Servers that advertise soju.im/FILEHOST (soju, Parley) now get uploads and media previews.

  • Read the soju.im/FILEHOST ISUPPORT token and trust its origin for previews like the other file hosts.
  • Upload to it the way the soju spec asks: the file is the whole POST body, with Content-Type and Content-Disposition, and HTTP Basic auth from the SASL PLAIN login. We only send credentials over https.
  • Resolve a relative Location against the upload URL. This also applies to draft/FILEHOST.
  • draft/FILEHOST keeps the multipart form, which s.h4ks.com expects. We use it first, then soju.im/FILEHOST, then obby.world/FILEHOST.
  • Fill the {size} placeholder in a draft/ICON network icon URL (Parley sends one).

Spec: https://codeberg.org/emersion/soju/src/branch/master/doc/ext/filehost.md

Tested on the Android emulator against a stand-in soju file host: the file arrived as a raw body, the relative Location became a full link, and the preview showed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for uploading files through soju servers that advertise an upload endpoint. Secure endpoints can use your IRC credentials for authentication.
    • Upload links returned as relative paths are now resolved against the upload endpoint, making them usable as complete links.
    • Server icons now display correctly when their advertised URL includes a {size} placeholder, which is replaced with the supported icon size.

📝 Walkthrough
📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds support for soju FILEHOST endpoints. ISUPPORT handling records valid endpoints, and ChatArea can upload files to them using raw request bodies and HTTPS Basic authentication. Existing tokenless and vendor upload paths remain available.

Changes

File-host upload support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server file-host discovery
src/types/index.ts, src/protocol/isupport.ts, src/lib/ircUtils.tsx
The Server type and host-list utility include sojuFileHost. ISUPPORT stores advertised HTTP(S) soju file-host values. Favicon values replace {size} with 128.
Direct upload transport
src/lib/mediaUpload.ts, tests/lib/mediaUpload.test.ts
Upload options now support raw-body requests and optional authorization. The response parser resolves relative Location values against the endpoint. filehostBasicAuth encodes credentials only for HTTPS endpoints when both account and password are present. Tests cover these cases.
ChatArea upload selection
src/components/layout/ChatArea.tsx
ChatArea selects the first tokenless endpoint, or a soju endpoint with saved credentials when no tokenless endpoint exists. Vendor policy and bearer-token uploads run when no direct endpoint is selected.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 35fe3

Uploads can fail on auth-protected Soju file hosts when credentials are unavailable or the endpoint is HTTP; anonymous-upload hosts are unaffected. The impact is limited to those configurations.

262-264: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

btoa(String.fromCharCode(...bytes)) can overflow the call stack for long passwords.

Spread arguments have an engine-dependent size limit. Credentials are normally short, so this is unlikely in practice. A loop-based conversion removes the limit.

Proposed fix
-  const bytes = new TextEncoder().encode(`${account}:${password}`);
-  return `Basic ${btoa(String.fromCharCode(...bytes))}`;
+  const bytes = new TextEncoder().encode(`${account}:${password}`);
+  let binary = "";
+  for (const b of bytes) binary += String.fromCharCode(b);
+  return `Basic ${btoa(binary)}`;

Reject direct soju uploads without usable authorization.

directUploadFor returns a direct-upload configuration when sojuFileHost exists, even if filehostBasicAuth returns undefined. handleFilesUpload passes that configuration to uploadFileTokenless, which omits Authorization but still sends the raw body. A host that requires authentication can reject the upload.

Return null when authentication is unavailable. This preserves the rule that credentials are never sent over cleartext HTTP.

🐛 Suggested fix
   const soju = server?.sojuFileHost;
   if (!soju) return null;
   const saved = loadSavedServers().find((s) => s.id === server.id);
+  const authorization = filehostBasicAuth(
+    soju,
+    saved?.saslAccountName || saved?.nickname,
+    saved?.saslPassword,
+  );
+  if (!authorization) return null;
   return {
     endpoint: soju,
     rawBody: true,
-    authorization: filehostBasicAuth(
-      soju,
-      saved?.saslAccountName || saved?.nickname,
-      saved?.saslPassword,
-    ),
+    authorization,
   };
