fix(agent_loop): grant one deliver-first turn when a no-progress guard halts - #588
When the repeat/no-progress guard trips, the run ends immediately in the Pause branch of the steering loop. The model is stopped mid-loop with its deliverable possibly unwritten, so the run terminates as Halted having produced nothing — even when it was one step from finishing.
Change
Grant the model exactly one final "deliver-first" turn when the pause was caused by a guard halt (ctx.halted_by_guard is set):
clear the guard latch (take_halted_by_guard / _cause) and resume() steering,
push a nudge instructing it to write its final output now and stop,
continue the loop for one more turn.
It is gated one-shot per run via a new ctx.deliver_first_attempted flag and on remaining_model_calls() > 0, so a model that ignores the nudge and trips the guard a second time ends the run for real — it cannot loop on the nudge. Human- and orchestrator-initiated pauses are untouched; the new path fires only on a guard-caused pause.
Three files, +45 lines, all additive:
agent_loop/run_loop.rs — the nudge constant + the guard-halt branch
context/types.rs, context/mod.rs — the one-shot deliver_first_attempted latch and its init
Validation (what I did and did not verify)
Applies cleanly on current main; every API it calls (take_halted_by_guard, remaining_model_calls, AgentEvent::ControlApplied, steering resume, SteeringOutcome::Pause) is present on main, and the hunks land at near-identical offsets — the surrounding code region is unchanged.
This exact change compiles as part of the OpenHuman build that vendors tinyagents.
I did not run cargo check/the harness test suite against this branch locally (no toolchain in that environment). Leaving the compile and tests to CI. A focused unit test for "guard halt → one deliver-first turn → second halt ends the run" is a reasonable follow-up.
When a run stalls because it repeats actions or makes no progress, it can now attempt one final response if model calls remain. If it stalls again, or no calls remain, the existing pause behavior applies.
…d halts
When the repeat/no-progress guard trips, the run ended immediately in the Pause
steering branch -- the model is stopped mid-loop with its deliverable possibly
unwritten, so the run terminates as Halted having produced nothing.
Grant exactly one final "deliver-first" turn when the pause was a guard halt
(ctx.halted_by_guard set): clear the guard latch, resume steering, push a nudge
telling the model to write its final output now, and loop once more. Gated
one-shot per run via ctx.deliver_first_attempted and on remaining model calls,
so a model that ignores the nudge and trips the guard again ends the run for
real -- it cannot loop on the nudge.
The change is additive and fires only on a guard-caused pause; human and
orchestrator pauses are unaffected.

Completeness: Complete Test assessment: No supported feature-to-test mapping was available; this does not mean tests are absent or passed.
What changed
The `SteeringOutcome::Pause` branch in `run_loop.rs` gains a guard-halt path: when `ctx.halted_by_guard` is set, `deliver_first_attempted` is false, and `remaining_model_calls() > 0`, the loop sets the one-shot flag, clears the guard latch and cause via the `take_*` helpers, calls `resume()` on the steering handle, appends a fixed `DELIVER_FIRST_NUDGE` user message, emits an `AgentEvent::ControlApplied` record, sets the last event, logs, and `continue`s for one more turn. A new `pub(crate) deliver_first_attempted: bool` field on `RunContext` carries the latch, initialized to `false` in the context constructor. Human- and orchestrator-initiated pauses keep their existing behavior; a second guard halt after the nudge ends the run for real.
Features
Added — One-shot deliver-first turn on guard halt: When a repeat/no-progress guard pauses a run, the loop now lifts the pause latch, resumes steering, injects a nudge asking the model to write its final output, and runs one more turn instead of terminating as Halted with a possibly unwritten deliverable. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/run_loop.rsimpl<State: Send + Sync, Ctx: Send + Sync> AgentHarness<State, Ctx> {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/run_loop.rsuse super::model_call::ModelCallBase;)
Added — Per-run one-shot latch and model-call budget gate: The new branch is gated on `deliver_first_attempted` and `remaining_model_calls() > 0`, so the nudge fires at most once per run and is not attempted when the model-call cap is exhausted; a second guard halt ends the run. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/context/types.rspub struct RunContext<Ctx = ()> {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/context/mod.rsimpl<Ctx> RunContext<Ctx> {)
Tests
No supported feature-to-test mapping was produced. Test execution is not inferred.

critique
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: The critique lane answered: the added field is initialized in the context constructor, the marker and latch are both cleared before `continue`, and the model-call budget check fails closed rather than spawning an extra call past the cap; no defect found in this diff.
Lane summary: The change adds a one-shot "deliver-first" nudge when a repeat/no-progress guard halts a run: it clears the guard marker, lifts the steering pause, appends a user message, and continues the loop once, guarded by a per-run flag in RunContext. The added field is initialized in the context constructor, the marker and latch are both cleared before `continue`, and the model-call budget check fails closed rather than spawning an extra call past the cap, so I found no defect in this diff. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `37934bb1b552`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
security
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: The security lane answered: the nudge text is a compile-time constant and the change introduces no new network, subprocess, path, or deserialization surface; no concrete reachable input was found on which the new branch misbehaves.
Lane summary: This change adds a one-shot "deliver-first" nudge after a repeat/no-progress guard pauses a run: it lifts the pause latch, injects a fixed user message, and loops once more, guarded by a new `deliver_first_attempted` flag on the run context. The nudge text is a compile-time constant, no new network, subprocess, path, or deserialization surface appears, and I found no concrete reachable input on which the new branch misbehaves; the change looks safe to merge. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `37934bb1b552`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

The diff changes real loop behaviour (path shape on the pause branch, latched pause is lifted, an extra model call is spent) but touches no test file, and the repository's own instruction block requires "Add or update tests with every behavior change"; several of the claims in the new comments (one-shot, second halt ends for real, not fired once the model-call cap is exhausted) are unverified by any test. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `37934bb1b552`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The description matches the diff: it names the three files, the one-shot `deliver_first_attempted` latch, the `remaining_model_calls() > 0` gate, the latch clearing via the `take_*` helpers, and the `resume()` + nudge + `continue` path, and it openly notes that no test was added and the harness suite was not run locally. I did not independently verify that `halted_by_guard` is crate-visible from `run_loop.rs` or that `ControlApplied`/`set_last_event` exist, so the compile claim is unchecked rather than disproven. One gap: the repository rule requires documenting intentionally untested edge cases in the PR description, and the description calls the unit test a "reasonable follow-up" rather than documenting the untested edge case as the rule asks. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `37934bb1b552`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
The run loop now grants one final model turn after an eligible repeat/no-progress guard halt. A context flag limits this attempt to once per run. The loop continues through its existing pause path when the attempt was already used or no model calls remain.

Summary
Track and deliver the final turn crates/tinyagents-harness/src/context/types.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/context/mod.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/run_loop.rs
The run context tracks whether the final turn was attempted and initializes the flag to false. When a repeat/no-progress guard pauses the loop, it checks the flag and remaining model-call budget. If both allow an attempt, the loop clears the guard halt and cause, resumes steering, appends the nudge, emits a deliver_first_nudge event, and continues.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 59037
The change gives a run one last chance to deliver its output after a no-progress guard halt. In a narrow case it can override a human or orchestrator pause requested at the same moment. The final turn is also not strictly limited to one model call, so it can continue further or fail at the model-call limit. Fix these before merging.

A rabbit sees the guard pause the run. One final turn begins beneath the moon. The nudge asks for the work or what blocks the way. A small event marks that attempt. The rabbit hops as the loop resumes.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Preserve the guard cause through the final turn.
If the model responds that it cannot complete the task, the loop now reports a normal completion with no failure_cause. The caller loses the classified guard reason that previously distinguished this halt from a successful answer. Retain the guard cause and expose it when the final turn does not resolve the halt. Preserve independent pause requests.
If a human or orchestrator queues a pause in the same checkpoint as the guard pause, apply_pending_steering accepts both into the same latch. This resume() clears that latch and discards the independent pause. Track the pause source and resume only when no independent pause was requested. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Enforce the final-turn limit.
The flag prevents another nudge, but it does not stop the loop after the final model call. For example, a continue_turn response can trigger further model calls without retripping the guard. If only one call remains and the model requests a file-writing tool, the next iteration instead reaches the model-call limit and can fail the run. Settle the final response and any permitted tool calls without entering another normal model turn. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
