feat(dequant): packed dequant for Q4_0/Q4_1/Q4_K/Q3_K/Q2_K (#125) - #134
Golden expected values come from a Python port of the ggml scalar loops (same method as the existing Q8_0/Q5_K/Q6_K vectors), not from running llama.cpp.
The real-file OLMoE Q4_K_M smoke run (acceptance item 2) has not been run yet; no local GGUF was available.
Not in this PR: the cortex-tensor token-row allowlist follow-up (after next release).
Verification
cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings (default, all-features, and 1.97.1), cargo test --all-features --locked, and cargo doc with -D warnings all pass locally.
Adds packed dequantization for Q4_0, Q4_1, Q2_K, Q3_K, and Q4_K, wiring the new decoders into dequantize_packed and packed_row_size (Q4_0 32/18 B, Q4_1 32/20 B, Q2_K 256/84 B, Q3_K 256/110 B, Q4_K 256/144 B). Width-divisibility and row-length checks still fail closed, and the helpers are re-exported from the gguf module and crate root. README, CHANGELOG, and crate docs now list the new formats.
Testing
Bit-exact golden vectors generated by generate_golden.py (a Python port of the ggml scalar loops, not llama.cpp); existing fixtures regenerate byte-identical, and the new Q4/Q2/Q3 vectors are documented as not yet compared against a llama.cpp build.
Hand-derived unit tests cover nibble/bit order, scale packing, and Q3_K hmask.
Opt-in real_gguf_token_rows_dequant_finite smoke test decodes token rows from a local GGUF and fails if no rows decode.
The cortex-tensor token-row allowlist follow-up is intentionally out of scope.
Written for commit b80fb37. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added packed dequantization support for Q4_0, Q4_1, Q2_K, Q3_K, and Q4_K, with public access to the corresponding helpers.
Packed decoding validates format-specific width alignment and expected row lengths.
Documentation
Updated the README and changelog to list the supported formats.
Tests
Added golden-vector coverage for the new formats and an opt-in check that decodes rows from local GGUF files and verifies the decoded values are finite. Golden vectors for these formats have not yet been compared with llama.cpp output.
CodeAnt-AI Description
Decode additional GGUF quantized tensor formats
What Changed
Decode Q4_0, Q4_1, Q2_K, Q3_K, and Q4_K packed weights into f32 values
Use the new formats through the shared packed decoder and row-size lookup
Reject rows with unsupported widths or incorrect packed lengths
Impact
✅ Decode five additional GGUF quantization formats ✅ Read packed tensor rows as f32 ✅ Catch malformed packed rows

Walkthrough
The crate adds packed-row sizing and dequantization for Q4_0, Q4_1, Q2_K, Q3_K, and Q4_K. It exports the new decoder functions and adds golden-vector tests and an ignored real-GGUF token-row test.

Summary
Packed sizing and decoding src/gguf/dequant.rs
packed_row_size and dequantize_packed now handle five additional formats. The row decoders unpack quantized values and apply packed scales and offsets. They validate width alignment and packed row length.
Public API and format documentation src/gguf/mod.rs, src/lib.rs, README.md, CHANGELOG.md, Cargo.toml, src/gguf/tensor.rs
The GGUF module and crate root re-export the new decoder functions. The README, changelog, package description, and module documentation list the added formats.
Golden-vector generation and tests cover all five formats. An ignored pilot test decodes up to eight supported token_embd.weight rows and checks output length and finite values.

Validate the five new golden vectors against actual llama.cpp output.
generate_golden.py computes each expected fixture with its local Python decoder at lines 269 and 137–221. The checked-in fixtures contain no independent llama.cpp output or recorded comparison. The test comment claims external conformance, but the test only compares Rust output with those generated files. This leaves the issue’s explicit independent-reference requirement unmet without implying a decoder bug.
Run the five vectors through the applicable ggml/llama.cpp revision, compare the f32 bits, and record the reference revision and procedure with the fixtures or test documentation.

Agreed, and not done yet: I have no llama.cpp build here, so the five new vectors are still cross-implementation checks, not external-reference output. I corrected the golden_dequant.rs header and the generator comment to say exactly that (the 'conformance' wording now covers only Q8_0/Q5_K/Q6_K) (f02327f). Leaving this thread open until the b4800 comparison is run and recorded. 🤖 Addressed by Claude Code
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@rmems Understood. The corrected wording distinguishes cross-implementation checks from external-reference validation.
This finding remains open. The remaining check is to compare the five new vectors’ f32 bits against actual llama.cpp b4800 output and record the reference revision, procedure, and results. The missing comparison does not establish a decoder bug.
require_pilots() only requires existing GGUF files. The test skips files without token_embd.weight and files with unsupported dtypes. A configured F32/F16-only input set can therefore pass without calling dequantize_packed. This does not enforce the OLMoE Q4_K_M smoke-test criterion.
Track successful packed decodes and fail when the count is zero. Use an explicit OLMoE Q4_K_M input when validating that acceptance criterion.

Add an independent ggml or llama.cpp comparison for the five new formats.
The five new golden tests compare public decoder output only with expected bytes generated by the in-repository Python ports. The generator states that these vectors have not been compared with a llama.cpp build. Issue #125 requires golden vectors checked against ggml or llama.cpp reference output. Without that comparison, shared errors between the Python ports and Rust decoders can remain undetected.
Add reference-generated expected outputs and record the reference revision at this test boundary. Keep the Python vectors as separate cross-implementation checks.

The public dequantize_packed dispatch now supports Q4_0, Q4_1, Q2_K, Q3_K, and Q4_K, but the introductory summary still omits them. Readers who rely on this summary can incorrectly conclude that these formats are unsupported. The correction is limited to updating this list; the later README sections already contain the complete list.

Validate the five new fixtures against llama.cpp output.
Issue #125 requires golden vectors checked against ggml/llama.cpp reference output. The five new tests currently compare Rust decoders only with expected files generated by the Python ports. If those ports and a Rust decoder share a layout error, such as Q4 nibble ordering or packed scale extraction, the tests can pass while the decoder disagrees with llama.cpp. Generate the five expected files with a pinned llama.cpp/ggml reference for the same packed inputs, then record that provenance and commit the reference-checked outputs.
