Closes #579

What changed

  • Renamed the web side to match the console side: RequestPipeline, RequestContext, RequestStageInterface and Stages\Request are now WebPipeline, WebContext, WebStageInterface and Stages\Web. A commit of its own.
  • WebContext and ConsoleContext extend AppContext, built from it with the same base directory and container. getAppContext() is removed from WebContext.
  • AppContext keeps what both boots provide: getBaseDir(), getContainer(), getEnvironment() and getConfig(). getRequest(), getResponse() and getRoutes() are removed from it, because only the web boot registers them. getRequest() and getRoutes() are now on WebContext, read from the container.
  • WebContext no longer duplicates state: the matched route is read from the request and the view cache from the container (setMatchedRoute() and setViewCache() are gone). It stores only the response that is sent and the stopped flag, like ConsoleContext stores its exit code.
  • ResolveRouteStage always stores the lookup result on the request, null included, so a route set earlier can no longer skip the 404.
  • The web stages use $context->getRequest(), getRoutes() and getConfig() instead of request(), config() and Di::get(RouteCollection::class), as the console stages do. Same objects, same container.
  • ConsoleAppAdapter::start() returns the context's exit code without the redundant ?: ExitCode::SUCCESS.

Why

RequestContext kept iroute and the view cachethat the request and the container already held: the resolve stage set two copies and the send stage cleared only one. AppContext also offered
accessors only a web apses were nameddifferently from the console ones.

Breaking changes

AppContext::getRequest(), getResponse() and getRoutes() are removed. They shipped in 3.0.0 and nothing in the framework called them. Use
WebContext::getRequestesponse() for the shared
response. Everything ele unreleased 3.1.0.Documented in CHANGELOG.md.

How behavior was proven unchanged

  • Every commit compared working tree, with tests on both sides and a side-by-side run in throwaway copies of quantum/project. The whole branch against master is identical: 8 project states by 5 console commands, the baseline console outputs, and 10 web requests compared in fuge, API, HTML and JSON404, OPTIONS 204, view-cache miss and hit).
  • Existing stage assertions stay. Changed tests only move where the context gets something: the route is set on the request, the view cache is registered in the container. Tests for the removed methods were removed or replaced.
  • New tests were written first and shown failing. Mutation checks in a throwaway copy were each caught by the intended tests.

Validation

  • Full vendor/bin/phpunit: 1700 tests, 4096 assertions, 28 errors (Redis/Memcached connections, the same 28 as on master), 4 skipped (optional Twig not inst
  • composer cs:check and composer phpstan passed

Notes for reviewers

  • The response is unchanged: what the middleware chain returns is still stored on WebContext and sent. How a returned response relates to the shared response() (for example the JWT adapter's tokens, written into response()) is a separate change.
  • The stages still use response() and other global helpers, as does the code they call. Reading from the context makes the dependencies visible and matches the console sta from the globals.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Console commands now preserve a successful exit code of 0 instead of substituting another value.
    • Web requests use the request and configuration associated with their context for routing, dispatch, CORS handling, and response cleanup.
  • Refactor

    • Web request processing now uses a dedicated web context and pipeline, separating web-specific access from shared application context.
    • Route resolution and request handling are organized as web processing stages.

…h the console ones

RequestPipeline, RequestContext and RequestStageInterface become WebPipeline,
WebContext and WebStageInterface, and the Quantum\App\Stages\Request namespace
and folder become Quantum\App\Stages\Web, like ConsolePipeline, ConsoleContext,
ConsoleStageInterface and Stages\Console. The stage class names stay, because
"request" there means the HTTP request. The tests follow with the same names.

SendResponseStage::cleanupRequestContext() is now cleanupRequestState(): it clears
the state held by the HTTP request and had nothing to do with the class that was
renamed. The quantum-php#537 changelog entry uses the new names.

No behavior change: applying only this name mapping to the previous version of
every changed file gives the new file, apart from three docblock lines.

AppContext keeps only what both boots provide: the base directory, the
container, the environment and the config. The request and the routes
are read from the container by WebContext, which also keeps the
response the stages set. getAppContext() is removed from both contexts.

The route was stored both on the request and on the web context, and
the send stage cleared only the request's copy. ResolveRouteStage now
stores it on the request, and WebContext::getMatchedRoute() reads it
from there; setMatchedRoute() is removed from the context.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
PrepareRequestStage stored the view cache on the web context so that
DispatchRequestStage could read it back. The context now reads it from
the container, where PrepareRequestStage registers it, and
setViewCache() is removed.

…es from the context

The web stages read these services through the global request() and
config() helpers and Di::get(RouteCollection::class). They now use
$context->getRequest(), getRoutes() and getConfig(), as the console
stages already read their services from the console context. The
objects are the same ones from the same container, so nothing changes
at runtime. The WebContext docblock is updated to describe what the
stages set on it.

ResolveRouteStage left the request's route untouched when nothing
matched, so a route set on the request before the stage ran would skip
the 404 and be dispatched. The stage now always stores the result of
the route lookup, null included. Also order the imports in the web
stages and adapter longest first and declare the DiException the
context getters can throw.

…llback

ConsoleContext's exit code already defaults to ExitCode::SUCCESS, so the
"?: ExitCode::SUCCESS" fallback in ConsoleAppAdapter::start() never
changed the result.

📝 Walkthrough

The change separates web-specific request state and processing contracts from AppContext. The web adapter and stages now use WebContext and WebPipeline. ConsoleContext inherits from AppContext, and the console adapter returns the context’s exit code unchanged.

Changes: Context and pipeline refactor

Layer / File(s) Summary
Context ownership and access contracts
src/App/AppContext.php, src/App/Adapters/Web/WebContext.php, src/App/Adapters/Console/ConsoleContext.php, src/App/Adapters/Console/ConsoleAppAdapter.php, src/App/Contracts/WebStageInterface.php, tests/Unit/App/Adapters/*, tests/Unit/App/AppContextTest.php, CHANGELOG.md
AppContext no longer exposes request, response, or route accessors. WebContext and ConsoleContext inherit from it. Web request data and the view cache are accessed through WebContext. The console adapter returns its context exit code without replacing falsey values.
Web pipeline wiring and stage contract
src/App/Adapters/Web/WebAppAdapter.php, src/App/Adapters/Web/WebPipeline.php, tests/Unit/App/Adapters/Web/WebPipelineTest.php, tests/Unit/App/Adapters/Console/ConsolePipelineTest.php, CHANGELOG.md
The web adapter now runs WebPipeline with WebContext. The pipeline validates WebStageInterface stages and accepts WebContext. Pipeline tests use the web types.
Web stages use context-provided state
src/App/Stages/Request/ResolveRouteStage.php, src/App/Stages/Web/*, tests/Unit/App/Stages/Request/*, tests/Unit/App/Stages/Web/*
Web stages now accept WebContext and use its request, routes, configuration, and view cache. Route resolution stores a match, or null, on the request. Tests cover routing, dispatch, preflight, not-found handling, request preparation, and response cleanup using the web context.

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5fc45

Standard web startup is unaffected, but web adapters using a separate application context can fail to dispatch requests. Align cache registration with the supplied context before merging, or accept this bounded risk.

Comment thread src/App/Stages/Web/PrepareRequestStage.php Outdated
PrepareRequestStage registered and set up the view cache through the
static Di facade, while DispatchRequestStage reads it with
$context->getViewCache(). With a context over another container the
dispatch stage found no view cache, or one that was never set up. The
prepare stage now registers and sets it up through the context, like
the other web stages.
