Summary

Fix makeReducer so that an event with no matching reducer throws the
descriptive error it was designed to throw, instead of a generic TypeError.

Motivation

In core/src/activity-utils/makeReducer.ts, the reducer lookup called
.bind() on reducerMap[event.name] before checking whether it existed:

const reducer = (reducerMap[event.name] as Reducer<T>).bind(reducerMap);
if (reducer) {
  return reducer(target, event);
}
throw new Error(`No reducer for event ${JSON.stringify(event)}`);

If reducerMap[event.name] is undefined, calling .bind() on it throws a TypeError immediately, so the if (reducer) check and the custom "No reducer for event" error below it can never be reached.
The intended error-handling branch was dead code.

What I have done

  • Reordered the logic in makeReducer to check for the reducer's existence before binding it, so the descriptive error actually fires when an event has no matching reducer.
  • Added core/src/activity-utils/makeReducer.spec.ts covering both the happy path (registered event dispatches to its reducer) and the error path (unregistered event throws the expected message).

Test Plans

  • Added unit tests for makeReducer exercising both branches.
  • Ran the full core test suite and tsc

Test Results

  • yarn jest (core): 16 suites / 89 tests passed.

makeReducer bound reducerMap[event.name] before checking it existed,
so a missing reducer threw a generic TypeError from .bind() instead
of the descriptive "No reducer for event" error. Check for the
reducer first, then bind.
StepPopped mutated activity.steps in place via Array#pop, unlike
every other reducer in this file which derives a new array. Build
the popped steps as a new array instead so callers that still hold
a reference to the previous activity aren't affected.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Popping an activity step now preserves the original activity, returns the remaining steps, and restores parameters from the previous step when available.
    • Unregistered events now produce a clear error, including events whose names match inherited object properties.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for activity step popping, registered event reducers, and unregistered events.

StepPopped now shortens the steps array without modifying the original activity. makeReducer now checks that an event name is an own property of the reducer map before calling its reducer. Tests cover both changes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: makeReducer now throws its intended "No reducer" error when no reducer matches an event. The raw summary confirms the change to makeReducer.ts that checks the reducer before binding it. The title is specific and accurate.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the bug, which is that .bind() runs before the existence check, so the descriptive error never fires. It lists the code change and the new spec file, and it gives test results. The file summaries match these claims. The description is on-topic and specific.

Comment thread core/src/activity-utils/makeReducer.ts Resolved
makeReducer looked up reducerMap[event.name] directly, so an event
named after an Object.prototype member (e.g. "toString") resolved to
the inherited method instead of throwing "No reducer for event".
Check for an own property with Object.hasOwn before binding.
Add a case asserting that an event named "toString" throws the
"No reducer for event" error rather than dispatching to
Object.prototype.toString.

Nitpick Assert that the registered handler receives the dispatched event.

6-6: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert that the registered handler receives the dispatched event.

The registered-event test uses Initialized: (state) => state + 1 and asserts only the return value. The handler ignores its event argument, so the test does not check that makeReducer forwards event. If the forwarding were removed, the handler would still return 1 and the test would still pass. Production reducers read fields from the event argument, so a regression here would break real behavior. The current code forwards the event correctly, so this is a coverage gap and not a current failure. A spy on the handler closes the gap:

Update the registered-event test in makeReducer.spec.ts to verify event
forwarding: replace the Initialized handler with a spy and assert it receives
the initial state and dispatched event. Preserve the existing reducer
return-value assertion.
