feat(diagnostics): log where TrueHD Atmos heights and LFE are lost - #17
Conversation
A tester on Apple TV hears TrueHD Atmos objects folded into the floor speakers and the LFE missing on AirPods, and a diagnostics report could not say which stage lost them. The session log now covers each stage: - SpatialAudioBridge logs every bed channel's RMS and peak level with CoreAudio channel names, the window's timeline position and the active and elevated object counts: after the first 5 s, every 30 s, and when the stream seeks, ends or stops (BedLevelMeter). - The engine logs the master's audio CODECS and rendition CHANNELS once per session, or that the session is media-direct. - The audio route line adds AVAudioSession.renderingMode, multichannel content support, each port's channel labels with a height count and its spatial-audio flag, and is also written on rendering-mode and spatial capability changes. - The readyToPlay track dump adds allowedAudioSpatializationFormats. - A TrueHD Atmos track loaded with object rendering off says so, and a 96 kHz Atmos track is no longer called "not Atmos". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…level reading From the cross-provider review: - The route line carried each port's portName, which for AirPods, Bluetooth and AirPlay is the user's own name for the device and for an HDMI sink can be a renamed CEC name. The line now reaches host diagnostics, and a host cannot reliably scrub a free-text name from it (a name can imitate the line's own fields), so ports are named by type. - The docs read a silent height next to elevated objects as an engine loss. The counts come from metadata and an elevated object can be silent or snap to a floor speaker, so that reading is now a lead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Align object counts with the encoded level window
When metadata changes in a decoded block that remains in pendingFrames, this call records the new active/elevated counts immediately, while the corresponding samples are not added to BedLevelMeter until encodePending. If a seek or stop occurs first, startSegment()/close() reports the prior encoded window with counts from audio that is subsequently discarded; an update at the end of a block can similarly be attributed to the chunk before it takes effect. This can produce the exact misleading combination the diagnostic is meant to investigate (elevated objects alongside silent height planes), so metadata observations should be advanced in frame order when the matching rendered planes are metered.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The mismatch is bounded by the encode chunk: metadata is observed per decoded block, and the levels are measured when pendingFrames reaches 2048 frames (43 ms at 48 kHz). So an update can be credited at most 43 ms early, and a seek or stop can credit at most one undiscarded chunk's update to the window it closes. Against 5 s and 30 s windows that report the maximum count seen, that can't produce elevated counts with silent heights over any span a reader would act on. The docs also no longer treat that combination as proof of an engine loss: a silent height next to elevated objects is described as a lead. Leaving the alignment as is.

Count Core Audio's top-front labels as heights
On routes that expose a standard 5.1.4, 7.1.4, or 9.1.6 Core Audio layout, the front height channels are labeled kAudioChannelLabel_LeftTopFront and kAudioChannelLabel_RightTopFront, not the legacy VerticalHeight labels used here. Apple's USB audio layout table confirms those labels for the predefined Atmos layouts. Because they are absent from both heightLabels and labelNames, a 7.1.4 route can be logged as heights=2 with its front heights shown as numeric unknowns; SpatialSpeaker.channelLabel also calls the matching bed channels Vhl/Vhr, preventing a reliable route-to-bed comparison. Add the top-front labels (and center variants where applicable) and map the bed's top-front speakers to them.

These are already counted. In CoreAudioBaseTypes.h (tvOS 27 SDK) kAudioChannelLabel_LeftTopFront = kAudioChannelLabel_VerticalHeightLeft, CenterTopFront = VerticalHeightCenter and RightTopFront = VerticalHeightRight: the same values, so heightLabels and labelNames cover them, and a 7.1.4 route reads heights=4 (AudioRouteDescriptionTests). The Vhl/Vhr names are the ones the header's own comment uses for kAudioChannelLayoutTag_Atmos_7_1_4 (L R C LFE Ls Rs Rls Rrs Vhl Vhr Ltr Rtr), and the bed and the route share AudioRouteDescription.labelName, so they print the same name for the same label.
…g the LFE element A diagnostics report from an Apple TV playing TrueHD Atmos resumed at 60 s showed the APAC bridge's silence check firing after 64 packets, the session going to .error while it kept playing, and every seek after it ignored. A TrueHD packet is one 40-frame access unit, and after a mid-stream start the object decoder waits for the next major sync: measured on Dolby's Unfold demo at up to 102 access units, so starts at 10, 13.7 and 20 s all reported a dead decoder. The channel bridge does not, because FFmpeg's decoder resyncs on its own. The APAC bridge now allows 1200 packets, a second of TrueHD. The same report showed the bed's LFE at -inf for minutes. The bed-level line now ends with the LFE element's input level and metadata gain, and the decoder's element layout is logged once per configuration, so a silent LFE reads as a silent source, a zero gain or a missing element. Picks up Silo-Server/AetherEngine#17's fix for TrueHD Atmos resumes: a session resumed mid-stream was reported as a dead APAC decoder after 64 packets, went to an error state while it played, and ignored every seek after it. …ed track On an Apple TV, a TrueHD pick on a file whose auto pick is E-AC-3 Atmos came back on E-AC-3. The host applied the saved TrueHD choice with selectAudioTrack, and while that rebuild was running (the APAC encoder makes it ~130 ms slower than a stream copy) the host rebuilt the session with reloadAtCurrentPosition. That reload read activeAudioTrackIndex, which the switch's own stopInternal had just cleared, loaded the auto pick and superseded the switch. The selection a reload restores now takes the newest audio intent first: a pick not yet started, then the switch in flight, then the active track, then a parked teardown snapshot. …its own task From review: - The bed-level line measured only the first LFE element; TrueHD can carry LFE2 beside it and the renderer sums both. It now sums every LFE element's input and names each one's metadata gain. - A configuration change cleared element states but kept the held object counts, so a bed-only configuration kept reporting the previous one's objects in every later window. - A cancelled audio switch returning late could clear the in-flight marker of a newer switch to the same stream; the cleanup now checks the task's own selection epoch. Report sub-threshold decoder silence at EOF
When a short VOD, or a seek into the final second of one, reaches EOF after fewer than 1200 TrueHD packets without the decoder returning a block, this threshold is never reached and flush() does not perform a final stats.decodedNothing check. The bridge consequently emits neither onDecoderProducedNothing nor .audioBridgeProducedNoOutput, leaving the session to finish with silent audio even though EOF proves that no later major sync can make the decoder recover. Keep the runtime grace period, but report an unreported decoder that produced nothing when EOF is flushed.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Leaving this as is. stats.decodedNothing is lifetime (framesDecoded == 0 since load), so the check only concerns a session whose decoder has never produced a block. On any real title a dead decoder passes 1200 packets, a second of TrueHD, almost at once and is reported. What remains is a load or resume inside the last second of a file with a dead decoder. Reporting there at EOF would move the session to .error at the very end of playback, which a host shows as a failure, in exchange for under a second of silence. A lower EOF-only threshold would bring back the false positive this PR fixes: after a mid-stream start the decoder legitimately waits up to 102 access units for a major sync, so a seek into the tail can reach EOF before it finds one.

Summary
A tester playing TrueHD Atmos on an Apple TV 4K into a Sony HT-ST5000 hears the objects come out of the floor speakers ("still audible, just not above you"), and another reports no LFE with AirPods. Their diagnostics report could not say which stage lost them. This adds the engine's half of the logging that can: what the APAC bed carries, what the playlist tells AVPlayer, and what tvOS says it does with the audio.
It also fixes a regression in #16 that this logging exposed on a real Apple TV: a TrueHD Atmos session resumed mid-stream went to an error state while it played and ignored every seek.
Stacked on #16 (the upstream 7.28.3 sync); merge that first, and merge this before releasing, because of that fix.
What changed
SpatialAudioBridgelogs each bed channel's RMS and peak level with CoreAudio channel names, the window's timeline position, and how many objects were playing and how many sat above ear level with elevation allowed. The first line comes after 5 s, then one every 30 s, plus a partial window when the stream seeks, ends or stops (BedLevelMeter). Level on a height channel means the encoder got height sound, so heights heard from the floor were lost after the engine. A silent height next to elevated objects is a lead, not proof, since an object can be silent or snap to a floor speaker.CODECSand the rendition'sCHANNELS, read back from the built master, ornot servedfor a media-direct session. Today it readschannels=none: the master declares no channel count or spatial audio for the APAC rendition, which is one of the open explanations for the tester's result.AVAudioSession.renderingMode, multichannel-content support, each port's channel labels with a height count, and the spatial-audio flag. It is also written when the rendering mode or spatial capability changes, since an HDMI sink can switch between multichannel PCM and Dolby Atmos without a route change. Ports are now named by type instead ofportName: the line reaches host diagnostics, and for AirPods, Bluetooth and AirPlay the name is the user's own name for the device.allowedAudioSpatializationFormats..errorwhile AVPlayer kept playing, and six seeks ignored. The APAC bridge now allows 1200 packets, a second of TrueHD. The channel bridge is unaffected: FFmpeg's decoder resyncs on its own.reloadAtCurrentPosition) while the switch was running, and the rebuild read the active track the switch's own teardown had just cleared. A reload now restores the newest audio intent first (a pending pick, then the switch in flight, then the active track).
