[BUG] MSI Katana 15 HX C14WFK — Internal speakers unavailable with RT712 VB + RT1320 SoundWire codecs

System information

  • Laptop: MSI Katana 15 HX C14WFK
  • Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
  • Motherboard: MS-15T3, REV:1.0
  • BIOS: E15T3IMS.101
  • Distribution: Gentoo Linux (OpenRC, KDE Plasma)
  • Kernel: 6.18.57-gentoo-dist-bin
  • Audio controller: Intel Raptor Lake HD Audio [8086:7a50]
  • Audio stack: ALSA, PipeWire, WirePlumber

Problem

The internal speakers are unavailable under Linux. ALSA does not expose an analog speaker playback device, and PipeWire displays only Dummy Output.

The Intel SOF firmware loads successfully, and both Realtek SoundWire codecs are detected and bound to their respective drivers.

However, the kernel reports:

sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3:
No SoundWire machine driver found for the ACPI-reported configuration

SoundWire devices

Link 0 — Realtek RT712 VB

sdw:0:0:025d:0713:01
MODALIAS=sdw:m025Dp0713v03c01
DRIVER=rt712-sdca

Link 1 — Realtek RT1320

sdw:0:1:025d:1320:01
MODALIAS=sdw:m025Dp1320v03c01
DRIVER=rt1320-sdca

SOF firmware

The system currently loads IPC3 firmware:

Firmware file: intel/sof/sof-rpl-s.ri
Topology file: intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-idisp.tplg
Firmware version: 2.2.0-57864
Firmware ABI: 3:22:1
Kernel ABI: 3:23:1

Kernel source investigation

The Raptor Lake SoundWire machine table is defined in:

sound/soc/intel/common/soc-acpi-intel-rpl-match.c

The existing entries do not appear to describe the RT712 VB codec on SoundWire link 0 together with the RT1320 amplifier on link 1.

Other Intel platform matching tables contain definitions for these codecs, but no suitable Raptor Lake topology for this exact configuration was identified in the installed firmware package.

Additional kernel messages

rt712_sdca_io_init RT712 VB detected but no SMART_MIC function exposed in ACPI

Loading firmware: realtek/rt1320/rt1320-patch-code-vc.bin

rt1320_pde_transition_delay PDE to PS3 is NOT ready

Expected behavior

The kernel should recognize the SoundWire audio configuration and expose the internal speakers as an ALSA playback device.

Actual behavior

The system falls back to the generic HDA machine driver, and no internal-speaker playback device is available.

Questions

  1. Does this RT712 VB + RT1320 configuration require a new Raptor Lake SoundWire machine-description entry?
  2. Is there an existing or planned SOF topology compatible with this hardware?
  3. Are any additional kernel or firmware changes required to enable the internal speakers?

I would be happy to test patches and provide additional diagnostic logs.

BTW:

Related upstream work

I found the following related reports and patch:

My hardware uses the same Realtek device IDs (0x0713 and 0x1320), but differs from these reports because it has an Intel Raptor Lake controller, RT712 VB on SoundWire link 0, and a single RT1320 on link 1.

Could the maintainers advise whether the approach in PR #5935 can be adapted to the Raptor Lake matching table, and whether a compatible IPC3 topology is available or needs to be developed?

I am willing to test experimental kernel patches and firmware changes on Gentoo Linux.

    @mbzadegan Can you test #6027 and share the dmesg log?
