Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the contribution guide to require signed commits on the default branch. Contributors must use a GitHub-registered SSH signing key and verified committer email; apps, bots and workflows should use the documented signing options.
    • Pull requests must be squash-merged. Unsigned commits on pull request branches must be replaced with signed commits, and rebase merging is unavailable.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide adds signed-commit requirements for commits reaching the default branch. It describes signing procedures for people, agents, apps, bots, and workflows, and specifies squash merges and how to handle unsigned commits.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing requirements and procedures
.github/CONTRIBUTING.md
The guide requires signed commits for the default branch. It describes signing methods, requires squash merges, explains how to replace unsigned commits, and states that rebase merges are disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f006f

The new SSH signing guidance conflicts with the threat model’s GPG wording, which may leave contributors unsure which formats are accepted. Align the documentation before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f006f

The change documents signing requirements without changing permissions or enforcement. No introduced security defect is established, but the claimed signing and merge controls could not be independently confirmed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is source-contribution provenance at this repository’s PR and default-branch boundary. The added documentation does not itself grant write privileges or change application, deployment, or data-store authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Human and interactive-agent signing is documented as requiring a GitHub-registered SSH signing key and verified committer email. Automation is directed through API-based creation so that GitHub signs commits. These are provenance procedures, not documented grants of repository authorization.
  • inferred — A replacement commit’s signature does not by itself establish original-author authorization or completeness of the replaced history. The documentation introduces no executable transition handling, so missing evidence about repeated, interrupted, concurrent, or abandoned replacements is not an established PR-introduced vulnerability.

Do not state that rebase merging is disabled without a repository-specific source.

The estate policy makes merge settings repository-dependent. The repository API returns null for allow_rebase_merge, and the current API identity has no admin permission. The available evidence does not establish this setting.

Align the threat model with the SSH signing guidance.

docs/architecture/THREAT-MODEL.adoc, Lines 79-85, still says “Require GPG-signed commits”. This section directs people and interactive agents to use SSH signing keys, as does the linked estate policy. Update the threat-model mitigation to require verified signatures without prescribing GPG, or state the supported signing formats. (github.com)
