Hi, I'm Anthony Bartman 👋

Software developer focused on reverse engineering and audio/video tools. I have brought vintage speech synthesizers back to life by de-compiling their original binaries into portable C, and I build creative tools for working with sound and video.

💼 Open to work. The best way to reach me is by email.

🛠️ Skills

  • Languages: C, C++, Python, Rust
  • Reverse engineering: decompiling legacy binaries and firmware into buildable, maintainable C
  • Audio & DSP: speech synthesis, real-time audio recording, video synthesis
  • Platforms: cross-platform builds for Windows and Linux, including shared libraries for use by other programs
  • AI-assisted development: using Claude Code to speed up reverse engineering and tooling work

🎛️ Featured projects

klattEDIT
A Klatt parameter editor for the modern age.

rasterwarp
A video synthesizer heavily inspired by Scanimate.

spool
A versatile sound recorder and logger that uses a ring buffer to heavily reduce dropouts. Saves to BWF wave files and Opus.

drummer
A drum pattern player inspired by the Boss DR-550 drum machine and 260 Drum Machine Patterns by René-Pierre Bardet.

Ensoniq Mirage Reborn
A faithful emulation of the Ensoniq Mirage sampler keyboard from the 80s. Works with Mirage disk images including the special Triton Soundprocess disk (an OS created by the late Mark Cecys of MacinTalk and VocalWriter fame).

Limewave
A sample/loop editor that can edit WAV files, and save to an SFZ instrument from a folder containing WAV files.

🗣️ Old Text-To-Speech Preservation Projects

These synthesizers powered accessibility devices and telephone systems in the 1980s and 90s, and their source code was never publicly available. I recovered each one by decompiling the original software or firmware into C that builds on modern systems.

Speech Plus Prose 2000
Versions 1.1 and 3.4.1, decompiled to C and buildable as a shared library on Windows and Linux. The CallText 5010, a variant of the Prose, was Stephen Hawking's voice. Its firmware has yet to be found.

DECtalk DTC-01
DEC's 1984 DECtalk DTC-01, decompiled to C and built as a shared library for use by other programs. Also usable as a Windows voice through SAPI 5.

First Byte ProVoice
The ProVoice engine behind First Byte's Monologue and Smooth Talker.

Telia Promotor Infovox 230
A decompilation of the Infovox 230 speech synthesizer.

Centigram TruVoice
A decompilation of Centigram's TruVoice synthesizer with a command-line program to drive it. TruVoice succeeded the Prose 2000 after Centigram acquired Speech Plus in the early 90s.

Dolphin Apollo II
A decompilation of the Dolphin Apollo II hardware speech synthesizer, the predecessor to Dolphin's software-based Orpheus synthesizer.

MITalk-79
A faithful reconstruction of the MITalk text to speech system by Dennis Klatt. This system lays the foundation for what would become the later DECTalk DTC-01.

Witten79
Reconstruction of Ian Witten's 1979 PAT synthesizer code cited from his research paper.
