nextjs-ct: every Claude Code in a container uses the pool, desktop SSH sessions too - #702
The Claude desktop app's SSH sessions start their own Claude Code inside the person's container (~/.claude/remote/ccd-cli/...), with the person's own login and no proxy. Only t-claude's launches go through claw-master connect, so those desktop sessions spent the person's own subscription, which the pool also spends. The app reported "You've hit your weekly limit · resets …" while the same person's terminal sessions worked.
This runs a claw-master agent in every enrolled container and points every Claude Code there at it, the same way claw-master agent install already does on the Macs.
What changes
scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/claw-master-agent-setup USER (new, runs as root in the container):
writes /etc/nextjs-ct/claw-master-agent.env (server, listen address) and starts claw-master-agent@USER;
writes the agent's HTTPS_PROXY, NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS and NO_PROXY (from claw-master agent env) to the managed settings drop-in /etc/claude-code/managed-settings.d/50-claw-master-agent.json. The file is written whole in one rename, only when its content changes, with mode 640 and the person's group, since it carries the agent's token.
Managed settings outrank user and project settings. The person's own ~/.claude/settings.json is never edited.
connect still works.claw-master connect validates drop-ins and accepts exactly these three entries. t-claude sessions keep connect's own forwarder, because connect sets the lowercase https_proxy, which Claude prefers.
Fails closed (no fallback):
A missing binary, bad agent env output or an agent that does not come up fails the run and keeps the drop-in, so Claude fails instead of using the person's login.
Ready means the unit's own MainPID owns the listener (ss -p), not just any listener on the port.
A certificate missing for a few seconds (a renewal's two renames) is waited out. One that stays missing means no agent and no drop-in.
Restart rule: the agent is restarted when client.pem is not the certificate it was started with. The sha256 is recorded in /run, taken before the start. --restart forces a restart, for a new build.
Runs are serialized with flock.
Lowercase proxy names are reported. A lowercase https_proxy/no_proxy (and similar) in the person's own settings would win over the drop-in, so the run reports it and fails.
claw-master-agent@.path: PathChanged on client.pem;
claw-master-agent@.timer: hourly;
claw-master-agent-setup@.service: the oneshot that both of them start.
provision enables the path unit and the timer and runs the setup for the container's account. It passes --restart when it has just installed a new claw-master build.
scripts/ssm/claw-master-cert-install.sh carries agent.token (a regular file, not a link) into the renewed directory. connect reads the token beside the certificate, and without it would refuse the drop-in and with it every launch.
AGENTS.md: a bullet describing the container agent.
Known limit
A lowercase https_proxy or no_proxy in a project's.claude/settings.json is not seen and would route around the agent. The drop-in cannot set the lowercase names, because connect accepts only the three uppercase entries. A user-level one is reported.
Testing
ClawMasterAgentTests in scripts/test-nextjs-ct-containers.py run the real script against a fake systemctl and claw-master, with a real ss and a real listening socket. They cover:
an enrolled account;
an unchanged second run;
a certificate with new content but an older mtime restarting the agent;
--restart;
runs started together;
a transient absence;
un-enrolment;
faults keeping the drop-in;
a listener that is not the unit's;
each lowercase spelling;
unit and provision wiring.
The fingerprint, lowercase and concurrency cases were each seen failing on the previous commit.
test_install_carries_the_agent_token_over in scripts/test-claw-master-cert-renew.py fails without the install change.
All 112 offline suites from lambda-tests.yml pass.
Live, in the owner's container on the nextjs box, by hand-installing these files and then removing them again:
plain claude -p (the desktop app's way) answered through the pool from the drop-in alone;
claw-master connect -- -p still launched with the drop-in present;
with the agent stopped, plain claude -p hung until the timeout instead of going direct;
a renewal-style directory swap restarted the agent through the path unit;
a second run restarted nothing.
The live run also found a race between provision's run and the timer's first run, now fixed with the lock.
Codex: reviewed origin/main..a474140 (six P2s, all fixed or redesigned in 883f356), a474140..883f356 (two P2s, fixed in 34833b6), and 883f356..34833b6 (no findings).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Claude Code traffic from enrolled accounts, including sessions launched from the desktop app, is routed through the managed connection.
Enrolled accounts receive managed proxy settings, with automatic agent setup and certificate-change restarts. Certificate status is also checked hourly.
Improvements
Proxy settings in a user’s settings file that may override the managed connection are reported during setup.
Renewed certificates retain a valid agent token; symbolic-link tokens are not carried over.
…H sessions too
The Claude desktop app's SSH sessions start their own Claude Code in the
container (~/.claude/remote/ccd-cli/...) with the person's own login and no
proxy. Only t-claude's launches went through `claw-master connect`, so the
desktop sessions spent the person's own subscription, which the pool also
spends, and the app reported "You've hit your weekly limit" while the
terminal worked.
- scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/claw-master-agent-setup: for an enrolled account
(client.pem readable), write /etc/nextjs-ct/claw-master-agent.env, start
claw-master-agent@USER, and merge the agent's HTTPS_PROXY,
NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS and NO_PROXY (from `claw-master agent env`) into
~/.claude/settings.json "env" as the account, in one rename and only when
the content changes. A settings file that is not a JSON object is left
alone; a lowercase proxy spelling Claude would prefer is reported. Not
enrolled: stop the agent and remove only those exact entries.
- units: claw-master-agent@.service (claw-master agent --listen
127.0.0.1:8445 --server ... --dir ~/.config/claude-master, Restart=always),
claw-master-agent@.path (PathChanged on client.pem) and
claw-master-agent-setup@.service (setup --restart), because the agent reads
its certificate once and enrolling or renewing swaps the directory.
- provision: enable the path unit and run the setup for the container's
account; pass --restart when it installed a new claw-master build.
- scripts/ssm/claw-master-cert-install.sh: carry agent.token (a regular
file, not a link) into the new directory, since connect accepts the
settings only with the token beside the certificate.
- AGENTS.md: a bullet on the container agent.
- Tests: ClawMasterAgentTests in test-nextjs-ct-containers.py run the setup
for real against fake systemctl and claw-master; the renewal test checks
the token is carried over (fails without the install change).
…ficate, one run at a time
Repairs from review of the first commit:
- claw-master-agent-setup writes the agent's HTTPS_PROXY, NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS
and NO_PROXY to /etc/claude-code/managed-settings.d/50-claw-master-agent.json
(whole file, one rename, mode 640 with the person's group) instead of
editing ~/.claude/settings.json: managed settings outrank user and project
settings, a concurrent save to the person's file can no longer be lost, and
a jq program can no longer empty it. connect validates drop-ins with the
same allowance.
- Enrolment is the certificate alone: a missing claw-master or bad
`agent env` output fails and keeps the drop-in. A certificate missing
for a few seconds (a renewal's two renames) is waited out, not taken as
un-enrolment.
- The agent is restarted when client.pem is newer than the running agent
(or with --restart), so the path unit and a new hourly
claw-master-agent@.timer can both run the setup; provision enables both.
- Ready means the unit's MainPID owns the listener on the port (ss -p), not
any listener.
- A flock serializes runs: enabling the timer starts one at once, which
raced provision's run on the environment file in a live test.
- Tests rewritten for the drop-in, with real `ss`, a concurrent-runs case
and the transient-absence case; AGENTS.md updated.
… lowercase proxy settings
- claw-master-agent-setup records the sha256 of client.pem the agent was
started with (/run/claw-master-agent@USER.pem.sha256, taken before the
start) and restarts the agent when the current certificate differs.
Whole-second mtimes missed a renewal replaced in the agent's start second
or staged before it and swapped in after.
- It reports (and fails on) https_proxy, http_proxy, HTTP_PROXY, all_proxy,
ALL_PROXY or no_proxy in the person's ~/.claude/settings.json env: Claude
prefers them over the drop-in's uppercase entries, which the drop-in
cannot override because connect accepts only those three. The file is
never edited.
- Tests: a certificate with new content and an older mtime restarts the
agent; each conflicting spelling is reported with the drop-in kept. Both
fail on the previous commit. AGENTS.md and the unit description updated.
The change adds per-account claw-master agent setup and systemd triggers for enrolled container accounts. Provisioning enables and configures the agent, certificate renewal preserves a regular agent token, and guidance describes proxy routing for Claude Code.
Changes: Per-account claw-master agent routing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Preserve agent token on certificate renewal scripts/ssm/claw-master-cert-install.sh, scripts/test-claw-master-cert-renew.py
Certificate installation copies an existing regular, non-symlink agent.token into the replacement directory. Tests check its contents and permissions, and confirm that a symlinked token is not carried over.
Configure the per-user agent AGENTS.md, scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/claw-master-agent-setup, scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/units/claw-master-agent-setup@.service, scripts/test-nextjs-ct-containers.py
The setup script checks enrollment, writes agent environment and managed proxy settings, handles service restarts, and verifies the listening process. Tests cover setup behavior, and guidance describes routing and certificate handling.
Trigger and provision the agent scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/units/claw-master-agent@.service, scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/units/claw-master-agent@.path, scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/units/claw-master-agent@.timer, scripts/nextjs-ct/ct/provision, scripts/test-nextjs-ct-containers.py
Systemd units run the per-account agent and trigger setup after certificate changes and hourly. Provisioning enables the units and runs setup, requesting a restart when the binary changes. Tests check unit configuration and provisioning wiring.

Merge Risk: High · previous review 34833
The certificate installer can be made to write through a symlink that the account controls, which is a privilege boundary issue and should be fixed before merge. A first-time setup failure can also leave an enrolled account using its own login instead of the pool, and an agent that is active but not listening is never restarted by later runs.

P2: Keep first enrollment from falling back to personal Claude credentials on setup failure.
At 34833b6, the missing-binary, invalid agent env, and failed systemctl start paths return before the first managed settings drop-in exists. An enrolled account with no previous drop-in therefore still launches desktop Claude directly. The existing fault test first completes a successful setup, so it covers retaining a drop-in but misses this first-install case.
Reproduced on the ARM dev box with the existing offline fakes: each of those three fresh-world failures returned nonzero with no drop-in. A narrow fix and fresh-install regression tests are being prepared before merge.
Fixed the first-install fallback in 92d042e8e378f88df0cf07019b74025312d1f86f.
Fresh enrolled accounts receive an atomic, mode-0640 blocking proxy drop-in before the client, environment generation, or service startup can fail. A working existing drop-in is preserved. Validated agent settings replace the blocking configuration during successful setup.
Independent high code and security review found no additional P1/P2 issues. Focused ARM validation passed 81 tests: 12 agent setup tests, 35 Next.js container configuration tests, and 34 certificate renewal tests. The new regression covers missing client, invalid environment, failed enable, and failed start on a fresh installation.
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Validate the proxy endpoint, not only the environment key names.
An agent env result with all three expected keys but HTTPS_PROXY=http://elsewhere:1 passes this check. Setup then publishes that proxy even if the local agent owns $LISTEN, so Claude Code does not use the verified listener. Reject output whose proxy, CA path, or loopback exemption differs from the values requested for this account. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The additional suggestion about validating every agent env value was checked against the installed client's pinned source, commit 93efbc3432. AgentEnvironment in internal/clawmaster/agent.go constructs the proxy URL from resolveAgent(opts), the CA path from the selected client identity directory, and the constant loopback exemption. The setup passes a fixed loopback listen address and that account's client directory to the absolute, checksum-pinned client. No remote response or externally supplied stdout becomes these values. The current three-key contract is sufficient for this trusted producer; accepting arbitrary output from a future replacement helper is not a demonstrated production input path.
The two confirmed runtime findings about certificate-copy privileges and the loaded-certificate marker are being fixed with regression coverage before merge.

Addressed the two remaining actionable review findings in 21c6764974aca6cd839c26230be323e51c12f4e4:
Publish the loaded-certificate marker only after the service's own PID is listening. A readiness failure removes a prior marker, so an active but unready service is restarted on retry. The regression covers failure, recovery, and a subsequent unchanged run.
Copy a preserved agent token as the destination account when the certificate installer runs as root. A preplaced destination symlink cannot borrow root's write access. The normal copy and protected-target failure are covered.
Independent high code and security review passed. ARM validation passed 35 renewal tests and 13 agent tests. A separate bounded test with real root/runuser and dummy temporary fixtures reproduced the old protected-file overwrite and verified that the fix leaves that root-owned file unchanged and returns token-copy-failed. No production service was restarted by these tests.

Resolved the test-file conflict with merged #703 in a9f0232856903cae4ec0898d960f7124289fadc5.
Both new test classes are preserved unchanged. The updater is byte-identical to merged main, and the pool and certificate-install production helpers are unchanged from reviewed 21c67649. The combined ARM run passed 112 tests: 77 container tests and 35 certificate renewal tests. Independent high review found no lost fix or new P1/P2 issue.

Deployed and verified. The two intended resources updated successfully; the initial full apply then detected a staging coordinator release published after the saved plan. A fresh full plan and apply reconciled that safely, and the full follow-up plan is empty at b28ba10. All five container agents own port 8445 with the expected private managed settings. Plain Claude requests as Colton and Connor both returned OK, with each test process observed connecting to its own agent on 8445. Host boot ID, container leaders, and all baseline Claude processes were preserved. No existing session was restarted.
