Summarize the conversation without tool output on request - #587
ModelSummarizer can now summarize the conversation without tool output. It renders transcripts through render_message_for_summary, which puts every tool call in with its arguments and every tool result in elided form. That suits a capable chat model. It is a poor fit for a cheap single-purpose summarization model, such as a summarizer that accepts only max_tokens. There, tool payloads crowd out the conversation, and the summary ends up describing tool output instead of what was said and decided.
This PR adds:
ToolRendering, with two modes:
Full, the default, which renders as today, byte for byte.
Markers, which:
keeps user and assistant prose exactly as rendered today;
turns each tool call into one line, [used <tool>: <arguments JSON, cut to 120 chars>], with no call id;
leaves out tool results;
leaves out an assistant turn with neither prose nor calls.
render_message_for_summary_with(&Message, ToolRendering) -> Option<String>, beside render_message_for_summary, so other summarizers can reuse it.
ModelSummarizer::with_max_output_tokens(u32), which sets max_tokens on the summary request. The request carried no sampling parameters before, and still carries none by default.
API Or Behavior Changes
The items above are additive. With the defaults, existing users get the same output: a new test pins the Full transcript byte for byte.
cargo test -p tinyagents-harness --lib summarization: 211 passed.
New render_tests.rs covers: prose kept, tool results omitted, one marker per call with no id, a turn of only calls, the 120-char cut on a multi-byte boundary, and an empty turn omitted.
model_summarizer_tests.rs asserts the request carries no tool-result sentinel, no <tool_call, and max_tokens when set.
cargo test -p tinyagents-harness: everything passes except 3 tests in providers::claude_code::driver (retry::*, structured_exit::*). Those 3 fail the same way on unmodified origin/main on macOS; they spawn a fake claude script and are unrelated to this change.
Documentation
crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/README.md documents the public surface and the new invariants.

New Features
Choose how tool activity appears in generated summaries: full details remain the default, or concise markers omit tool results and shorten tool-call arguments.
Set an optional maximum output-token limit for generated summaries.
Summary prompts now include sections for user information and assistant commitments.
Documentation
Added guidance on rendering options, their behavior, and summary configuration.
Also: user facts and commitments in the checkpoint
The context-window summary prompt now asks for two more sections, ## About the User (facts the user shared about themselves) and ## Commitments (what the assistant promised or scheduled). Before this, an assistant-style conversation lost those on compaction: the prompt's sections are all about the work. Covered by the_checkpoint_keeps_facts_about_the_user_and_commitments.
Adds tests for the model summarizer's default and marker-based tool rendering, verifying that markers drop tool output and call ids while keeping the surrounding exchange, and that the configured max output tokens is forwarded on the request.

Replace the closure array with a loop over optional rendering values so the test builds each summarizer directly, making the two configurations easier to read and extend.

ModelSummarizer gains builder options to choose how tool calls and results are rendered into the summary transcript and to cap the summary's length via max_tokens. A new ToolRendering enum defaults to full rendering, with a markers mode that shortens tool arguments and omits results for small summarization models.

The model summarizer now honors the configured tool rendering mode when building its transcript, so marker mode emits compact `[used name: args]` lines for assistant tool calls and omits tool results instead of including full tool output. The summarizer request also sets max_tokens from the configured output limit, and marker arguments are truncated to 120 characters.

…ions
Added documentation for the new `render_message_for_summary_with` function, the `ToolRendering` enum with its `Full` and `Markers` modes, and the `ModelSummarizer` builder methods `with_tool_rendering` and `with_max_output_tokens`. Also noted the new `render_tests.rs` file and explained why `Markers` mode drops tool output while preserving conversation text.

Add a test asserting that an assistant turn with neither prose nor tool calls renders to nothing under marker rendering, pinning down the existing skip behaviour.

Tool call rendering now yields no content when there are neither prose
nor marker lines, instead of an empty string. This keeps empty renderings
consistent with the other branches that signal absence with None.

What changed
Summary transcript rendering gains a mode switch. `render_message_for_summary_with` returns `Option<String>`: `Full` delegates to `render_message_for_summary`; `Markers` omits tool results and empty assistant turns, emits one `[used <name>: <arguments>]` line per tool call without ids, and shortens arguments to 120 characters on a character boundary with an ellipsis. `ModelSummarizer` stores a `tool_rendering` mode and optional `max_output_tokens`, renders through `filter_map`, and sets `request.max_tokens` when configured (unset by default). The summary prompt gains `## About the User` and `## Commitments` sections. Both renderers are re-exported at the module root, and the README documents the surface and invariants.
Features
Added — ToolRendering mode enum and Markers transcript rendering: Adds a public `ToolRendering` enum, defaulting to `Full`, with a `Markers` mode that keeps system/user/assistant prose but reduces tool activity to truncated `[used <name>: ...]` markers and drops tool results. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/types.rspub struct ModelSummarizer {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/render.rspub fn render_message_for_summary(message: &Message) -> String {)
Added — ModelSummarizer::with_tool_rendering and with_max_output_tokens builders: Lets callers select the transcript rendering mode and cap summary output by sending `max_tokens` on the request; both are unset by default, preserving prior request shape. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/model_summarizer.rsimpl ModelSummarizer {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/types.rspub struct ModelSummarizer {)
Added — About the User and Commitments prompt sections: The context-window summary prompt asks for user-shared facts and assistant commitments in their own sections, so these survive compaction instead of being lost among work-oriented sections. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/model_summarizer.rsimpl ModelSummarizer {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/model_summarizer_tests.rsasync fn pending_work_is_handed_on_as_in_progress_not_stale() {)
Modified — Transcript construction routes through filter_map over mode-aware rendering: Summarizer messages are rendered by `render_message_for_summary_with` so omitted messages are skipped; defaults keep existing output unchanged. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/model_summarizer.rsimpl ModelSummarizer {)
Modified — Module root re-exports render_message_for_summary_with: Makes the mode-aware renderer available alongside the existing one to other summarizers. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/mod.rspub use pairing::{)
Modified — README documents ToolRendering, builders, and Markers invariant: Documents the added surface and states that Markers drops tool output and never the conversation while Full stays the byte-identical default. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/README.mdloop.)
Tests
unit — Pins the default request transcript byte-identical with `max_tokens` and `temperature` unset, verifies `Markers` drops the tool-result sentinel and call ids, and confirms `with_max_output_tokens` sets the request's `max_tokens`.: Test-review lane reports these behaviors pinned; no execution is confirmed by trusted check evidence. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/model_summarizer_tests.rsasync fn a_turn_prefix_request_uses_its_own_prompt() {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/summarization/model_summarizer_tests.rsuse tinyinference_llm::usage::Usage;)

Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The change adds a `ToolRendering` knob (defaulting to `Full`, so existing transcripts are byte-identical), an optional `max_tokens` cap wired straight onto `ModelRequest`, and two new prompt sections; the new tests exercise each. The rendering switch, the `Option` plumbing, and the prompt additions all check out against `render_message_for_summary_with` and `ModelRequest`, and I found no defect worth blocking on. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `13a38cd9a17e`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
security

Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: Security lane answered on its 6 reviewed files with zero findings; rendering and max_tokens present no security-relevant sink.
Lane summary: The change adds two builder options to ModelSummarizer (tool rendering mode and an output-token cap) and two prompt sections; neither introduces a security-relevant sink. Rendering is delegated to render_message_for_summary_with, which for Markers mode shortens tool arguments and drops tool results, and max_tokens is set from a caller-supplied configuration field, not untrusted input. Tests exercise the new behaviour directly; no defect found. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `13a38cd9a17e`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
tests
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: Tests lane answered with no findings; it notes one unpinned case: a Markers transcript of only system messages plus tool results renders empty, and no test pins what is then sent.
Lane summary: The new behaviour — `ToolRendering::Markers`, `render_message_for_summary_with`, `with_tool_rendering`, and `with_max_output_tokens` — is covered by new tests in `render_tests.rs` and `model_summarizer_tests.rs` that assert on the actual transcript text and request fields, so a regression would fail them. One gap remains: with `Markers`, a transcript made only of system messages plus tool results renders to an empty transcript, and no test pins what is then sent to the model. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `13a38cd9a17e`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: Description lane answered confirming code matches the description, with no reportable defects.
Lane summary: The new commits wire `ToolRendering` and `max_output_tokens` through `ModelSummarizer`, add the `## About the User` and `## Commitments` prompt sections, and test all three. The code matches the description; my only finding is that the description's claim that `Full` output is unchanged "byte for byte" is qualified by testing only the default-rendering path, which is accurate. One gap: the body lists `model_summarizer_tests.rs` coverage but the added tests for markers/max_tokens are described only in the first section, which is sufficient. No reportable defects. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `13a38cd9a17e`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
The summarization module adds configurable transcript rendering and an optional output-token limit. Marker mode omits tool results and renders tool calls as shortened markers. The default mode continues to use the existing renderer. The summary prompt adds sections for user facts and assistant commitments.

Adds builders for selecting tool rendering and setting an optional output-token limit. ModelSummarizer applies the rendering choice to transcript messages and sets max_tokens when configured. The summary prompt adds “About the User” and “Commitments” sections.
Issue 230 in tinyhumansai/chottu-core concerns tool-result prompt costs in the main turn prompt. This change omits tool results from summarizer input, so the connection is indirect.

Preserve invalid tool-call status in marker mode.
If call.invalid is set, this branch still emits [used …] and drops the invalid reason. The full renderer preserves that reason. A summary can therefore record a rejected call as completed work. Mark invalid calls as attempted or invalid, without including tool results. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep only prose when deciding whether a marker-mode assistant turn is empty.
In marker mode, render_message_for_summary_with builds the prose line from render_content. That function also renders reasoning, JSON, image, and other non-text blocks. An assistant turn that has only a reasoning block and no tool calls therefore produces a prose line. The turn is kept, although the marker contract omits assistant turns with neither prose nor calls. Filter the prose line to visible ContentBlock::Text blocks and test emptiness on that filtered list.
