Heads up from dgraph-io/dgraph#9747: the server now frames every abort as
|
No behaviour change is needed - no category was added or renamed, and the
prefix parser already handles every message the server now sends. But three
fixtures quoted text no server emits anymore, and the STALE_STARTTS javadoc
described one of its two causes.
Fixtures now hold the verbatim server strings, declared as constants so the
wire format is recorded in one place:
- the conflict detail gained an explanation of which key kinds could have
collided, and now contains a colon of its own after the category prefix
- stale-startts no longer claims "a leader change"; Zero also raises its
startTxnTs floor when trimming the conflict map at a snapshot, which is not
a leader change, so the message names both and so does the javadoc
- new: aborts the server declines to categorize, sending the detail with no
prefix rather than implying a wrong remedy
Adds coverage for two ways that could go wrong. Both the conflict and the
completed-move messages carry embedded colons, so only the first may delimit
the category. And the out-of-band abort opens with the exact sentence a
pre-feature server sent for every abort - a false CONFLICT there would tell a
caller to retry something that cannot succeed.
AbortReasonTest 15/15 pass on JDK 25 via standalone Gradle 9.1.0. The other
suites fail in beforeClass ("Unable to perform the DropAll operation") for
want of a running cluster, unrelated to this change.

ConnectionException from client.alter, shut down the channel, and skip the test

Skip only when the cluster is unreachable.
before() calls client.alter(...setDropAll(true)...) without a guard. When no cluster is reachable, the gRPC call fails with UNAVAILABLE. Exceptions.translate maps that status to ConnectionException, so the failure escapes before() as a class configuration failure. The class-level Javadoc says tests are skipped when infrastructure is missing, but before() does not follow that rule.
Catching RuntimeException would skip every failure from alter. DgraphException extends StatusRuntimeException, so authentication, permission, and server-side DropAll errors from a reachable cluster would also become skips. The integration cluster runs with ACL enabled, and the shared fixture logs in as groot before DropAll. A reachable cluster that rejects an unauthenticated DropAll would therefore be reported as skipped. Catch only the unreachable-cluster type.

Authenticate or gate the default-port setup before DropAll.
With TEST_GRPC_PORT unset, before() connects to localhost:9180. docker-compose.test.yml publishes alpha1 on that port with --acl enabled. The DropAll call is not authenticated and is not wrapped, so an exception from it escapes @BeforeClass. TestNG then reports a configuration failure, and the class does not run its abort-reason tests. The shared fixture logs in as groot before its own DropAll for this reason.
Do not add an unconditional login("groot", "password"). The documented abort-reason workflow runs this class against docker-compose.abort-reason.yml, which has no --acl. Authenticate only when the target cluster enforces ACL, or make the destructive DropAll an explicit opt-in. Because the default endpoint is the shared integration cluster, a login-only change would also make every default run wipe that cluster's data.

Problem
When Dgraph aborts a transaction, the Java client collapses every cause into a single
opaque exception:
TxnConflictExceptionexposes no way to tell why the transaction aborted, so anapplication cannot distinguish the cases that warrant different responses:
temporarily blocked, so back off and retry once the move completes;
change); retry with a fresh transaction.
The server now reports the category (see the companion
dgraphPR), encoding it as a"<code>: <detail>"prefix on the gRPCABORTEDstatus description. Without clientsupport, that information is only visible by string-scraping
getMessage().Example
Before, every abort looked the same — there was no way to branch on the cause:
Now the category is available via
getReason(), so callers can respond appropriately:Fix
PreReq: dgraph-io/dgraph#9747
Expose the category as a typed value on
TxnConflictException, parsed from the statusdescription the server already sends.
AbortReasonenum —CONFLICT,PREDICATE_MOVE,STALE_STARTTS,UNKNOWN.TxnConflictException.getReason()— parses the"<code>: <detail>"prefix off thegRPC status and maps it to an
AbortReason. The full human-readable teavailable via
getMessage().Backward compatible by design:
getReason()returnsUNKNOWN, so callers degrade gracefully.getMessage()is unchanged,isRetryable()still returnstrue, and the exceptiontype/hierarchy is unchanged — existing
catchblocks and retry loops are unaffected.Tests
AbortReasonTest— unit tests feeding synthetic gRPCABORTEDstaExceptions.translate, asserting each category parses correctly and that an absent orprefix-less description degrades to
UNKNOWN.AbortReasonLiveTest— cross-language end-to-end test that drives a real(locally patched) Dgraph cluster, forces each abort category, and asserts it propagates
all the way to
getReason(). Skips gracefully when the cluster prerequisites(multi-group for predicate-move, a Zero-restart hook for stale-startts)
configured. A
docker-compose.abort-reason.ymlis included to stand up that cluster.Future work
This change surfaces the category only — the slice the server provide
server enriches aborts with the contended predicate and UID/token (planned
dgraphfollow-up via the gRPC rich-error model, then a first-class
TxnContextfield), thisclient can add typed accessors such as
getConflictPredicates()andgetConflicts()without breaking the
getReason()surface introduced here. A later phase may also expandAbortReason(e.g. splitting non-movepredicate-movecases intoPREDICATE_UNAVAILABLE/
INTERNAL) and revisitisRetryable()for the non-retryable internalcodes already map to
UNKNOWN, so adding values stays backward compatible.Checklist
