Merges upstream main through 5171a6aa (three fixes: colbymchenry#2492, colbymchenry#2493, colbymchenry#2501) into fork/consolidated. Until this lands, the hourly deploy timer holds back because upstream is ahead, and the deployed build stays at 4d15b680.

What changed

Differences from upstream tests

Three assertions in cpp-declared-type-receiver.test.ts are changed, each with a comment: a template-parameter receiver stays unlinked, a known class without the method gets no name-only fallback, and rocksdb::Step still reads an earlier function's local through the older text scan (fixing that cost about 115 correct rocksdb links). One regression test is added to each of the two C++ test files.

Evidence

Corpus Call links before After Change
json 13,285 13,382 97 gained, none lost
jq unchanged unchanged no change
leveldb (shallow clone) 5,984 5,984 no change
rocksdb (shallow clone) 171,786 172,388 607 gained, 5 lost

The 5 lost rocksdb links were wrong before (name-only matches); 30 of the gained links were checked against source and were correct. Full suite: 694 files, 8878 passed, 39 skipped, no worker crash lines. Kernel tests 67 passed. Golden dumps unchanged. Precision: json 11/11 absent held and 7/7 present held; jq has no cases. The gtest example in the CHANGELOG fork note is reasoned from the code path, not measured.

README

Checked: upstream merge point (line 55, changed to 5171a6aa), Name resolution row, C++ alias and smart-pointer bullets, features table, measured-results tables, precision row. Only line 55 needed a change.

Summary by cubic

Merges upstream main through 5171a6aa into fork/consolidated, unblocking the hourly deploy timer that upstream has been holding back since 4d15b680. It takes three upstream fixes: C++ range-for-over-auto element typing (colbymchenry#2492), declared-type receiver lookup (colbymchenry#2493), and the Python import-alias sync retry (colbymchenry#2501).

Ported fixes

Tests, corpus, and docs

  • Three upstream assertions in cpp-declared-type-receiver.test.ts are adapted to the fork's policy: template-parameter receivers stay unlinked, known classes without the method get no fallback, and rocksdb::Step keeps reading an earlier local; one regression test is added per C++ file.
  • Corpus: json +97 links, rocksdb +607 gained with 5 lost (all wrong before), jq and leveldb unchanged; README's merge-point line is the only doc change besides the CHANGELOG entries.

Written for commit 7dc9fdf. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • C++ calls on range-loop elements now resolve more accurately across supported containers, project-defined iterators, and smart-pointer elements.
    • Calls on declared C++ class types now resolve using the class visible at the call site and its base classes, including types brought into scope with using declarations.
    • Python import aliases are linked when imported modules or names become available after the importing file has been indexed, including when a module is added or restored.

… type of its range (colbymchenry#2492)

colbymchenry#2439 typed a range-for variable when the loop names its type. A loop
over `auto` elements names none, so receiver inference kept scanning as
for an `auto` local with an unreadable initializer: it reached an earlier
declaration of the same name, often another variable's, or fell through
to the guess by the receiver's name. facebook/rocksdb's db_impl_write.cc
loops `for (auto cfd : cfds)` over a `const autovector<ColumnFamilyData*>&`.

The loop's range is now read from its header and typed as written,
template arguments and all, since the index keeps only a return type's
last name:
- a name the calling function declares, or a data member of its class
  read from the class's own lines (`versions_` from db_impl_write.cc);
- an `auto` local's initializer;
- `*x`, `x.m`, `x->m`, `this`, and calls whose declaration writes their
  return type, free or on the object's class (own or inherited);
- aliases followed with their template arguments (cppAliasedTypeWritten);
- the element: a standard or abseil sequence container's first template
  argument, protobuf's RepeatedPtrField and rocksdb's autovector's, or what
  a project class's begin() returns, dereferenced (ColumnFamilySet's
  iterator's operator* gives ColumnFamilyData*). Nullability annotations
  are dropped.

The element goes through the same declaration record as any declared
receiver, so the typed path, colbymchenry#2413's gate for a standard-library element
and colbymchenry#2440's held-type lookup for `->` on a smart-pointer element apply
unchanged. Classes are looked up with colbymchenry#2440's cppClassWritten, methods
through its cppMethodOf, and matchCppHeldTypeCall now reads its held type
through the shared cppStdHeldType.

A/B on main 8a5ba3d, site-keyed: leveldb identical; fmt +1 / 3
retargeted; rocksdb -68 / +173 / 104 retargeted / 231 confidence only;
protobuf -13 / +25 / 7 / 59. Every removal and retarget was a wrong
guess; 4 of rocksdb's additions reach MemTableRep::Iterator through the
typed path's last-name lookup, as a declared `Iterator* it` does on main.

…e class its type names, not a namesake (colbymchenry#2493)

Receiver typing resolved a C++ call on a variable, parameter or member by
the declared type's last name: `Iterator* iter; iter->Valid()` became
resolveMethodOnType('Iterator', 'Valid'), which takes any class named
`Iterator` that declares `Valid`. facebook/rocksdb has 22 such classes,
and the `Iterator` the code means inherits `Valid`, `Next` and `key` from
`IteratorBase`, so nested namesakes like `MemTableRep::Iterator` took the
calls (google/leveldb's went to `SkipList::Iterator`).

A declaration the calling function or its class writes, called with the
operator it takes (`->` on a pointer, `.` on a value or reference), now
goes through the same C++ lookup colbymchenry#2440 uses for smart pointers'
held types (cppClassWritten from the caller's scopes, then the file's
`using`s, aliases followed) and cppMethodOf (the class's own method, else
one through its own base edges):

- An alias colbymchenry#2399 followed from the caller (function-local typedefs
  included) is the class it names, by qualified name. An `auto` loop's
  element type (colbymchenry#2492) is looked up where its range's type is written.
- A class found only as the one class of that name the file can see, a
  template parameter's type, a library type, or a type nothing visible
  declares: the call goes on as before.
- A class with no such method gets no edge, unless it is a class template
  or a base on the way is one the index doesn't link (a `decltype(…)`
  base, an alias each `#if` arm declares differently), which may declare
  it: then as before.
- Declarations read from elsewhere, or past one the scan couldn't read,
  are unchanged.

cppClassWritten now tries the file's `using`s before the global scope:
protobuf's upb generator writes `using google::protobuf::Descriptor;`
inside its namespace, and the PHP extension declares a global C struct
`Descriptor` in a header.

…ears later (colbymchenry#2501)

`from .models import User as UserModel` and `from . import helpers as h`
bind a name their module declares under another: `User`, `helpers`. Every
reference through the alias (the import, a call, a base class, the class
or function passed as a value) was parked under the alias, which no file
a sync adds or changes carries. So a module added after its importers were
indexed, restored after a delete, or given the name in a later edit never
relinked them, while a fresh index did. colbymchenry#2450 fixed the same gap for ES
modules.

Such a reference is now parked under its module's key. A Python import
names its module by a dotted path, counted from the importing file's own
package when it starts with dots: `.models` in app/main.py is
'module:models', `.` is 'module:app', `..pkg` the package above's
'module:pkg'. colbymchenry#2450's lookup still finds it by its own name, which is how
a fresh index links an alias its module never declares. A package's
`__init__.py` also carries the key of the package above it, as a module
file beside it does through its folder, so `from app.pkg import sub as s`
relinks when the subpackage appears.

…for and declared-type receivers

Ports upstream's C++ auto range-for element typing (colbymchenry#2492) and declared-type receiver lookup (colbymchenry#2493) into the native resolver, and takes the Python import-alias sync retry (colbymchenry#2501). The deleted TypeScript resolver files stay deleted.

Three upstream assertions that expect a name-based guess are adapted to the fork's no-guess policy: a call on a template-parameter-typed receiver stays unlinked, a known class without the method gets no namesake fallback, and the text scan's existing earlier-function local read is unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The native C++ resolver now infers receiver types from range-loop elements and resolves calls on declared classes. Python import binding tails now support retries when imported modules change. The changelog records these changes, and the README updates the upstream baseline commit.

Changes

C++ Receiver Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Infer range-loop element types

The resolver derives element types from supported containers, project iterators, aliases, declarations, and expressions. Tests cover inferred receiver calls and cases where inference does not produce a type.
Resolve calls using receiver declaration sites
codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/cpp_receivers.rs, codegraph-kernel/src/resolve/receivers.rs, __tests__/cpp-declared-type-receiver.test.ts
Receiver lookup uses inferred range-element types and declaration-site information. It checks visible class types, using declarations, and inherited methods. Tests cover resolved and unresolved cases.

Python Import Retry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve Python import binding tails
src/resolution/import-resolver.ts, src/db/reference-tail.ts, __tests__/sync-python-import-binding-retry.test.ts
Python binding-tail resolution maps aliased imports to project modules. Package initializer paths add a module lookup key. Tests cover module additions, restoration, and edits during sync.

A type written `::Registry` is looked up at global scope, not in the classes around the code. Overloads that take different parameters and return different types give no element type, since which one a call picks is not read; a const and non-const pair with the same parameters still gives one. In the line scan, a nearer declaration of the receiver inside the loop body hides the loop's variable.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject relative imports that ascend beyond the importing package.

For a top-level app package, from ..evil import Bad as BadAlias in app/main.py is invalid. pythonModulePath normalizes it to evil because it checks only the project-root boundary. The unresolved alias is then parked as module:evil. Adding or editing a project-root evil.py can retry and create a false import link.

Compute the importing package boundary before normalizing leading dots. Return null when the import ascends above that boundary.

Review: #469 (review)
Head: 7dc9fdf
Reason: Not changed. The outside-diff finding is about pythonModulePath in src/resolution/import-resolver.ts, which is upstream's colbymchenry#2501 code taken unmodified (identical to upstream/main). It documents the project root as the boundary on purpose. The case it describes, from ..evil import X climbing above a top-level package, is an ImportError in Python, so it only matters for code that cannot run. Keeping the function identical to upstream avoids a conflict on the next reconcile; upstream is where a change would belong.
