Raise MalformedJSON for mismatched closing tokens - #25
parse_json() / fix_fast() raise IndexError or AssertionError for malformed input with an unexpected or mismatched closing bracket:
parse_json("]") # IndexError: pop from empty listparse_json('{"a": 1]') # AssertionError: Expected '{' at index 0, got '['parse_json("[1, 2}") # AssertionError
The documented behaviour (and the non-fast fix()) is MalformedJSON, a JSONDecodeError subclass, which is what callers catch. Since fix_fast is the default path, loads() leaks exception types that are not JSON errors.
Why
fix_fast pops the container stack with assert _char == "{" / assert _char == "[". A pop on an empty stack raises IndexError, a type mismatch raises AssertionError, and under python -O the asserts are stripped entirely.
How
Validate before popping and raise MalformedJSON for both the empty-stack and mismatched-type cases. This also keeps the check active under python -O.
Tests
Added tests/test_examples.py::test_malformed_closing_tokens covering "]", "}", "[}", "{]", '{"a": 1]', "[1, 2}" through both fix_fast() and parse_json().
Before: pytest tests/test_examples.py → 10 passed, the new test fails with IndexError: pop from empty list.
After: pytest tests/test_examples.py → 11 passed.
tests/test_hypotheses.py mains (test_partial_json, test_fine_json, 333 examples each) → OK.
black --check and isort --check-only on the changed files pass.
No linked issue; found while auditing fix_fast against the slow fix path.
fix_fast() now raises MalformedJSON for unexpected or mismatched closing braces and brackets, including when the container stack is empty.
Added coverage for six malformed inputs through both fix_fast() and parse_json(). The PR reports that the targeted examples and Hypothesis tests pass, and that formatting checks pass.
The parser now raises MalformedJSON when fix_fast encounters an unexpected or mismatched closing brace or bracket. The error includes the token and its index. Tests verify this behavior through both fix_fast and parse_json.
A narrow class of malformed JSON inputs is silently accepted, but the fix is localized.

Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Check closing tokens after a top-level string.

Check closing tokens after a top-level string.
This return bypasses the new checks. For '"x"]', fix_fast discards the closing bracket and parse_json returns "x" instead of raising MalformedJSON. (raw.githubusercontent.com) Scan for closing tokens before delegating to _fix.

Review comment at @src/partial_json_parser/core/myelin.py around lines 36 - 37:
Update the top-level string branch in fix_fast to check for closing tokens
before returning through _fix, so trailing closing brackets are rejected as
MalformedJSON. Preserve the existing _fix behavior for valid top-level strings.
