Summary

  • Stages 3 and 4 stop at a per-run deadline set by the VPS runner and leave the rest for the next run, so hourly runs stay short and even.
  • Both stages write one line of counts and timings for the runner's usage log.

Motivation

  • The sync moves from five runs a day to hourly runs, capped at half the server's time: a 30-minute budget per hourly run. Today a run stops only at its count budgets (10,000 checks, 10,000 embeddings), so a backlog makes one long run followed by short ones.
  • The hourly trial needs a record of how long each run held the server, how much it did, and whether it ran over.

What changed

  • lib/run-budget.js: reads SYNC_STAGE3_DEADLINE_AT and SYNC_DEADLINE_AT (epoch seconds; unset or malformed means no limit), timeUp, and recordMetrics, which appends a JSON line to SYNC_METRICS_FILE.
  • 03-sync-episodes.js: stops starting batches at the earlier of the two deadlines. Shows not reached stay due (oldest first next run), and the report says how many wait. Metrics: due, checked, new tips, errors, left for the next run, timed out, duration.
  • 04-vectorize-episodes.js: stops starting shows at the run deadline (same point as the embedding budget) and says so in the report. Metrics: shows, embedded, stored, backlog, errors, timed out, duration.
  • Tests: lib/run-budget.test.js. scripts/README.md describes the module.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Without the environment variables (manual runs, CI) nothing changes. The runner change that sets them lives in netcup-panel.

Added

  • Catalog sync: stages 3 and 4 respect a per-run time budget from the runner and record their counts and timings for its usage log.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Sync runs now respect configurable stage-specific and overall time limits. When a limit is reached, processing stops before starting additional work, and the remaining work can be handled in a later run.
    • Run summaries indicate when a time limit was reached and show how much work remains.
  • Documentation

    • Added information about time limits and how they affect sync runs.

The sync scripts now use configurable deadlines for stages 3 and 4. When a deadline passes, they stop starting work and report remaining work. The scripts also record stage metrics in JSON lines when a metrics file is configured.

Changes: Sync run budget

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deadline and metrics utilities
scripts/sync/lib/run-budget.js, scripts/sync/lib/run-budget.test.js, scripts/package.json, scripts/README.md
Adds helpers to parse and select deadlines, check whether a deadline has passed, and append metrics. Tests cover these helpers. The sync test command includes the new tests, and the README documents the utilities.
Stage 3 deadline handling
scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js
Stage 3 checks its deadline before each batch. When time is up, it reports unstarted checks and records run metrics.
Stage 4 deadline handling
scripts/sync/04-vectorize-episodes.js
Stage 4 checks its deadline before each show. When time is up, it flushes progress, reports remaining shows, and records run metrics.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 6b6e2

The new time budget for catalog sync stage 3 can still be overrun by the stale-tip pass. A short run where every attempted check fails can also report success to the runner. Stage 4 skips its metrics line when there is nothing to process. These are worth fixing before relying on the budget, but runs without the new settings behave as before.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

No architecture violation is introduced. The PR changes only scripts/ sync code and documentation. Its imports are local sync libraries or Node built-ins; it adds no feature-to-feature, PostHog, Hilt/Koin/Dagger/MockK, PlaybackRepository, or AppContainer dependency. It does not change Android module boundaries or identity/storage contracts, so no migration is required.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The PR changes only scripts files: JavaScript, package metadata, tests, and scripts/README.md. The authoritative diff contains no Kotlin files under app/src/main/, core/<module>/src/main/, or feature/<module>/src/main/. Therefore the module README requirement does not apply.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR changes only JavaScript sync scripts and adds a Node test at scripts/sync/lib/run-budget.test.js. It does not add or substantially change JVM production logic such as engines, repositories, ViewModels, or logic helpers. The src/test JVM-test requirement is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

Three newly generated CodeRabbit findings remain outstanding. They are not fixed or explicitly dismissed: one Minor finding concerns missing metrics when the stage 4 queue is empty, and two Major findings concern the stage 3 failure threshold and stale-tip deadline handling. No posted review threads were returned, but these findings do not have resolved status.

Resolution

Fix all three findings, then mark each review thread resolved. Alternatively, explicitly dismiss each finding with a short rationale before merge.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 55.56% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 9 functions across 4 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Review comments at @scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js:
- Line 261: Update the failure-threshold calculation in the batch loop to use
the number of checks actually attempted rather than the full `due.length`, so
early deadline stops still report a failed short run when failures exceed half
of the attempted checks.
- Around line 260-264: Update the R5 pass in staleTips.runStaleTips to check the
stage 3 deadline before each chunk request and stop when it is reached; pass a
predicate based on runBudget.timeUp(deadline) from the call in the stage 3 flow.
Keep passing the full due list so unchecked shows remain eligible for R5.

Review comments at @scripts/sync/04-vectorize-episodes.js:
- Line 650: Update main so runBudget.recordMetrics records zero-count metrics
when drainOrder is empty before the early return, ensuring the empty-queue path
writes a metrics line while preserving the existing metrics behavior for
non-empty queues.
