Summary

Fixes #409. With excludeToolMessages: true, the persisted approval response is filtered out before continuation detection, so approved tools never execute.

Restore only a successful approval response in the requested thread when no prompt override is supplied, together with its complete message order. Recovery pages the existing query until that order is complete, with at most 1,000 messages per page; later same-order messages cannot displace the target exchange. Ordinary history filtering/completion limits and existing approval validation remain unchanged.

Evidence

  • Before: the native public approveToolCall → generateText regression fails with exclusion enabled: expected [] to deeply equal ['a']. Orders exceeding the prior completion window also fail with an empty prompt, both before and after the targeted decision.
After: all 509 tests across 41 files pass, including 71 approval tests. The long-order cases preserve executed results without re-execution and exclude newer approved requests; denied/unanswered, history, input-tampering, thread/order and prompt-override controls also pass.
  • Passed package build, typecheck, lint, full native tests, playground build, and formatting/whitespace checks.
  • build:clean codegen requires an unavailable CONVEX_DEPLOYMENT. The regular package build used by CI passes against unchanged checked-in generated sources. No schema, generated files, manifests, or lockfiles changed.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Blast Radius: context

Only explicit approval continuation with tool exclusion uses order recovery. Its cost grows with the continued order; each query remains bounded, and earlier-order rows are discarded. Uses AI-assisted implementation and native local tests with mock providers; no paid-provider calls.

📝 Walkthrough

When tool messages are excluded and a continuation targets a successful tool message with an approval response, fetchContextWithPrompt paginates backward to recover the target’s complete message order. It sorts the recovered messages, filters orphaned tool messages, and replaces that order in recent context. Tests cover approved tool execution, message ordering, validation, and cases where approval context is not restored.

Explanation

Issue #409 requires approved-tool continuation when excludeToolMessages: true and the returned promptMessageId continues generation. The PR summary reports recovery of the successful approval response and its complete message order in the requested thread when no prompt override is supplied. The tests cover execution, ordering, validation, thread boundaries, and prompt overrides. The reported native regression and full test suite pass.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported source change adds recovery only to the approval continuation path with excluded tool messages. The reported test changes support this behavior and its boundary cases. No unrelated source, schema, generated file, manifest, or lockfile changes are reported.

I don't like that we're papering over a more fundamental issue with additional query calls. The more fundamental issue being that "exclude tool calls" and "continue generation on an order with tool calls" are kind of incompatible desires. My guess is that the "exclude tool calls" feature is mostly about reducing context bloat for previous turns, but that the promptMessageId order should always return all tool calls, unless it's "finished" (ends with a non-tool-call agent message). wdyt @robelest ?

That makes sense. The current patch leaves the policy split: the normal recent-history query excludes tool messages, then the client reads the exact target to identify an approval response and pages that order back in. The paging handles orders beyond the existing bounded history-completion window; it does not establish whether the turn is finished.

I agree that preserving tool exchanges for an unfinished prompt order is the better direction to settle first. One boundary to retain is that promptMessageId currently bounds retrieval by order, so later steps in that same order are included; completion would need to consider the order's tail, not just the named message.

I'll hold off on a rewrite while you and @robelest align, including how this should fit with #416. Once that rule is agreed, I can revise the retrieval behavior and regression coverage around it.

Agreed, I went with that in #427: with excludeToolMessages, the promptMessageId's order keeps its tool messages as one more index range in the same query, and earlier orders stay filtered. I skipped the "unless it's finished" part, since a finished order only costs a bit of extra context, and checking would mean reading the order's tail.

Thanks @as992949791 for the repro, it pinned this down.

Thanks for the follow-up and for confirming the alternative in #427. That approach addresses #409 without the extra query pagination in this PR. The long-history completion-window limitation is tracked separately in #433, so I’ll close #420 to avoid maintaining a duplicate solution.

…ToolMessages (#427)

Fixes #409. With `excludeToolMessages`, the order being continued lost its tool call and approval decision, so approved tools never ran. `listMessagesByThreadId` now also returns tool messages for the `upToAndIncludingMessageId` order, as one more index range in the same merged stream; earlier orders stay filtered and `cloneThread` keeps strict exclusion. Alternative to #420 without extra queries.

Known limit, filed as #433: a continued order longer than the 1,000-message completion window is still trimmed from context, for every caller.
