  • Dev default model: gpt-6-luna (OpenAI shuts gpt-4.1-nano down on 23 Oct 2026). Production stays on gpt-4.1-mini (no shutdown date).
  • OPENAI_REASONING_EFFORT: one central setting — a level, empty for none sent, or unset for the default model's own; validated at start; sent by both chat calls only when configured.
  • gpt-6-luna defaults to none: verified against the API, Chat Completions + function tools refuses every other effort (and refuses nothing sent, which defaults to medium). A real turn through run_turn with the dev defaults used the CV tools and answered correctly.
  • Eval report records the effort. Version 0.11.2 + CHANGES entry.

Testing

  • Backend: 230 passed, mypy clean

- The dev default model is gpt-6-luna; OpenAI shuts gpt-4.1-nano down on
23 October 2026. Production stays on gpt-4.1-mini, which has no shutdown
  date.
- OPENAI_REASONING_EFFORT (Settings.openai_reasoning_effort) is the one place
the reasoning effort is set: a level, empty for none sent, or unset for the
default model's own. Validated at start. Sent by both chat calls in a turn
only when configured, since a model that does not reason rejects it.
- gpt-6-luna's default is "none": measured against the API, Chat Completions
with function tools refuses every other effort, and refuses nothing sent
(its default is "medium"). Thinking harder needs the Responses API.
- The eval report records the effort beside the model.
