Phone guest profile: an Android Emulator rendering on the passed-through GPU - #1400
The first PR of phones mode (docs/fleet/ARCHITECTURE.md, "Phones mode", added here): an fcvm VM with one GPU runs an Android Emulator whose GPU rendering goes to that GPU, checked on a g4dn.metal by make phone-test.
Contract
make phone-test GPU=<addr> ACCEPT_ANDROID_SDK_LICENSE=1 boots a phone-profile VM with the GPU (restored from its pre-start snapshot, as every GPU VM is), and passes only if KVM runs a VM inside it, Android boots with -gpu host, and both SurfaceFlinger's and an app's GLES renderer name the GPU nvidia-smi reports, with the app drawing at 30 fps or more.
Downstream impact: a new kernel profile (phone, amd64 only), a new Firecracker pin for it, new make targets and files under fleet/phone and scripts/phone. The wall's gpu profile, its Firecracker and its snapshots are unchanged. Nothing in CI runs the new test (it needs a GPU host), like the other GPU tests (gpu-routed-test, gpu-residue-test).
Changes
rootfs-config.toml, kernel/phone-x86.conf: phone.amd64 = the gpu profile's kernel plus KVM, its NVIDIA driver table, and the Firecracker fork's agent/vfio-nested-state commit (x86_64: save and restore the vCPU's nested virtualization state firecracker#23), which saves and restores KVM's nested state. Linux executes VMXON when kvm_intel loads, so without that state a restored guest's next VMX instruction faults.
fleet/phone: the container (emulator from a mapped SDK; glvnd and Vulkan ICD files for the NVIDIA libraries CDI mounts), phone.sh (boot with -gpu host and gfxstream's EGL-on-EGL engine, which needs no X display; masks the SDK's SwiftShader EGL inside the container so the lookup reaches NVIDIA's), kvmprobe.c, and a GLES 3 probe app.
scripts/phone/sdk.sh: fetches the pinned emulator, platform-tools, build-tools, platform and AOSP Android 15 x86_64 image by SHA-256, refuses without ACCEPT_ANDROID_SDK_LICENSE=1, builds the probe app without Gradle. scripts/phone/run.sh: the checks above. make setup-phone, make phone-test.
Concurrent runs share nothing mutable (second, fourth and fifth commits, from review): scripts/phone/sdk.sh installs under an flock on the SDK directory; the default SDK directory is keyed by the pins (--sdk-path), so an installed package is never replaced; the probe app is built in a private directory and published once as probe-<hash of its sources>.apk, which run.sh installs by exact path (--probe-path); the phone image is tagged by fleet/phone's contents (run.sh --image, sixth commit). scripts/phone/test-sdk-lock.sh fails without it ("2 sdk.sh runs were installing into one SDK at the same time") and passes with it; make phone-test runs it first.
docs/fleet/ARCHITECTURE.md licensing wording: an AOSP system image is not Apache 2.0 as a whole (third commit, from review).
NESTED.md: the x86 "restored VM has no usable VMX" note gets its cause and this fix.
docs/fleet/ARCHITECTURE.md: the Phones mode design, the spike's numbers, the paths considered, the snapshot flow (detach and re-attach of the emulator's renderer with gfxstream's own save/load), invariants, failure states, licensing, and the stack of PRs.
Evidence
On a g4dn.metal (T4, driver 580.196.07):
$ make phone-test GPU=<addr> ACCEPT_ANDROID_SDK_LICENSE=1
phone VM healthy after 12186 ms; restore ack_ms=6385 gpu_ms=956.667
ok the phone VM was restored from its snapshot
ok the VM has GPU 'Tesla T4'
ok KVM runs a VM inside the restored phone VM
ok Android booted with the host GPU: boot_completed_ms=31098
ok SurfaceFlinger: GLES: Google (NVIDIA Corporation), Android Emulator OpenGL ES Translator (Tesla T4/PCIe/SSE2), OpenGL ES 3.1 (OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 580.196.07)
ok the app's GLES context: renderer=Android Emulator OpenGL ES Translator (Tesla T4/PCIe/SSE2) vendor=
ok the app draws: lowest of its last 8 fps samples 59.8
Red: the same script with PHONE_PROFILE naming a copy of the profile pinned to the gpu profile's Firecracker commit (1433710c4):
ok the phone VM was restored from its snapshot
ok the VM has GPU 'Tesla T4'
FAIL KVM in the restored VM
FAIL Android did not boot
(the guest's kernel oopses in kvm_spurious_fault). The fork's unit test test_vmx_operation_survives_save_and_restore fails on 1433710c4 and passes on the pinned commit; see ejc3/firecracker#23.
scripts/phone/test-sdk-lock.sh, five cases, each observed red on the commit before its fix: two runs on one SDK take turns (red on 12ea81e); two SDKs build in two directories (red on 2446be9); a checkout's probe app stays its own when another checkout builds (red on a8a2244); other pins use another SDK directory (red on the previous sdk.sh); other phone containers use another image tag (red on 1786460). All green on 997c008, and make phone-test passes on 997c008.
make test-unit on the config and repository-structure tests (embedded_config_pins_every_firecracker_it_builds, the profile and nvidia config tests, test_documented_make_targets, test_ami_hash_inputs, test_ci_workflow_coverage, test_dep_provenance and others): 198 passed. shellcheck -S warning on the new scripts: clean.
Licensing
The test uses Google's SDK emulator and AOSP system image unmodified, on our own host, to develop and test the app, which the Android SDK License Agreement (3.1) allows; it forbids modifying or redistributing them (3.4). What ships to a public wall is built from source (stack PR 2), as the design's "Licensing" section says.
Non-blocking review findings are tracked in #1401.
…ugh GPU
The first piece of phones mode (docs/fleet/ARCHITECTURE.md, "Phones mode"): an
fcvm VM with one GPU runs an Android Emulator whose GPU rendering goes to that
GPU, checked by make phone-test on a g4dn.metal.
- rootfs-config.toml, kernel/phone-x86.conf: a phone.amd64 profile, the gpu
profile's kernel plus KVM (KVM_INTEL/AMD) and its NVIDIA driver table, pinned
to the Firecracker fork's agent/vfio-nested-state commit. That commit saves
and restores KVM's nested state (KVM_GET/SET_NESTED_STATE) in snapshots. Every
GPU VM is a restored clone, and Linux executes VMXON when kvm_intel loads, so
without it a restored guest's next VMX instruction faulted (kernel oops in
kvm_spurious_fault). The wall's gpu profile is unchanged.
- fleet/phone: the phone container (emulator from a mapped SDK, glvnd and
Vulkan ICD files for NVIDIA's libraries from CDI), phone.sh (boot with -gpu
host and gfxstream's EGL-on-EGL engine, so no X display; masks the SDK's
SwiftShader EGL for the container so the lookup reaches NVIDIA's), kvmprobe.c
(runs a two-instruction guest with KVM), and a GLES 3 probe app that logs its
renderer and frame rate.
- scripts/phone/sdk.sh fetches the pinned emulator 37.2.12, platform-tools,
build-tools, platform and AOSP Android 15 x86_64 image by SHA-256, refusing
without ACCEPT_ANDROID_SDK_LICENSE=1, and builds the probe app without Gradle.
scripts/phone/run.sh checks the VM was restored, KVM runs a VM in it, Android
boots, and SurfaceFlinger's and the app's renderers name the VM's GPU at 30
fps or more. make setup-phone and make phone-test drive them.
- NESTED.md: the x86 "restored VM has no usable VMX" note names the cause and
the phone profile's fix.
- ARCHITECTURE.md: the Phones mode design with the spike's numbers, the chosen
path, the snapshot flow, invariants, failure states, licensing and the stack.
Tested on a g4dn.metal (T4, driver 580.196.07):
make phone-test GPU=<addr> ACCEPT_ANDROID_SDK_LICENSE=1
ok the phone VM was restored from its snapshot
ok the VM has GPU 'Tesla T4'
ok KVM runs a VM inside the restored phone VM
ok Android booted with the host GPU: boot_completed_ms=31098
ok SurfaceFlinger: GLES: Google (NVIDIA Corporation), Android Emulator
OpenGL ES Translator (Tesla T4/PCIe/SSE2), OpenGL ES 3.1 (OpenGL ES 3.2
NVIDIA 580.196.07)
ok the app's GLES context: renderer=Android Emulator OpenGL ES Translator
(Tesla T4/PCIe/SSE2)
ok the app draws: lowest of its last 8 fps samples 59.8
The same run on the gpu profile's Firecracker commit (PHONE_PROFILE pointing
at a copy of the profile on that commit) fails "KVM in the restored VM" and
"Android did not boot".

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 12ea8
The new phone validation script can exit silently without a FAIL line if a status query or nvidia-smi call fails. This affects only the manual GPU-host test and is easy to fix. Merging is low risk, but the author should guard those assignments and tidy the documentation wording.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a phone guest profile in which an Android Emulator renders on the passed-through GPU. The objectives confirm this is the core of PR #1400, which adds an amd64 phone VM profile, the Firecracker pin, the fleet/phone and scripts/phone files, and the make targets. The title is specific and concise. It does not mention the docs, Makefile targets, or the Firecracker nested-state pin, which is acceptable because it does not need to cover every detail.

Two make phone-test runs (two GPUs, two worktrees) used the same default
SDK and work directories with no lock, so one could delete the download,
unpack directory, package or probe build the other was using. sdk.sh now
holds an flock on $SDK/.lock until it exits, and publishes probe.apk by
rename so run.sh never reads a half-written one.
scripts/phone/test-sdk-lock.sh starts two sdk.sh runs on one SDK with a stub
curl that counts how many are inside it at once. Without the lock:
FAIL: 2 sdk.sh runs were installing into one SDK at the same time
With it:
ok two sdk.sh runs on one SDK took turns (2 downloads, at most 1 at once)
make phone-test runs it first.
ARCHITECTURE.md: the T4's utilization while the probe app draws at 60 fps.
Stream zip members to disk instead of reading each one into memory.
dst.write(src.read()) loads the whole archive member into RAM. The Android system image archive holds multi-GB image files. On a host with limited memory, the extraction can hit the OOM killer. The failure leaves a partial $SDK/.unpack directory.
Use shutil.copyfileobj and add shutil to the import on Line 42.
Proposed fix
-import os, stat, sys, zipfile+import os, shutil, stat, sys, zipfile
...
with z.open(info) as src, open(path, "wb") as dst:
- dst.write(src.read())+ shutil.copyfileobj(src, dst)

Two sdk.sh runs on different SDK directories that sat side by side shared
$SDK/../phone-work under different locks, so one could delete the other's
probe build or keystore. The work directory is now $SDK/phone-work, inside
the directory the SDK lock covers; run.sh reads it from there.
scripts/phone/test-sdk-lock.sh gains a second case: two SDKs with every
package already installed run to the probe build, and a stub javac records
where each was asked to build. Before:
FAIL: two SDK directories built the probe app in one directory
After:
ok two SDK directories build the probe app in two directories
Review found a third case of one class: run A could install the probe app
run B had just built into the shared work directory, and a checkout with
other pins would replace an SDK package under a running VM. The design now
leaves nothing mutable to share:
- sdk.sh builds the probe app into a private directory and publishes it once,
by rename, as phone-work/probe-<hash of its sources>.apk, never replaced;
each build gets its own keystore. run.sh installs that exact file
(sdk.sh --probe-path), passed to phone.sh probe as an argument.
- The default SDK directory is /mnt/fcvm-btrfs/android-sdk/<hash of the
pins> (sdk.sh --sdk-path), so a package is installed once, under the SDK
lock, and never replaced.
scripts/phone/test-sdk-lock.sh gains two cases. Two checkouts with different
probe sources build in turn on one SDK; before:
FAIL: checkout A's probe app at .../phone-work/probe.apk was replaced by
another checkout's build
after:
ok a checkout's probe app stays its own when another checkout builds
And checkouts with the same pins share an SDK directory and other pins do
not; on the previous sdk.sh:
FAIL: two checkouts with the same pins use different SDK directories
Every run built and ran localhost/fcvm-phone, so a concurrent run from a
checkout with other fleet/phone sources could replace the tag between this
run's build and its VM resolving it, and test the other checkout's phone.sh
and kvmprobe. The tag is now localhost/fcvm-phone:<hash of fleet/phone>
(run.sh --image), so the same sources share an image and other sources never
replace it. With this, nothing a run uses is shared mutably: the VM name is
per process, logs are in mktemp, the SDK directory is keyed by its pins, the
probe app by its sources and the image by its sources.
scripts/phone/test-sdk-lock.sh gains the case; on the previous run.sh:
FAIL: run.sh --image names no tagged local image: ''
After:
ok checkouts with other phone containers use another image tag

DISAGREE: not blocking; tracked in #1401. The PR-level bodies answered here: CodeRabbit's review of 12ea81e lists its three inline findings, each answered in its thread (one fixed in 2446be9, two tracked in #1401), and a nitpick, streaming zip members to disk in sdk.sh instead of reading each into memory, which costs memory on a small host but not correctness, also tracked in #1401. Codex's review receipts carry no findings of their own: their four inline findings are answered RED-VERIFIED in their threads, and Codex reported no findings on the head, 997c008.
