Problem

The kokoro CLI reloads the ONNX model on every call, and interactive mode plays audio to the speakers. Other programs had no way to get synthesized audio from a long-lived process.

Solution

Add kokoro-server, an OpenAI-compatible text-to-speech HTTP server that loads the model once:

  • POST /v1/audio/speech:
    • Fields: input, voice (default from -v), speed (> 0) and response_format.
    • Formats: wav (16-bit PCM, mono, 24 kHz; the default) or pcm (the same samples raw, s16le).
    • Other formats, unknown voices and invalid fields get HTTP 400 with an OpenAI-style JSON error.
    • model and instructions are ignored.
  • GET /v1/audio/voices returns {"voices": [...]}; GET /health returns {"status":"ok"}.
  • Takes the same engine options as kokoro, plus --host (default 127.0.0.1) and --port (default 8880). No authentication; keep it on loopback.
  • One shared context; SpeechService serializes kokoro_synthesize behind a mutex.
  • The listen socket uses SO_REUSEADDR (SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE on Windows) instead of httplib's SO_REUSEPORT default. With the default, a second server could bind the same port and silently share requests.
  • Vendors cpp-httplib v0.63.0 and nlohmann/json v3.12.0, both MIT, recorded in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
  • The CLI's engine option parsers move to src/cli/engine_options.h so both front ends use them; CLI behavior is unchanged.

Tests

  • server: request parsing and WAV/PCM encoding, no model needed.
  • server_synthesis: starts the routes in-process on a random port with the real model and checks WAV, PCM, unknown-voice and mp3 responses plus the voice list. Skipped when models are missing.

Evidence (Linux x64)

  • ctest --test-dir build -C Release: 8/8 passed, server and server_synthesis not skipped.
  • curl against the running server:
    • A WAV request returned 200 audio/wav; file reports WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, mono 24000 Hz.
    • response_format: "mp3" returned 400 application/json with "param":"response_format".
    • /v1/audio/voices listed the loaded voices.
  • A second kokoro-server on the same port exits 1 with cannot listen on 127.0.0.1:8880. --port 0 and a stray positional argument exit 2 with usage errors.
  • An OpenClaw speech provider plugin (kokoro-cpp) used this server end to end.

Windows and macOS builds have not run locally; CI covers them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added kokoro-server, an HTTP server with OpenAI-compatible speech synthesis, voice-listing, and health endpoints.
    • Speech responses support WAV and PCM formats. Requests can specify a voice and speed, with configurable defaults.
    • Added command-line options for model, voice, language, device, GPU, host, and port settings.
  • Documentation
    • Added server setup, usage, endpoint, and request details to the project documentation.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for request validation, audio formats, and server synthesis.

kokoro-server loads the model once and serves POST /v1/audio/speech (16-bit PCM WAV or raw PCM at 24 kHz), GET /v1/audio/voices and GET /health. Requests share one context behind a mutex; other formats, unknown voices and invalid fields get OpenAI-style 400 errors.

Vendors cpp-httplib v0.63.0 and nlohmann/json v3.12.0. The listen socket uses SO_REUSEADDR (SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE on Windows) instead of httplib's SO_REUSEPORT default, so a second server on the same port fails. The engine option parsers move to src/cli/engine_options.h for both front ends. Adds the server and server_synthesis tests.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5ce1

Extreme speed values can fail after validation rather than receiving a field-specific error. Guard the conversion before merging, or accept this bounded edge-case risk.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f5ce1

The server defaults to loopback and correctly isolates request output while serializing synthesis. However, unauthenticated callers who can connect can submit expensive work without bounded queue admission or synthesis cancellation. The principal risk is denial of service affecting the server and its host resources; wider network exposure requires an explicit address override.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new anonymous HTTP path admits work without a queue cap or synthesis deadline. Concurrent requests can occupy workers behind the shared synthesis mutex while additional accepted connections accumulate, allowing a reachable caller to starve legitimate speech and health requests or exhaust process resources. Loopback defaults restrict the default attacker population; an explicit non-loopback bind expands it. The payload limit and per-chunk inference processing do not bound aggregate queued work or inference lifetime.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported attack scope is the server process, its shared inference capacity, host memory, and accepted socket resources. Default reachability is local; non-loopback binding can extend access to reachable network peers. The evidence does not demonstrate cross-tenant data access, credential acquisition, or authority over other services.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to connect can repeatedly submit valid synthesis requests. Workers wait on the single synthesis mutex while the default task queue continues accepting connections without a configured cap. Legitimate requests, including health checks using the same dispatcher, can be delayed. This is a newly introduced availability path; the exact exhaustion threshold and process-level failure outcome remain unmeasured.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Anonymous HTTP input crosses into native synthesis after structural parsing, format checks, and loaded-voice validation. Loopback is the default access boundary, not authentication. Startup installs a replacement socket-options callback using SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE on Windows or SO_REUSEADDR elsewhere instead of retaining the HTTP library's SO_REUSEPORT default.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Engine exceptions are converted to status values, audio buffers have request-local cleanup, and the HTTP dispatcher catches route exceptions with an outer connection guard. These controls counter an assertion that an ordinary encoding exception necessarily terminates the process. They do not provide work admission limits or preempt active inference; generated audio is accumulated before encoding, and the WAV size check occurs afterward.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Introduce finite connection and synthesis admission with explicit overload rejection, work and output budgets, and deadline or cancellation propagation where the engine supports it. Cancellation must not release or reuse the shared context while inference is still running.
  • proposed — Keep the documented loopback deployment as the baseline. If network binding is supported operationally, require an explicit access-control boundary and constrained execution identity rather than treating the host override as sufficient deployment configuration.

Reject speed values that cannot convert to a positive float.

parse_speed checks the JSON number only as a double. A finite value above std::numeric_limits<float>::max(), such as 1e300, reaches static_cast<float>(value). The C++ standard leaves that out-of-range conversion undefined. On IEEE targets it produces infinity. A positive value below the smallest float subnormal, such as 1e-60, converts to 0.0f. kokoro_synthesize rejects both converted values, so the request fails after parsing with the C API's invalid-argument error instead of the speed validation message.

The repository defines speed as greater than zero, so keep that bound rather than the OpenAI 0.25–4.0 range. Check the converted value in the parser:
