Summary

  • Pin extern/opensomeip to v0.2.0 and record that version in pyproject.toml. (Closes Update opensomeip submodule to v0.2.0 #28)
  • Adapt the pybind11 bindings to the breaking C++ API: E2E offset_bits, split TP statistics, multi-client TCP, structured try_deserialize, and the new RPC/SD methods.
  • Keep the Python wrappers aligned with the new defaults: ephemeral RPC server bind, configured remote endpoints, and SD find callbacks that receive a list of instances.

Test plan

  • Native extension builds with the system compiler
  • Native smoke check: message round-trip, UTF-8 string layout, E2E offset, TP statistics
  • pytest tests/unit tests/property tests/integration — 300 passed
  • CI lint, typecheck, and unit tests on this PR

Made with Cursor

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added RPC options for interface versions, endpoint selection, request semantics, and fire-and-forget requests.
    • Added access to event subscription state, transport sender details, connection status, and separate sender and receiver statistics.
    • Added message deserialization and transport rejection details.
  • Improvements
    • Service discovery now handles multiple results from a single discovery callback.
    • Event subscribers and RPC clients use configured remote endpoints when available.
    • Updated event subscription handling and transport protocol support.

Adapt the bindings so the extension still builds against the v0.2.0 API, including split TP statistics, E2E offset, and the RPC and SD behavior changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The submodule and configured version move to opensomeip 0.2.0. Python bindings and wrappers expose new APIs and adapt to changes in RPC, transport, TP, event, message, and service-discovery interfaces.

Changes

opensomeip v0.2.0 API update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Version, core, and discovery APIs
extern/opensomeip, pyproject.toml, src/_opensomeip/e2e_bind.cpp, src/_opensomeip/events_bind.cpp, src/_opensomeip/message_bind.cpp, src/_opensomeip/sd_bind.cpp, src/opensomeip/events.py, src/opensomeip/sd.py
The submodule reference and configured version change to 0.2.0. Bindings expose updated E2E, message, event, and SD APIs. The event subscriber uses the transport remote endpoint when available, and the SD callback processes a service instance or a sequence of instances.
RPC endpoint and method APIs
src/_opensomeip/rpc_bind.cpp, src/opensomeip/rpc.py
RPC bindings expose interface-version results, method semantics, endpoint configuration and lookup, endpoint-specific calls, and no-return requests. The Python wrappers configure native client and server endpoints.
Transport reception and peer APIs
src/_opensomeip/transport_bind.cpp, src/_opensomeip/types_bind.cpp
Transport bindings expose rejection information and callbacks, sender-aware reception, multicast error information, and TCP peer operations. The TCP accept_connection binding is removed. Result.MULTICAST_ERROR is exposed.
TP reassembly and statistics APIs
src/_opensomeip/tp_bind.cpp, src/opensomeip/tp.py, tests/unit/test_coverage_gaps.py
TP bindings expose segment metadata and reassembly keys, add key-based operations, and replace combined native statistics with sender and receiver statistics. The Python manager combines the separate snapshots, and the test checks the no-extension results.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0d407

RPC servers created through the Python wrapper now listen on a random loopback port that clients are never told about. Clients using the configured transport endpoint may fail to reach registered methods, and remote clients cannot connect. Resolve the endpoint contract before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0d407

The upgrade introduces meaningful endpoint and shutdown-contract risks. RPC handlers use an ephemeral listener that the public wrapper does not expose, and discovery batches can continue invoking application callbacks after shutdown. No introduced exploitable security vulnerability was established, but the upgraded native networking behavior could not be fully verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · inferred: The new ephemeral RPC listener is not coordinated with the public wrapper's configured transport endpoint. RpcClient now targets transport.remote_endpoint, while RpcServer constructs its native handler server at 127.0.0.1:0 without accepting a listener endpoint or exposing the resulting address. Registered handlers belong to that native server; the transport receiver provides no alternate dispatch path. This leaves endpoint ownership and application routing inconsistent. The lower-level binding exposes get_local_endpoint, but using it requires bypassing the public wrapper. Exact compatibility impact relative to the previous native release remains unresolved.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new discovery batch loop does not treat shutdown as a delivery barrier. If an application callback completes stop() while processing one instance, remaining instances still invoke that callback, although the closed receiver drops their queued messages. Application side effects can therefore continue after shutdown within an already-entered batch. Earlier receiver-replacement and late-callback weaknesses predate this PR; the additional within-batch deliveries are new. Native shutdown reentrancy and cancellation guarantees could not be verified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is application-process and network-peer scoped: configured RPC and event destinations, instantiated native transports, and discovery-driven application callbacks. The supplied evidence does not establish tenant, fleet, environment or privileged-service exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Sender-aware reception obtains the endpoint from the native transport rather than a Python-supplied identity. TP keys expose sender address, sender port and protocol/request identity fields, but their presence in bindings does not prove native peer isolation, authenticity or cancellation enforcement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Discovery shutdown suppresses writes to a closed receiver but does not suppress remaining application callbacks in an entered batch. Queue closure and callback completion therefore represent different terminal states, weakening failure containment for consumers that perform side effects in callbacks.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one managed RPC listener-address contract and explicit discovery batch cancellation semantics. Validate the upgraded native connection limits, peer attribution and reassembly cleanup before treating their exposed APIs as security guarantees.

Explanation

For active issue [#28], the summary reports the submodule pointer change and confirms opensomeip-version = "0.2.0". It also describes bindings for the v0.2.0 API changes, and the PR description reports a successful native build and 300 passing tests. However, the available evidence does not establish that new submodule commit 23ff71157c6b7a6b040884f7b17470adea60c6d6 is the v0.2.0 release. The submodule diff could not be read because the required object was unavailable.
