CI sets up OCaml with ml-in-barcelona/gh-ci-action@v1.0.0, which caches the opam switch on Linux, macOS and Windows, and caches the dune build cache with its dune-cache/load and dune-cache/save actions.

  • This replaces the hand-written opam cache, the cached-environment step, and the make pin / make install steps, including the Windows retry loops.
  • A new make pin-list target prints the pins once; make pin and CI both read it.
  • The install flags are the same as make install (--with-test --with-doc --with-dev-setup).

The Windows install no longer retries three times; opam still retries downloads (OPAMRETRIES=10).

Risk: two-way door. A revert restores the previous setup steps.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated continuous integration to use centralized dependency pinning and caching.
    • Enabled documentation and development environment setup in CI.
    • Added a Makefile target to list pinned dependencies.
    • Updated dependency pinning to process the shared pin list consistently and stop on errors.

📝 Walkthrough

The Makefile now provides a dependency pin list that the CI workflow passes to an OCaml setup action. The workflow also uses the action to load and save the Dune cache, replacing the previous OPAM setup and cache steps.

Changes: CI dependency setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and apply dependency pins
Makefile
The new pin-list target emits three dependency names with their shared pinned repository URL. The pin target reads the list and runs opam pin add for each entry, stopping on failure.
Use the pin list in CI
.github/workflows/ci.yml
The workflow passes generated pins to ml-in-barcelona/gh-ci-action@v1.0.0, with compiler, documentation, and development setup options. It loads and saves the Dune cache through the action and removes the prior OPAM cache setup and save steps.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cd6d6

The CI change is mergeable with bounded security risk, but pinning the action to its reviewed commit would prevent a retargeted release tag from changing code that runs before publishing and deployment.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pin ml-in-barcelona/gh-ci-action to a full commit SHA.

The new steps use the third-party action through the mutable tag @v1.0.0. The repository owner can move this tag to other code. An attacker who takes over the owner's account can also move it.

These steps run in the same build job as steps that receive CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN, NODE_AUTH_TOKEN, GH_TOKEN, and GITHUB_TOKEN. Code from the action can change the runner state that those later steps use. For example, it can change the PATH, the opam switch binaries, or the npm config.

GitHub's hardening guidance says that a full-length commit SHA is currently the only way to use an action as an immutable release.

Resolve the commit for the reviewed v1.0.0 release. Use that SHA in all three uses: lines. Keep the tag as a trailing comment.

Based on learnings: "reference third-party actions by pinning to a full commit SHA … rather than a mutable tag or branch (e.g., @v1, @main)."

Also applies to: 72-72, 85-85
