM z16 (z16, cfarm191, big-endian OLMoE). pp512:

Token generation is unchanged. The KLD of the batched path against upstream's is 0 for MXFP4 and Q4_0. For Q4_K it is 0.0075 because gemm and gemv round differently and the router flips experts on near ties. That is not a defect: against --no-repack, upstream's own path is at 0.0080 and the batched one at 0.0085.
The C++ guard now runs on ARM:test-cpp-linux-aarch64 builds with -DGGML_CPU_ARM_ARCH=armv8.2-a+dotprod+fp16. On plain ARMv8 nothing is repacked, so all 24 MoeRepack cases were skipped. Windows arm64 and s390x still skip them (noted in CLAUDE.md and TODO.md).
Test plan
All 14 patches apply on a fresh b11901 clone. The result is byte-identical to the measured repack.cpp. check-patches.py: 0 problems; docs/patches.md is current.
test_moe_repack on the N1 with dotprod: 25/25 passed, none skipped.
Through the jar: LlamaModel.setCpuMoeBatched alternated in one JVM on the CI-built cpu-linux-aarch64 jar (N1, 16 threads): gpt-oss-20b +63 % prompt. This ran with the first version; the fix changes only Q4_K on ARM.
CI green, and test-cpp-linux-aarch64 runs the 24 MoeRepack cases instead of skipping them.
Docs / CHANGELOG updated.
Not measured: AVX-512/AMX (sapphirerapids), zen4 and Graviton i8mm/SVE (paid instances), and the Core Ultra laptop. They stay as TODO rows.
CPU MoE prompt processing can batch routed tokens for matrix multiplication. The option is enabled by default and can be disabled for comparisons.
Performance
Reported prompt-processing improvements range from 13% to 66% across tested models and CPU architectures. Token generation performance remained unchanged in the reported tests.
Documentation
Added benchmark results and comparisons covering prompt processing, generation, and output differences across tested models and platforms.
The batched MUL_MAT_ID path gathered and quantized an expert's token
rows again in every (expert, column chunk) unit. ARM has no SIMD form of
the Q8_K activation quantizer, so with Qwen3-30B-A3B Q4_K_M on a
Neoverse-N1 prompt processing fell 18 % below upstream's path at 32
threads (21 % of the time in the generic quantizer). The rows are now
quantized once into a shared buffer, split statically over the threads,
before the units run; skipped with its barrier when no expert got four
tokens. N1, 32 threads: Q4_K 190.7 -> 215.7 t/s, MXFP4 177.0 -> 278.7,
Q4_0 705.9 -> 990.0; KLD unchanged.

The CPU patch batches routed tokens for expert matrix operations on repacked weights. It quantizes groups of four into shared storage, then uses GEMM for grouped rows and GEMV for smaller leftovers. The PR also updates ARM test configuration and adds real-weight benchmark results.
Changes: CPU MoE batched repacking
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared-row batching and matrix operations llama/patches/0022-ggml-cpu-repack-batch-the-tokens-of-an-expert.patch, CLAUDE.md, docs/patches.md
The patch reserves shared-row storage and per-thread scratch. It quantizes groups of four once, then distributes expert and column-chunk work. GEMM processes grouped rows in chunks of up to 16; GEMV handles fewer than four remaining rows.
ARM repacked-type test setup .github/workflows/publish.yml, CLAUDE.md
The aarch64 test build sets GGML_CPU_ARM_ARCH=armv8.2-a+dotprod+fp16. The test description notes that cases for types the CPU does not repack are skipped.
The documentation reports prompt-processing results across tested CPUs and models, generation measurements, and KLD comparisons. It also lists hardware and kernel cases that remain unmeasured.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: The Unreleased changelog adds a CPU MoE performance entry: expert matmuls over repacked weights batch tokens through gemm with dynamic work distribution instead of fixed-split, per-token gemv. It reports 13%–66% faster prompt processing on the listed models and CPUs, with generation unchanged, and documents the API and environment-variable options for restoring the upstream path.
observed — Modified behavior in CLAUDE.md: The 0022 description changes batching from groups of up to 16 tokens to groups of four, with each group quantized once into a buffer shared by all threads; GEMM processes chunks of up to 16 shared rows, and fewer than four remaining tokens use GEMV. It updates the reserved-work description to distinguish shared rows from per-thread scratch and adds ARM and z16 benchmark results.
observed — Modified behavior in CLAUDE.md: The test_moe_repack.cpp description adds that cases for types the running CPU does not repack are skipped, and notes that the aarch64 test build enables GGML_CPU_ARM_ARCH=armv8.2-a+dotprod+fp16 so its cases exercise repacked types.
observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Added reported trained-weight benchmark results: prompt processing was 13%–66% faster on the listed CPUs, while token generation was unchanged.

Do not label mixed-version measurements as final.
The table labels every batched value as final, but the note below says that the Qwen3 Q4_K rows for Zen 3 at 4 and 16 threads use the first patch version. Mark the patch version per row or rerun those rows with the final patch before presenting the table as final-version performance data. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
