Ubuntu VirtualBox test guest with ISF profile #313

What to build

Make vm.sh able to create a second test guest, microvmi-ubuntu: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS server installed to its disk, 2 vCPUs, 2 GiB RAM, kernel package held, base snapshot with saved state at the login prompt. Build an ISF profile for the guest kernel with dwarf2json from the matching linux-image-<ver>-dbgsym (ddebs.ubuntu.com), done on the host, and store it with a libvmi.conf entry next to the VirtualBox dev harness. microvmi-alpine stays for libmicrovmi's own tests.

Acceptance criteria

  • vm.sh creates, starts, snapshots and restores microvmi-ubuntu reproducibly (VM name selectable from the environment)
  • Guest kernel is held; the ISF profile matches the running kernel (banner/version check)
  • ISF profile and libvmi.conf entry stored with the dev harness, with a note on how they were produced
  • libmicrovmi's existing VirtualBox integration tests pass against microvmi-ubuntu (2 vCPUs) over both the VBoxVMI method and the MachineDebugger method

Completed. The revived LibVMI libmicrovmi bridge, Ubuntu VirtualBox guest/profile, C vCPU-count export, default VBoxVMI selection and MachineDebugger fallback, explicit-access-method wiring, and the e2e harness are delivered. Evidence: libmicrovmi commits df0f1c7/2c2bcb8 and LibVMI commits baeb928/3ef30fe/1a56e01/850b4ff; the live VirtualBox e2e harness passed default, fallback, explicit VBoxVMI and MachineDebugger selections.
