fix(harness): keep provider-invalid tool arguments for admission repair - #584
ArgRecoveryMiddleware runs in before_tool, which comes before admission's relaxed-JSON repair (tinytools_agent::repair::json::recover_object). When the provider marked a call's arguments invalid, the middleware still coerced the raw string to {}. It does that whenever the tool's schema has no required fields, or when it can't find the schema. Repair then had nothing to work on, and because call.invalid was still set, admission answered the call with the bare serde error anyway.
This showed up in OpenHuman's workflow builder on deepseek-v4-flash. The model kept sending an inline workflow graph whose JSON was broken. It got back only expected ,or] at line 1 column 911, sent the same thing again, and the failure breaker stopped the run.
Changes:
arg_recovery.rs: a call with invalid set keeps its raw string, so admission can try to repair it. The fenced/JSON-encoded-string decode (step 2) still runs first.
agent_loop/tools.rs: when repair fails, the result keeps the parse detail and adds what to do next: re-send one well-formed JSON object, and build a large document in smaller steps and pass a handle instead of inlining it again. The wording stays generic because this crate doesn't know any host's tool names.
API Or Behavior Changes
Calls the provider marked invalid are no longer turned into {} by ArgRecoveryMiddleware. Arguments that relaxed JSON can fix are now repaired and the tool runs.
The tool result for unrepairable arguments now contains the corrective as well as the parse detail. The InvalidToolArgs event's error field is unchanged.
Tests
No commands were run locally; checks run on a remote CI host and on this PR's GitHub CI.
agent_loop::mod_tests::arg_recovery_middleware_leaves_provider_invalid_arguments_for_repair: an end-to-end run with the middleware installed. The repaired call runs. Before this change it was answered with the parse error.
ArgRecoveryMiddleware runs in before_tool, ahead of admission's relaxed-JSON
repair. For a call the provider marked invalid it coerced the raw string to
{} whenever the schema was permissive or unknown, so repair had nothing to fix
and the call was still answered with the bare parse error. Leave such calls
untouched.
When repair fails, answer with the parse detail plus a corrective: re-send one
well-formed JSON object, and build a large document incrementally and pass its
reference instead of inlining it again. Production traces showed a model
re-sending the same malformed inline workflow graph until the failure breaker
halted the run.

Completeness: Complete Test assessment: Test coverage is assessed from changed tests and lane evidence; execution is not claimed without trusted check data.
What changed
Provider-marked-invalid tool calls now retain their raw argument string past `ArgRecoveryMiddleware` instead of being coerced to `{}`, so admission's relaxed-JSON repair runs on the original input and repairable calls execute. The fenced/JSON-encoded-string decode step still runs first and now clears the `invalid` marker on success, preventing a stale parse error from being answered for a decoded-valid call. When repair fails, the tool result includes a corrective alongside the parse detail. The middleware recovery-order doc comment is renumbered to five steps. The change is confined to tool-call admission/recovery; the `InvalidToolArgs` event shape is unchanged.
Features
Added — Actionable corrective for unrepairable tool-call arguments: When relaxed-JSON repair fails, the tool result carries guidance to re-send schema-matching JSON and to build large documents incrementally via a handle, giving the model something actionable instead of a bare serde error. Tests
unit — Asserts that after `before_tool`, a provider-invalid tool call retains its raw argument string and still has `invalid` set.: Tests lane states this pins preservation of the raw string and invalid marker; no trusted check evidence confirms execution or results. unit — Asserts that a provider-invalid fenced JSON object is decoded to an object and its invalid mark is cleared by the middleware.: Tests lane states this pins the decode-and-clear behavior; no trusted check evidence confirms execution or results. Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: Tests lane answered with 0 findings, stating the middleware unit tests and the harness-level test guard the skip behavior and the unrepairable-path corrective, and that it found no unguarded behavioural gap.
Lane summary: The change is covered by three new tests: the middleware unit tests pin that a provider-invalid call's raw string is preserved and that a fenced, decodable object is cleared, and the harness-level test pins that the middleware no longer destroys the input that admission's relaxed-JSON repair needs (it asserts the tool actually ran with the repaired arguments, so it fails if the skip at step (3) regresses). The unrepairable path now has its own test asserting the new corrective text reaches the transcript. I found no behavioural gap the tests leave unguarded. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `3552e60ed887`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The description matches the diff: step 3 in `ArgRecoveryMiddleware` now leaves provider-invalid raw arguments for admission repair, the fenced/JSON-string decode clears the stale `invalid` mark, unrepairable arguments are answered with a corrective message instead of the bare parse error, and the three named tests are present. Both behaviour changes and the test list are stated accurately. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `3552e60ed887`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Walkthrough
Provider-invalid tool arguments now remain available for relaxed-JSON repair. When arguments cannot be parsed, the tool result includes the parse detail and instructions for submitting schema-valid JSON.

Preserve invalid arguments for repair crates/tinyagents-harness/src/middleware/library/arg_recovery.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/middleware/library/arg_recovery_tests.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/mod_tests.rs
ArgRecoveryMiddleware::before_tool preserves provider-invalid arguments for admission repair. When it decodes a fenced JSON object, it clears the invalid mark. Tests cover both cases and successful relaxed-JSON repair.
Return corrective errors for unparseable arguments crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/tools.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/mod_tests.rs
The error includes the tool name and parse detail, requests schema-valid JSON, and advises using smaller calls with a reference for large documents. A test checks that the tool does not run and that the transcript includes the parse detail and corrective message.

A provider marks a markdown-fenced JSON object invalid. ArgRecoveryMiddleware
decoded it to an object but left the mark, so admission answered the now-valid
call with the stale parse error. Clear it on a successful decode.
Word the unparseable-arguments corrective against the tool's argument schema
rather than demanding an object, since string- and array-valued schemas are
supported, and apply rustfmt to the new test.
