Depends on #166 (fix/python-ci-lint-debt).

examples/python has never been CI'd because python-precommit.yml filters on examples/Python/** (capital P) — GitHub Actions path filters are case-sensitive. The directory on disk is examples/python. The lint step also targeted application_examples examples, neither of which exists.

Changes:

  • paths filter: examples/Python/** → examples/python/**
  • 5× working-directory: ./examples/Python → ./examples/python
  • pylint target: application_examples examples → .

.venv probe finding (Step 5): CI creates .venv in-repo via virtualenvs-in-project: true before pylint runs. With .pylintrc ignore-paths= empty, pylint traverses .venv site-packages and fails (exit 6, 2,199 errors from pip/_vendor, score drops 10.00→9.07). This is a CI-correctness concern, not pre-existing debt, so it belongs here.

Fix: .pylintrc ignore-paths= → ^[.]venv,^[.]git. Note: the plan's suggested ^\.venv pattern is mangled by pylint 3.3.9's regexp_paths_csv transformer (it pipes patterns through PureWindowsPath, which treats \ as a path separator, turning ^\.venv into ^\\.venv — a literal backslash that never matches). Using ^[.] (character-class equivalent of \.) survives the transformation. Verified: pylint exits 0 with a throwaway .venv present (score 10.00/10).

Result: Enabling the workflow surfaces nothing new precisely because PR #166 already cleared the debt.

examples/python is not covered by CI. .github/workflows/python-precommit.yml

filters on examples/Python/** (capital P) but the directory is examples/python, and GitHub Actions path filters are case-sensitive, so the workflow has never run. The lint step also targeted application_examples examples, neither of which exists here.

A follow-up PR fixes the workflow paths. This PR clears the pre-existing debt it will surface so that PR can turn CI on green. Split deliberately: the debt here is unrelated to the path bug, and this change is mechanical and independently reviewable.

7 files touched:

- news-aggregator/main.py: E1205 x2 resolved to f-strings (logging-format-style=new per .pylintrc:396), black reformatted trailing whitespace/indentation at lines 51-53

- news-aggregator/main_sync.py: E1205 x2 resolved to f-strings

- collect_paginated_ecommerce_listing_data/main.py: W1514 + W1309 on open(); black slice spacing

- collect_paginated_news_headlines/main.py: W1514 on open()

- compare_product_prices/async_main.py: black formatting (tuple unpacking, print collapse)

- humanlike-antibot/main.py: isort import grouping

- maps_scraper/main.py: isort import grouping

Note: news-aggregator/main.py:45-47 and compare_product_prices/async_main.py:47-49 contain the same broken async with await browser.new_context() pattern as .templates/python/template_async.py:21-23. This PR reformats those lines without fixing the bug; that is left as a separate contribution.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pre-commit workflow now uses examples/python for its path filter and Python checks. Pylint scans the working directory, and its configuration excludes .venv and .git. Python examples include import and formatting changes, explicit UTF-8 encoding for two output files, and f-string logging updates.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 5561a

The pre-commit workflow now targets the correct lowercase path, and the earlier workflow-validity concern no longer applies. The example edits keep their behavior, and no merge-blocking risks are known.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d619a

The change restores intended Python checks without adding a new credential mechanism. No vulnerability is confirmed, but effective workflow token permissions are unknown, leaving uncertainty about the authority available during newly enabled runs.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established execution surface is the Python CI runner and repository checkout. Any downstream repository mutation would depend on executable attacker-controlled content and effective token authority; write access and broader exposure have not been established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The token-permission candidate remains unresolved rather than verified. Newly reachable dependency installation is supported, but repository or organization defaults and resulting pull-request token permissions are unavailable, preventing confirmation of a privileged attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workflow retains its existing pull-request execution model and introduces no explicit token, secret reference, push command, or deployment step. Its authority remains externally policy-dependent rather than explicitly bounded in this workflow.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Declare the minimum token permissions required by the validation actions and disable persisted checkout credentials if they are unnecessary. This would make the authority boundary explicit; it is a hardening proposal, not evidence of an existing exploit.
