Summary

Model observations now report who served a call, the provider's id for the response, and the time to first token. A host exporting calls to a tracing backend can then see when a routing gateway spreads one conversation across several upstream providers, and can look a call up with the provider afterwards.

  • TurnObservation::Model and TurnObservation::ModelDispatch gain served_by, response_id and first_token_ms. PhysicalDispatchOutcome gains served_by, response_id and first_output.
  • observability::response_facts (crate-private) reads them provider-neutrally:
    • served_by comes from a top-level provider string on raw.
    • response_id comes from AssistantMessage::id, falling back to raw.id.
    • is_output decides what counts as output: text, reasoning or a tool-call fragment.
  • Time to first token:
    • Logical call (Model): the agent loop records the first output of each streaming attempt on RunContext::call_first_output_at, cleared when the innermost model call begins (the same pattern as call_streamed). The observer middleware measures it from its own start. A value older than that start belongs to an earlier call and is ignored.
    • Physical dispatch: ObservedChatModel notes the first output item on the PhysicalDispatchGuard. A cancelled dispatch keeps it.
  • Streamed responses, checked against the real OpenAI-compatible SSE parser in tinyinference:
    • provider survives in a streamed response's raw, because it is outside CHUNK_KEYS.
    • The chunk id is dropped from raw, but it is kept on AssistantMessage::id, which is why response_id reads the message first.
    • No tinyinference change is needed.
  • Reasoning tokens were already on ObservedUsage. The new e2e test pins them for a streamed OpenRouter-shaped usage chunk.
  • OTLP export (otlp_requests) now splits gen_ai.usage.reasoning_tokens out of output into Langfuse's output_reasoning_tokens usage bucket. Before, reasoning was not exported at all, because gen_ai.usage.* keys are skipped from metadata. Langfuse stores flat usage_details unchanged, so the buckets must not overlap, the same rule as cache reads already taken out of input. total is unchanged. The trace_export README documents the mapping. (The batch-ingestion exporter's reasoning_output_tokens key is left as is.)

Closes #581

API Or Behavior Changes

Breaking for code that constructs these values: the TurnObservation::Model and ModelDispatch variants and the PhysicalDispatchOutcome struct have new fields. Patterns that match with .. are unaffected. New PhysicalDispatchGuard::note_output. There is a CHANGELOG entry.

Tests

  • New crates/tinyagents-integration-tests/tests/e2e_observed_model_call_facts.rs. It streams an OpenRouter-shaped SSE response (provider: "Wafer", id: "gen-…", reasoning then text, a usage chunk with reasoning_tokens) from a loopback server, through OpenAiModel, the agent loop and both observers. A control stream without provider or id reports neither. It failed to compile before the change because the fields did not exist.
  • otlp_tests.rs::reasoning_tokens_are_their_own_usage_bucket failed before the exporter change and passes after it.
  • Unit tests in response_facts_tests.rs, physical_dispatch_tests.rs and turn_observer_tests.rs. They cover first-output timing, streams with no output, cancellation keeping the time, and a stale first-output time from an earlier call.

Commands run locally (macOS):

  • cargo fmt --check: clean
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo build --workspace --all-targets: ok
  • cargo build --workspace --all-targets --all-features: ok
  • cargo test --workspace --all-features --no-fail-fast: every test passes except 3 in providers::claude_code::driver::tests (retry::missing_resumed_session_clears_mapping_and_retries_as_new, retry::unrelated_failure_keeps_mapping_and_does_not_retry, structured_exit::nonzero_exit_with_structured_missing_session_error_retries). They fail with exit 126 … /var/folders/…/T/.tmpXXXX/claude: Operation not permitted: this machine refuses to execute the fake claude script those tests write to the system temp dir. This PR does not touch that code. Expect them to pass in CI.

Documentation

  • docs/modules/harness/observability.md has a new section, "Who served a call, and when its first token arrived".
  • CHANGELOG.md has an Unreleased entry.

Known gap, not changed here: a streamed response's raw also drops the chunk's model, so answered_model on a streamed call is None for ModelDispatch, and for Model it falls back to resolved_model.

Introduce a response facts module that records structured details about model responses during harness runs, giving observability into what the agent actually received.

The helper now reads as a plain predicate over stream items rather than implying it only matters for the first output, so the name and its doc reference were updated to match.

Physical dispatch outcomes now carry the upstream provider and response id
reported by routing gateways, plus the time from invocation start to the

The agent loop now stamps the instant a model call first streams output, using the shared response-facts check instead of an inline match, and clears it when the innermost call begins so retries report the attempt that actually produced the result. Turn observations now carry the upstream provider that served a call, the
provider's response id, and the time to first streamed output, so calls can be
looked up with the provider and latency broken down. First-token timing is
guarded against timestamps left over from an earlier call when a middleware
answers without reaching the model.

Adds tests asserting that a model observation reports the serving provider and response id, and that first-token time never exceeds the call duration. Also verifies a stale first-output timestamp from an earlier call is not attributed to a call that never streams.

…el observations

`TurnObservation::Model`, `TurnObservation::ModelDispatch` and `PhysicalDispatchOutcome` now carry `served_by`, `response_id` and `first_token_ms`/`first_output`, so callers can see which upstream provider served a call and how long the first streamed output took. The new fields are breaking for code that constructs these values, and the changelog and observability docs describe their sources and `None` cases.

Diagnostics and supporting details

Full summary

Pull request purpose (title): Report serving provider, response id and time to first token on model observations. Model observations now report who served a call, the provider's response id, and the time to first token, on both the logical `TurnObservation::Model` and physical `TurnObservation::ModelDispatch` events (and on `PhysicalDispatchOutcome`). This is breaking for code that constructs those values but transparent to patterns that match with `..`. OTLP export additionally splits generation reasoning tokens out of `output` into Langfuse's `output_reasoning_tokens` bucket, with `total` unchanged.

What changed

Adds a crate-private `observability::response_facts` module with `served_by`, `response_id` and `is_output` helpers. Extends `TurnObservation::Model`, `TurnObservation::ModelDispatch` and `PhysicalDispatchOutcome` with `served_by`, `response_id` and `first_token_ms`/`first_output`. The agent loop records the per-attempt first output on a new crate-private `RunContext::call_first_output_at`, cleared when the innermost model call begins; the observer middleware measures it from its own start and ignores a value older than that start. `ObservedChatModel` notes the first output on `PhysicalDispatchGuard` via a new `note_output`, and a cancelled dispatch keeps it. Separately, OTLP `usage_details` now moves reasoning tokens out of `output` into `output_reasoning_tokens`, with cache reads kept out of `input` and `total` unchanged.

Features

  • Added — Provider-neutral response facts helper: Centralizes reading the serving provider, response id and output classification from one response or stream item, without touching content; reused by both the logical and physical observation paths. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/response_facts.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/mod.rs mod journal_entry;)
  • Modified — Output detection shared with idle-timeout logic: The agent loop's raw-delta output test now uses the shared `is_output` helper instead of an inline match, keeping first-token detection and existing streaming behavior consistent. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/agent_loop/model_call.rs impl<State: Send + Sync, Ctx: Send + Sync> AgentHarness<State, Ctx> {)
  • Modified — Reasoning tokens as their own OTLP usage bucket: OTLP export now moves `gen_ai.usage.reasoning_tokens` out of `output` into Langfuse's `output_reasoning_tokens`, mirroring how cache reads are kept out of `input`, so Langfuse receives non-overlapping flat usage buckets; `total` is unchanged. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/trace_export/otlp.rs fn usage_details(span: &TraceSpan) -> Option<Value> {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/trace_export/README.md Product identity stays out of the crate: the host passes an `ExportBrand`)
  • Modified — Documentation and CHANGELOG for new observation fields: Documents the three new facts, their sources and when they are `None`, records the breaking field additions for constructors, and notes the OTLP usage-bucket split. (docs/modules/harness/observability.md Event kinds should include:, CHANGELOG.md during the 2.x migration are no longer part of the TinyAgents workspace.)

Tests

  • unit — Covers a streamed dispatch reporting `served_by` and `response_id` with a first-output time bounded by duration, a stream without output reporting no first output and no server/id, and a cancelled dispatch keeping its first-output time and not double-emitting a cancelled terminal.: Directly pins the physical-dispatch timing and cancellation behavior. The tests lane answered and reported no findings. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/physical_dispatch_tests.rs fn finishing_a_dispatch_does_not_emit_a_second_cancelled_terminal_on_drop() {)
  • unit — Asserts that a generation's usage details split reasoning tokens into `output_reasoning_tokens` and subtract them from `output` while `total` stays input plus output.: Pins the OTLP usage-bucket arithmetic. The tests lane answered and reported no findings. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/observability/trace_export/otlp_tests.rs fn otlp_has_one_root_with_readable_io_and_call_only_usage() {)
  • fixture update — Updates an explicit dispatch terminal construction to supply the new served_by, response_id and first_token_ms fields.: Mechanical adaptation to the new required fields; no lane reported issues. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/cost/model_budget_tests.rs impl crate::observability::PhysicalDispatchTerminal for ExplicitDispatchTerminal)

Every new branch — the two `response_facts` readers, the first-output clock (`ctx.call_first_output_at`, `PhysicalDispatchGuard::note_output`), the stale-timestamp guard, and the reasoning/`total` arithmetic — is pinned by a test that fails on regression, including an end-to-end stream test through the real OpenAI-compatible provider; I found no code that misbehaves on a reachable input. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `096107fb2cbb`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Walkthrough

Model observations and physical dispatch outcomes now include serving-provider and response-ID metadata, plus time to first streamed output. OTLP generation usage now reports reasoning tokens in a separate bucket while retaining the total token count.

Changes: Model observation facts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture response facts and output time

Explanation

Issue #581 requires served_by, response_id, and first_token_ms on logical model observations and physical dispatch outcomes. The changes add these fields, extract provider and response identifiers with the required fallbacks, and record first streamed text, reasoning, or tool-call output. Tests cover buffered calls, no-output streams, cancellation, stale timestamps, and an OpenRouter-shaped end-to-end stream. Documentation covers the new behavior.

Reasoning tokens are now subtracted from the output count and exported as
output_reasoning_tokens so the Langfuse usage details stay non-overlapping,
matching how cache reads are already taken out of input.

Clear the timestamp at the start of each streaming attempt.

If an attempt emits output and fails, a retry that completes without output leaves the earlier attempt’s ctx.call_first_output_at intact. saw_first_output resets, but the context timestamp does not. The logical Model observation then reports a first-token time for an attempt that produced no output. Clear the context timestamp when each attempt starts, before reading its stream.

At the start of each streaming attempt, reset `ctx.call_first_output_at`
alongside `saw_first_output` before reading the stream. This prevents a retry
with no output from retaining the prior attempt’s first-output timestamp.

Apply the raw ID fallback after rejecting an empty message ID.

If response.message.id is Some("") and response.raw.id is valid, or_else selects the empty ID. The later filter then returns None. Filter message.id before or_else so the observation retains the available response ID.

Update the response ID selection in the response facts logic to reject an empty

Count block output when recording first-output time.

If a provider emits text, thinking, or tool arguments through BlockDelta or BlockEnd without a compatibility MessageDelta, is_output stays false. Both the agent loop and physical dispatch use this helper, so both observations report no first-output time for that stream. The agent loop already recognizes nonempty block events as output in its stream watchdog. Apply the corresponding output classification here.

Update `is_output` to recognize `BlockDelta` and `BlockEnd` events containing
nonempty text, reasoning, or tool arguments as output, matching the agent loop’s
stream-watchdog classification. Preserve the existing classifications for other
`ModelStreamItem` variants.

Clarify that Langfuse usage details are flat and non-overlapping, with reasoning tokens split out of output into output_reasoning_tokens while total stays unchanged. Also note how first-token timing and other attributes map onto Langfuse observation fields.

Describe how total is calculated.

The documented input and output buckets exclude cached and reasoning tokens. They sum to 53 in the new test, while total is 120. State that total uses the original gen_ai.usage.input_tokens and gen_ai.usage.output_tokens counts.
