What

resty.etcd.health_check.init() returns the module when it initializes or switches health-check modes, but a successful repeat call with the same shm_name falls through and returns nil, nil. The API docs promise health_check, err, and the documented request-handler usage can invoke initialization on subsequent requests. Preserve the existing configuration and return the module for the no-op case.

Tests

  • Added a Test::Nginx regression for repeated initialization with an unchanged shared-dict mode.
  • A task-local LuaJIT 2.1 probe with mocked ngx.shared and logging reproduced the failure before the fix and passed after it.
  • The full Test::Nginx suite and CI were not run. The configured target suite starts a real etcd cluster and requires Linux/OpenResty; no etcd service was used for this task.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Reinitializing a health check with the same shared configuration now preserves its existing settings instead of rebuilding them. The repeated initialization completes without an error, helping keep health-check behavior consistent.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage to verify repeated initialization returns the same health-check module and does not produce an error log.

Walkthrough

When health_check.init is called with the existing shared dictionary name, it now returns the existing module without rebuilding its configuration. A test verifies that repeated calls return the module without an error.

Changes: Health-check initialization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve configuration on repeated initialization
lib/resty/etcd/health_check.lua, t/v3/health_check.t
When shm_name matches the existing configuration, initialization returns the module without rebuilding the configuration. The test checks that repeated calls return the module with no error.

A failed shared-dictionary initialization can cause a later request-time failure, so the initialization guard should be fixed before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: return health check module on repeated init" matches the main change. The PR changes resty.etcd.health_check.init so that a repeated call with the same shm_name preserves the existing configuration and returns the module with no error, instead of returning nil, nil. The title names the behavior change and the affected case. It is concise, specific, and free of file lists or vague terms.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

The PR adds a real Test::Nginx request that uses OpenResty and the configured ngx.shared dictionary. Test 23 checks both initial and repeated health_check.init results, including nil errors, with clear names and assertions. Existing tests cover default, custom, invalid shared-dictionary, mode, and disabled paths. The implementation only adds the missing no-op return, preserves the existing configuration, and introduces no unrelated logic, ignored errors, mocks, hidden ordering dependency, or new concurrency risk.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security issue was introduced. The pull request only adds a no-op return in lib/resty/etcd/health_check.lua:167-168 and adds a regression test. The changed code returns the existing health-check module and does not handle credentials, authentication headers, database writes, permissions, parent-resource access, TLS settings, shared-resource deletion, or secret-reference resolution. No issues found in categories 1-7.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Do not treat an unpublished configuration as initialized.

If init({shm_name = "missing"}) fails, the local conf becomes {}, but _M.conf remains unset. A later init() matches conf.shm_name == nil and returns _M, nil here without creating a valid public configuration. The v3 request path later reads health_check.conf.retry, which can fail on nil. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Build a candidate configuration and publish it only after validation, or require _M.conf == conf before taking this fast path.
