Summary

  • The check-cadence shadow now reads each show's release pattern (daily, weekly, or a regular gap) and reports how many new episodes landed on schedule, where timing checks would find them within the hour, and how many hours after release the current checks found them.

Motivation

  • Pace-based intervals check a weekly show about every 42 hours, so its episodes are found many hours late. Most regular shows drop at the same weekday and time, so a check right after the expected drop would find them almost at once.
  • Bonus and off-schedule episodes must never be missed: timing checks would only add checks on top of each show's usual ones. The shadow measures how much each part matters before anything changes.

What changed

  • lib/cadence.js:
    • arrivalPattern(dates): from the newest 10 dated episodes, daily (most within an hour of the same time of day, about a day apart), weekly (most within two hours of the same weekday and time), gap (most gaps within 10% of the typical gap), else irregular. Under 4 dates is irregular. A few bonus episodes don't break a pattern.
    • onSchedule: daily ±1.5 h, weekly ±3 h, gap ±max(6 h, 10%) of the nearest expected drop.
    • timingTally and timingSummary: the report part.
  • 03-sync-episodes.js: for each new episode (isNewEpisode), the pattern is read from the dates known before it, and the episode is tallied with how long after release this run found it.
  • Tests: patterns with and without bonus episodes, on- and off-schedule arrivals, the report wording. scripts/README.md describes it.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Report only: checks still follow today's tiers.
  • Read-only rehearsal on the episode book: of 7,301 shows with an episode in the last 3 days, 1,590 had a daily pattern, 1,944 weekly, 527 a regular gap and 3,240 none. The newest episode was on schedule for 3,479 (48% of all, 86% of the patterned shows); 340 weekly shows' newest episode was off schedule.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cadence reports now classify newly detected episodes against daily, weekly, and recurring-gap release patterns.
    • Reports distinguish on-schedule and off-schedule arrivals and include publication-to-detection delays, including median lag summaries when timing data is available.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the cadence description to explain the new arrival-pattern and timing details.

The sync process now derives release patterns from known episode dates, classifies new episodes as scheduled or off-schedule, and records publication-to-detection lag. The cadence summary reports schedule counts, pattern totals, and median lags. Existing cadence checks remain in place.

Changes: Episode timing reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release pattern and schedule detection
scripts/sync/lib/cadence.js, scripts/sync/lib/cadence.test.js
Cadence helpers classify daily, weekly, recurring-gap, and irregular patterns, then test whether an arrival matches a pattern. Tests cover classification and schedule matching.
Timing capture for new episodes
scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js
The sync process records the prior release pattern, schedule match, and publication lag for newly detected episodes. It passes a tally of those entries to the cadence summary.
Timing tally and cadence report
scripts/sync/lib/cadence.js, scripts/sync/lib/cadence.test.js, scripts/README.md
The summary adds schedule counts, pattern totals, and median lags when timing data is present. Tests cover tally and report output. The README describes the reporting.

The report can omit feed-only discoveries and misclassify a regular release after a bonus episode. Correct these counts before relying on the new timing report.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 80.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 10 functions across 3 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only scripts/README.md and Node sync code under scripts/sync/; it changes no Android feature, core, Gradle, composition-root, or storage-contract files. The added code imports only the existing local ./cadence module and adds in-memory timing tallies. The patch introduces no feature-to-feature dependency, PostHog usage, Hilt/Koin/Dagger/MockK, second PlaybackRepository or AppContainer, catalog/designsystem or catalog/playback dependency, or identity/storage migration issue described by ARCHITECTURE.md.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The PR changes only scripts README/JavaScript/test files. It changes no production Kotlin under app/src/main/, core//src/main/, or feature//src/main/. The module README requirement is therefore not triggered.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

Two newly generated findings remain outstanding: one Major finding in scripts/sync/lib/cadence.js and one Minor finding in scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js. No CodeRabbit discussion threads were returned, but these findings are not marked resolved or explicitly dismissed with rationale.

Resolution

Fix both findings and rerun the review. Mark each finding resolved after verification, or explicitly dismiss each one with a short rationale before merge.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR adds production logic in scripts/sync/lib/cadence.js and integrates it into scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js. The PR adds only Node tests in scripts/sync/lib/cadence.test.js; it adds no tests under any src/test path and no Java/Kotlin tests. Therefore the changed logic lacks the required hermetic JVM unit tests.

Resolution

Add or extend hermetic JVM unit tests under the applicable src/test source set. Cover arrival-pattern detection, schedule classification, timing tally/report output, and relevant empty/error cases.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Account for R5 discoveries in the timing report.

When R5 finds a newer feed tip, the loop at Lines 371–375 adds its show to newTipIds but adds no entry to timing. This summary can therefore count that discovery in the cadence comparison while excluding it from “new episodes” timing totals. Include R5 discoveries in the tally, or label the timing totals as Podcast Index-only.

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Anchor gap schedules to regular releases, not the newest episode.

If a fortnightly show publishes a bonus episode three days after its regular release, arrivalPattern can still return gap: 14 days. The next regular release is then 11 days after prevNewestS. This code expects it 14 days after the bonus and reports the regular release as off schedule. Retain a schedule anchor from the dates that fit the gap pattern, and test a regular release after a bonus episode.
