Closes #576

What changed

  • ConsoleAppAdapter::__construct() is now only the boot pipeline inside the try that records a boot failure (Decide the console reduced boot by the environment file, not by the core:env command name #575): LoadHelpersStage, InitConsoleStage, LoadEnvironmentStage, LoadAppConfigStage, SetupConsoleApplicationStage, SetupErrorHandlerStage. The $input, $output and $application properties and createApplication() are gone.
  • New InitConsoleStage, like InitHttpStage: it registers the Symfony Application and the console output in the container (built on first use) and sets the command line input as an instance. It runs right after the helpers, before every stage that can fail, so a failed boot still leaves a working application for core:env, list and help. The input is an instance on purpose: the container would autowire ArgvInput's ?array $argv parameter as an empty array and lose the command line. It declares boot.console.before / boot.console.after.
  • New SetupConsoleApplicationStage names the application from app.name and app.version once the config is loaded (UNKNOWN when missing or null; an empty string or '0' is kept). After a failed boot it is not reached, so the application stays UNKNOWN, as before.
  • ConsoleContext is built as new ConsoleContext($this->context, $this->bootFailure) and reads the application, input and output from the container of its AppContext. start() defines the pipeline, builds the context and runs it, without touching Di or the config. ConsoleContext::getAppContext() was removed because nothing called it.
  • The adapter no longer makes the environment mutable for every command. KeyGenerateCommand and InstallToolkitCommand, the only updateRow() callers, already do it themselves. This is its own commit.

Why

WebAppAdapter only builds a boot pipeline and runs it. The console constructor created the Symfony objects itself, stored them as properties and passed them to the context. Making the console follow the web adapter's shape, with the one thing the console needs and the web does not (the recoverable boot from #575), keeps the two adapters alike and removes the createApplication() test seam.

Breaking changes

  • ConsoleAppAdapter::createApplication() and ConsoleContext::getAppContext() are removed, and ConsoleContext's constructor changed. All three were introduced by Refactor WebAppAdapter::start() and ConsoleAppAdapter::start() into structured runtime pipelines #537 in the unreleased 3.1.0.
  • The console no longer marks the environment mutable for every command. A command outside the framework that calls environment()->updateRow() must call setMutable(true) first, or it gets EnvException::environmentImmutable(). Documented in the changelog.

How behavior was proven unchanged

  • Every commit compared the commit before it with the working tree: the tests on both sides, and a side-by-side run in throwaway copies of quantum/project. For the whole branch against master: the 7 project states (ok, .env missing, empty, malformed, broken app config, broken logging config, fs.php calling env() with no .env) by 5 commands (core:env --yes, list, core:version, unknown command, no command) are identical to master, as are the output of the seven baseline console commands, core:key --yes (still changes APP_KEY), core:env --yes (still creates .env), a syntax error in a framework helper (the same parse error) and the web smoke (/, /en, /api/posts, 404 in HTML and JSON, OPTIONS 204, debugbar).
  • Every assertion of the existing tests stays. The ones that read the application through the old property now read it from the container; the adapter test that expected a mutable environment now expects the opposite, and the command tests set the environment back to not mutable first, so they prove the commands do not rely on the adapter (AppTestCase makes it mutable for every test).
  • Mutation checks in a throwaway copy of the repo, one pass per change: 3 of 3, 7 of 7, 9 of 9 and 11 of 11 mutations were caught by the intended tests (stage left out, run after the stages that can fail, naming before the config, input registered as a class, context building its own objects, a failed boot not recorded or not substituted, and so on).

Validation

  • Full vendor/bin/phpunit: 1694 tests, 4062 assertions, 28 errors (Redis/Memcached connections, the same 28 as on master), 4 skipped (optional Twig not installed). One earlier run showed an extra error in MailTrapTest that passed alone three times and did not repeat in a second full run.
  • composer cs:check and composer phpstan passed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Console applications now use the configured application name and version, with “UNKNOWN” used when either is missing.
    • Console application, input, and output services are available through the application container, including when boot fails.
  • Changes

    • The console adapter no longer accepts or exposes console objects directly; the console context retrieves them from the application container.
    • Commands that update an immutable environment must explicitly make it mutable first.
    • Console commands that require the application environment cannot run when boot fails; commands that do not require it, such as list, remain available.

…le command

The console adapter marked the environment mutable after every boot, which
the web adapter does not do. The only commands that write to the env file,
`core:key` and the toolkit installer, already make it mutable themselves, so
the step is removed. A command outside the framework that calls
`environment()->updateRow()` now has to make the environment mutable first.

Replaced on purpose: the adapter test that expected a mutable environment now
expects the opposite. AppTestCase makes the environment mutable for every
test, so the two command tests now set it back to not mutable first, which
lets them prove that the commands do not depend on the adapter.

…ation, input and output

InitConsoleStage registers the Symfony Application and the console output in
the container, the way InitHttpStage registers Request and Response, and sets
the command line input as an instance, because the container would autowire
the ?array $argv parameter as an empty array and lose the command line. It
declares boot.console.before and boot.console.after.

The stage is not part of any pipeline yet; the console adapter starts using
it in a later commit.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The constructor now only builds the boot stage list and runs it inside the try
that records a boot failure, like WebAppAdapter does, with InitConsoleStage
right after the helpers. The Symfony Application, the input and the output
are no longer adapter properties and createApplication() is gone: start()
reads them from the container, names the application from the app config at
its first fetch, and builds the context inside the same try as the pipeline,
so a failed helpers stage still surfaces as the original failure.

The adapter tests no longer stub createApplication(). They register a
non-exiting test Application in the container, or let the container build the
new NonExitingApplication test helper, and keep every assertion; the ones that
read the application now read it from the container. New tests cover the
objects in the container after a successful and a failed boot and a helper
file that cannot be loaded.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ontainer

The context owns the container through the AppContext, so the console
application, input and output no longer have to be passed in. ConsoleContext is
built with the AppContext and the boot failure only, and its getters read the
objects from the container when asked. start() no longer touches Di or the
config; it defines the pipeline, builds the context and runs it.

The application is named by a new boot stage right after the config is loaded.
After a failed boot that stage is not reached and the application keeps
Symfony's UNKNOWN default, as before. ConsoleContext::getAppContext() is
removed because nothing called it.

Replaced on purpose: the ConsoleContext test that asserted getAppContext().
The test helper that builds a console context now registers the chosen
Application, input and output in the container; no other assertion changed.

📝 Walkthrough

The console adapter now initializes Symfony console services through boot stages. ConsoleContext resolves those services from AppContext’s container. The adapter no longer stores the services or exposes createApplication(), and full boot no longer sets environment mutability.

Changes: Console boot and service access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and configure console services
src/App/Stages/Boot/*, tests/Unit/App/Stages/Boot/*, tests/Unit/App/BootPipelineTest.php
InitConsoleStage conditionally registers the application, input, and output. SetupConsoleApplicationStage sets the application name and version from configuration, defaulting null values to UNKNOWN. Tests cover registration, existing services, and configured values.

Explanation

The implementation satisfies several [#576] objectives. It removes the console object properties and createApplication(). ConsoleContext reads the objects from the container. Tests cover registration, precedence, boot failure, command behavior, and environment mutability. However, concrete [#576] requirements are not met. ConsoleAppAdapter runs InitConsoleStage first and SetupConsoleApplicationStage last, but the issue requires InitConsoleStage after LoadAppConfigStage and requires the stage list to end with InitConsoleStage. InitConsoleStage declares no boot events, although the issue requires the specified event names. Application naming is implemented in a separate post-config stage, while the issue requires InitConsoleStage to register the application with the configured name and version or UNKNOWN values.

Resolution

Change the boot stage order and stage responsibilities to match [#576]. Place InitConsoleStage after LoadAppConfigStage and at the end of the required list. Declare the required boot event names. Ensure application registration uses the required configured or UNKNOWN name and version behavior. Update the related tests to verify the exact order, events, and registration behavior.

… when it is missing

The test that writes a helper file with a syntax error into the test app
helpers folder assumed the folder exists, which it only does locally because
other tests leave it behind; a clean checkout has no such folder, so writing
the file failed on CI. The test now creates the folder when it is missing and
removes it afterwards, like the other tests that write app helpers.

The quantum-php#537 entry still said that ConsoleAppAdapter::createApplication() stays
public, which is no longer true because the quantum-php#576 entry removes it. The claim is
dropped and the quantum-php#576 entry now says where to get the application instead.

…oot succeeded

SetupConsoleApplicationStage ran right after the config was loaded, so when the
error handler stage failed after it (for example on a broken logging config)
the application already had its configured name, while on master it keeps
Symfony's UNKNOWN default unless the whole boot succeeds. The stage now runs
last, after SetupErrorHandlerStage, and the changelog says so.

A new adapter test breaks the logging config and expects the recorded boot
failure and the UNKNOWN application; it uses a small helper that replaces the
content of any test app file and restores it afterwards, which the environment
file helper now delegates to.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…re loaded

InitConsoleStage ran second, after LoadHelpersStage, so when a project helper
file failed to load the application, input and output were never registered and
`core:env` and `list` stopped working, while on master the application was built
before anything could fail and both still ran. The stage now runs first.

The pipeline cannot dispatch stage events before the helpers are loaded, so the
boot.console.before and boot.console.after names it declared could never fire;
the constants are removed and the stage is listed with the stages that declare
no events.

Replaced on purpose: the test that expected a ParseError from `list` when a helper
file cannot be loaded, which master does not do. Three tests now cover `list`
and a command that does not need the environment running, and a command that
needs it being rejected with the helper error.
