21st.dev marked seven of these buttons "Needs changes" against its quality guidelines. They were hard-coded dark, and their listings showed a small button on a black stage even on 21st's light page.

  • Theme: Cooldown, Doubt, Command, Reveal, Demonic and Troll get variant: "auto" | "dark" | "light", defaulting to auto. Light mode uses the house light face built on theme tokens; dark mode is unchanged. Evil Eye stays obsidian, with a warmer drop shadow on light pages. This changes how these buttons look in light mode on evilbuttons.com.
  • Start states for covers: initialCooldown, initialStep, defaultRevealed, idleCharge and initialOffset, so each button can open mid-trick.
  • Fixes: Command's keycaps scale with the button's text. Doubt's width reservation now counts children. Demonic shows a still flame under reduced motion and scales with height.
  • 21st/: one standalone demo per button for 21st.dev. Each puts the button in a small realistic scene, and tsconfig excludes the folder.

Typecheck, lint and registry:test pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added light, dark, and automatic theme variants across the button collection, with automatic styling that follows the page theme.
    • Added options to start cooldowns, confirmation sequences, and secret reveals in configurable states, and to set starting positions for moving buttons.
    • Added interactive demos for the buttons, including a save-and-preview flow and an email-code cooldown mockup.
  • Documentation
    • Updated button guides with the new appearance and starting-state options, plus reduced-motion behavior.

They import their component by relative path, the way 21st.dev bundles them.
variant (auto by default) gives it the light graded face in light mode and the
same graphite face as before in dark. initialCooldown starts it mid-lock, for
resend-code buttons or a stored rate limit. Under reduced motion the sweep now
steps with the countdown instead of staying full.
A check-your-email code card whose Resend code button starts locked, so the
cover shows the sweep and the taunt.
variant (auto by default) adds a light face and keeps the dark one as before.
initialStep opens it a few prompts deep. The width it reserves for the widest
label now counts children too.
A danger-zone card for deleting a workspace, opening two doubts deep.
variant (auto by default) adds a light face and keeps the dark one as before.
The keycaps now size from the button's text, so a larger text class scales
them; at the default 14px they're unchanged.
An editor header with a large Save button and its shortcut caps.
variant gains auto, now the default, which picks the light or dark face from
the theme. defaultRevealed starts it showing the secret.
An API keys card with the production key revealed and the development key
masked.
variant (auto by default) adds a light face and keeps the dark one as before.
On light pages the fire burns gold to red into soot, since a white-hot core
vanished on white. idleCharge lets the horns peek and embers smolder before
the first press, horns and flames scale with the button's height, and reduced
motion now shows a still flame instead of none.
A bare hero with a large Sell your soul call to action, resting at 0.6 charge
so the cover already shows the horns and fire.
variant (auto by default) adds a light face and keeps the dark one as before.
initialOffset starts it out of its slot, leaning, until its first move.
A Delete account? card whose confirm button starts tipped off the corner and
runs around the card when chased.
The pill stays obsidian in both themes, since the eye is light added onto a
dark face. On light pages the drop softens and warms toward the eye color;
dark keeps its deep black drop.
One large pill centered with room around it for the eye to track.

📝 Walkthrough

Seven button components add theme-aware variants or configurable starting behavior. The pull request also adds component demos, updates registry content and documentation, changes the RevealButton preview, and excludes the demo directory from TypeScript compilation.

Changes: Button surface variants

Layer / File(s) Summary
Theme-aware button surfaces
components/evil-buttons/command-button.tsx, components/evil-buttons/cooldown-button.tsx, components/evil-buttons/doubt-button.tsx, components/evil-buttons/evil-eye-button.tsx, components/evil-buttons/reveal-button.tsx, components/evil-buttons/troll-button.tsx, components/evil-buttons/demonic-button.tsx, components/landing/previews/interaction.tsx, public/r/command-button.json, public/r/evil-eye-button.json, content/docs/command-button.mdx, content/docs/evil-eye-button.mdx, 21st/command-button.demo.tsx, 21st/evil-eye-button.demo.tsx, tsconfig.json
The components add or update automatic, dark, and light surface styles. CommandButton shortcut caps scale with text size. The RevealButton preview defaults to auto. Demos and supporting documentation and registry entries reflect the available surface options. TypeScript excludes 21st from compilation.

Initial behavior and rendering

CooldownButton adds a mount-time initial cooldown and centralizes cooldown execution. DoubtButton, RevealButton, and TrollButton accept initial confirmation, reveal, and offset settings. Their demos, registry entries, and documentation describe these options.
DemonicButton rendering and charge
components/evil-buttons/demonic-button.tsx, public/r/demonic-button.json, content/docs/demonic-button.mdx, 21st/demonic-button.demo.tsx
DemonicButton adds theme-specific fire palettes, scales its canvas and horns with button height, and renders a seeded frozen flame under reduced-motion settings. Its charge returns to the configured idle level after release.

Read the canvas theme from the nearest .dark ancestor, not only from <html>.

The auto surface uses Tailwind dark: classes. The variant docs say those classes apply "under a .dark ancestor". getThemeSnapshot checks only document.documentElement. A container can scope the theme, for example <div class="dark"> in a preview or a themed section. In that case the button face renders graphite, but dark stays false. The canvas then uses FIRE_RAMP_LIGHT, the light-page smoke mask, and the warm horn tip on a dark surface.

Use one rule for both the surface and the canvas. Check buttonRef.current?.closest(".dark") in the snapshot. Keep the MutationObserver, and add subtree: true so it also sees class changes on descendant containers.

🐛 Proposed fix
 function subscribeTheme(onChange: () => void) {
   const observer = new MutationObserver(onChange);
   observer.observe(document.documentElement, {
     attributes: true,
     attributeFilter: ["class"],
+    subtree: true,
   });
   return () => observer.disconnect();
 }
-const getThemeSnapshot = () =>
-  document.documentElement.classList.contains("dark");
 const getServerThemeSnapshot = () => false;

In the component:

const getThemeSnapshot = React.useCallback(
  () =>
    buttonRef.current
      ? buttonRef.current.closest(".dark") !== null
      : document.documentElement.classList.contains("dark"),
  [],
);
const pageDark = React.useSyncExternalStore(
  subscribeTheme,
  getThemeSnapshot,
  getServerThemeSnapshot,
);

Restart the animation loop when the motion preference changes.

When reduced motion is enabled, the loop stops at the idle charge. The change handler only updates reduceMotionRef, so switching to no-preference leaves the canvas frozen until another event, such as a press or resize, calls ensureLoop().

Initialize the charge from idleCharge.

When reduced motion is off, progressRef starts at zero. A button with idleCharge={0.6} initially has no horns or flame and takes about 1.3 seconds to reach its configured resting charge at the demo’s holdDuration. Initialize the ref from the clamped idle charge so the starting state appears on mount. (github.com)

Review comment at @public/r/demonic-button.json at line 12:
Initialize progressRef from the clamped idle charge so the button’s horns and
flame reflect its configured resting charge immediately on mount, regardless of
reduced-motion preference. Update the progressRef initialization in
DemonicButton and preserve the existing idle clamping behavior.
