What problem does this PR solve?

Add row-wise Boolean Local MATCH to TiFlash scalar execution so eligible filters can run without relying on TiCI or inverted-index consistency. Related: pingcap/tidb#71397, pingcap/tidb#71839.

ref #10233

What is changed and how it works?

  • Implement LocalMatchAgainstBoolean = 5250: decode the Boolean AST/analyzer payload from Expr.val and evaluate document columns per row in TiFlash Selection. Semantic protocol version 2 is shared with TiDB; unsupported versions and malformed metadata, including missing or invalid node occurrence/term-type enums, are rejected with ILLEGAL_COLUMN before NULL-search or analyzer no-match shortcuts. This is a scalar path, not scan-level FTS/TiCI index access.
  • Use a dedicated buildLocalMatchAgainstBoolean DAG expression builder to adapt Expr.val into the runtime function's final constant argument. Preserve expression collation and include metadata in action identity so different analyzer/query configurations cannot alias the same expression action.
  • Support the existing required/optional/prohibited words, phrases and trailing-prefix subset with STANDARD/NGRAM, configured token lengths, built-in stopwords, collation and NULL/multi-column documents. Return Boolean 0/1 values, not relevance scores.
  • Use MATCH collation for token comparison and independent server collation for stopwords. Generated Unicode 15.0.0 classification matches Go's BMP word lexer; NGRAM documents retain valid multibyte characters and terminate on malformed UTF-8. Preserve positions and verify necessary filtered phrases against the unfiltered document stream.
  • Compile queries and owned built-in stopword keys per block. Reuse execution-local buffers/scratch, borrow only stable input-column strings, and scope short-circuit and failed-phrase-verification state per column. No document/result cache or shared mutable lookup is introduced.
  • Replace repeated NGRAM substring enumeration with a per-run sliding scan over candidate endings. Track one past the greatest matched stopword start and filter a gram exactly while it contains that occurrence. Reset at run boundaries and bound candidates by gram size and the current ASCII built-in stopword lengths. Stopwords OFF/unfiltered streams use a separate simple loop with inline token output.
  • Product matcher/character-classification/DAG/block regressions are included in this PR. Real-cluster E2E, MySQL oracles and performance/profile/pressure tools are maintained separately, pending unified test-system integration.
  • The paired TiDB gate (default OFF) controls both local paths. TiDB requires matching public FULLTEXT parser metadata, accepts complete composite column sets in any order, rejects mixed MATCH-column collations, disables Local MATCH plan cache and retains unsupported split-prefix/legacy-collation evaluation at root. No inverted-index contents are read.

Dependencies

Paired with TiDB PR pingcap/tidb#71839. The scalar-ID reservation pingcap/tipb#431 and feature protocol pingcap/tipb#432 are merged. Both products use the official PingCAP Tipb revision 4044aac591d778250cad3488dfd6e6f574411f1a: TiDB through module version v0.0.0-20261014084553-4044aac591d7 and TiFlash through contrib/tipb. The forked Tipb dependency is no longer required. Compatible TiFlash support must be deployed before enabling TiDB pushdown that emits this protocol.

Correctness verification (2026-10-12)

The correctness and performance results below are historical evidence from the 2026-10-12 validation runs, not a fresh rerun of the current PR heads. The latest follow-up changes have not been rerun locally; their validation is left to CI for the corresponding PR heads. Historical E2E/performance results do not establish current-head or formal release acceptance.

  • Focused Go analyzer/parser/generator and expression/planner regressions passed; fulltext unit and race tests passed. All 31 paired TiFlash Local MATCH/character-classification/DAG/block gtests passed.
  • Selected real TiUP E2E passed locally and independently on h124. Coverage includes Boolean evaluation, seeded differential checks, committed snapshots, large documents, range/plans, prepared/cache behavior, collation regressions and stopwords.
  • Native tests wait for replica AVAILABLE=1, compare complete matched results and require MATCH in mpp[tiflash] Selection without a root MATCH residual. Fallback tests compare complete row IDs and assert TiDB root evaluation. No TiCI path is used.
  • Real MySQL 8.0.44 InnoDB / Go matcher / TiDB fallback / TiFlash MPP comparisons passed at NGRAM sizes 1, 2 and 3, each with 680 searches and 40 NULL/NOT checks.
  • Separate regression checks completed 3,648 successful timed queries and 1,104 complete-result/plan verifications with no query errors or selected correctness regressions. Finite test matrices do not prove complete MySQL compatibility or full-repository correctness.

Performance verification

On the shared h124 server, a development benchmark used 20,000 × 4 KiB repeated synthetic documents, STANDARD/NGRAM, stopwords OFF/ON, five query shapes, default MPP settings and native SQL threads=1. Single-connection TiFlash MPP end-to-end P50 was 2.96–6.95× faster than TiDB fallback across the selected cases; complete matched IDs and actual plan placement were checked. This compares different scan engines and execution paths, not isolated Go/C++ matcher speed.

Separate paired regression checks observed persistent small increases for NGRAM size=2 with stopwords ON: about 0.8–1.0% for TiDB word/prefix/phrase in an independent follow-up and 1.3–2.2% for TiFlash prefix/CJK in the main measurements. Root cause is not established; do not claim zero performance regression or use other cases' improvements to cancel these observations.

These are development measurements, not an SLA or release acceptance. The host is shared, CPU frequency is not pinned, the corpus is repetitive and highly compressible, and h124 TiFlash is RELWITHDEBINFO (-O2 -g -DNDEBUG), not an official release package. Tests use official v8.5.8 PD/TiKV with locally built modified products, identified by runtime versions and binary fingerprints; TiDB identity is checked with tidb_version(). Raw logs, measurements, complete-result/plan records and detailed reports are retained outside the product repositories and are not public CI artifacts.

Remaining acceptance work

  • Historical focused product unit/regression tests and real-cluster result/plan verification
  • Historical NGRAM 1/2/3 MySQL comparisons and selected performance/regression measurements
  • Use merged official Tipb protocol dependencies in both products
  • Integrate external correctness, performance and pressure suites into the unified test system
  • Resolve or explicitly assess the observed small performance increases for release acceptance
  • Formal release-binary, resource/sanitizer, broader concurrency and replica/schema/mixed-version lifecycle acceptance

Opt-in memory pressure was skipped; ASAN/UBSAN and full token/position differential coverage remain pending. Ready for code review does not mean formal release acceptance.

Release note

Support gated Local MATCH Boolean filters through TiFlash row-wise scalar computation without TiCI index lookup, including NGRAM built-in stopword filtering.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a version-2 Boolean full-text matching function with STANDARD and NGRAM analyzers. The change connects the function to DAG expressions and function registration, and adds tests for query handling, matching, collations, and tokenization. It also updates the TIPB subproject reference, adds standard library includes, and pins test-cluster images to release-8.5 tags.

Yes, the expressions are logically equivalent. This rewrite was made in commit cd0b66d to address a readability-simplify-boolean-expr diagnostic from clang-tidy during CI. The repository treats clang-tidy warnings as errors. It does not change JSON behavior; we retained it to satisfy the lint check.

Added this equivalent Go predicate in solotzg@71904a207d, and synchronized the generator template in solotzg/tidb@6bf2b1a00d so regeneration preserves the explanation. The comment also distinguishes the helper's full Unicode classification from the Boolean lexer's separate BMP restriction (r <= 0xFFFF). This is documentation-only; the table and runtime classification are unchanged.

Yes, this change is intentional and necessary. The EE team does not guarantee that the Docker registry/image repository addresses remain stable, and the previously hard-coded repositories are no longer recommended. Requiring explicit PD_IMAGE, TIKV_IMAGE, and TIDB_IMAGE lets the invoking environment supply the maintained image locations and the appropriate component builds, without encoding obsolete registry assumptions or silently falling back to master images in these compose files.

Could we reject invalid node enums here instead of treating them as a query that matches nothing? The PR description says that invalid metadata is rejected, but an unset occur (defaulting to Invalid) reaches this branch and silently produces non-NULL zeros. The term_type default branch has the same behavior.

This is based on code inspection; I have not run a malformed-payload test, and I do not see evidence that the current TiDB serializer emits these values. Still, returning a normal no-match result can hide protocol construction errors. Please validate both node enums and throw ILLEGAL_COLUMN, with regression tests for missing/invalid occur and term_type.

Fixed in solotzg@71904a207d. The metadata decoder now validates every node's occur and term_type before NULL-search and analyzer no-match early returns. Missing, explicitly Invalid, or unknown enum values are rejected with ILLEGAL_COLUMN; the compiler's default branches also throw instead of treating malformed metadata as a normal no-match query.

Added regression coverage for both fields with missing/Invalid/unknown wire values, including a malformed node after a valid one, NULL searches, and analyzer no-match settings (24 combinations). I have not run these tests locally; validation is left to PR CI.

Nice optimization! TiDB could adopt the same sliding-window approach to avoid repeated stopword checks across overlapping ngrams.
