What

codegraph_sessions takes projects (CLI: --project <path...>), up to five project paths, and searches their session histories in one call. This is an experiment, built so it can be removed with one git revert.

  • Each project answers from its own .codegraph/sessions-v2.db; nothing is shared across projects. Hits interleave by each project's own rank (BM25 scores are not comparable across indexes) and name their project. One limit and one 16,000-byte passage budget cover the list.
  • A project with no transcripts, with "sessions": false, or without an index is listed as skipped and never fails the call.
  • The core is src/sessions/fanout.ts. Existing code changed only at the edges: withinPassageBudget is exported, the tool schema gains projects (and array items in PropertySchema), execute anchors a projects call on the first indexed project, and the CLI gains --project. Without projects, behaviour is unchanged.

Choices to check

  • No allowlist or config key (D2): any indexed project can be named. Passages already return as stored, credentials included.
  • A search refreshes each listed project's own session index (D4).
  • Windows path normalization is out of scope (D5).

Checks

  • npm test: 688 files, 8767 passed, 39 skipped, 0 failed. New: __tests__/sessions-fanout.test.ts (8 tests: interleave, one limit, skips, five-project cap, index isolation, shared byte budget, tool path, CLI path).
  • tsc --noEmit clean; npm run check:agent-docs passes.
  • README rows checked: the session search row in "About this fork", the CLI usage line and the codegraph_sessions tool row. Site CLI and MCP pages and the server instructions are updated; CHANGELOG has the entry. No measured number in the README moves.

Requirements: the cross-project search draft recommended deferring; the user chose to build it as an undoable experiment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Search session histories across up to five projects in one CLI command or MCP request. Results identify their project and are interleaved by each project’s ranking.
    • A shared result limit and passage budget apply across projects. Projects that cannot be searched are reported as skipped.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the CLI, MCP, and feature references to describe experimental multi-project session search.

codegraph_sessions takes projects (CLI --project), up to five paths. Each
project answers from its own session index; hits interleave by each project's
own rank and name their project, under one limit and one byte budget. A project
without transcripts, with sessions off, or without an index is listed as
skipped. The core is src/sessions/fanout.ts, so reverting this commit removes
the experiment.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds experimental session search across up to five projects. Results are interleaved by each project’s ranking, identify their project, and share a result limit and passage budget. The CLI and MCP tool accept multiple projects and report projects that cannot be searched.

Changes

Cross-project session search

Layer / File(s) Summary
Query and format results
src/sessions/fanout.ts, src/sessions/index.ts, __tests__/sessions-fanout.test.ts
Adds cross-project querying for up to five distinct targets. The search interleaves each project’s ranked hits, applies one passage budget, reports skipped targets, and formats project summaries and hits. Tests cover ranking, limits, skipped projects, duplicates, project indexes, and passage budgets.
CLI and MCP entry points
src/bin/codegraph.ts, src/mcp/tools.ts, src/mcp/server-instructions.ts, __tests__/sessions-fanout.test.ts, __tests__/mcp-tool-annotations.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md, README.md, site/src/content/docs/reference/*
Adds the CLI --project option and MCP projects input. Both entry points resolve project targets and return cross-project results; single-project MCP output retains its existing path. Tests cover both entry points. Documentation describes the options and behavior. The README feature-table and CLI descriptions remain unchanged.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to 421cc

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 421cc

For an unindexed nested project beneath an indexed parent, the CLI may return the parent’s session results instead of skipping the requested project. This is a narrow mismatch; otherwise, the change appears low risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 421cc

Cross-project search broadens each request to five projects while preserving project-specific session settings and separate indexes. Existing explicit-path access already allowed those projects to be queried individually. Deployment authorization remains unverified, and the CLI retains an existing ancestor-resolution caveat.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A request can refresh and return session data from at most five resolved project roots. The cap bounds roots per request, not all transcript files or associated worktrees within each project's existing search scope. Results share a 16,000-byte full-passage budget, with snippets retained when passages are cut.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — MCP project selection retains canonical-root resolution, sensitive-existing-path validation and rejection of uncovered nested repositories. The explicit projectPath capability already allowed caller-selected indexed projects at the merge base; aggregation does not establish a newly bypassed project authorization boundary. External caller authentication and tenancy remain unknown.
  • observed — The CLI's new project-list branch accepts an initialized ancestor returned by resolveProjectPath, so an unindexed nested path can search that ancestor instead of being skipped. The resolver and equivalent single-project exposure predate this PR through --path. Cross-project output identifies the resolved ancestor, which mitigates misattribution but does not prevent substitution.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged refresh implementation replaces each transcript under a write transaction, rechecks metadata after acquiring the write lock, and rolls back replacement failures. Deletions are transactional, and querySessions closes its index in finally. These controls preserve committed records through partial refresh failure; they do not provide an all-project snapshot or rollback.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For explicitly named CLI repositories, consider rejecting uncovered nested repositories or requiring confirmation of ancestor substitution. This would address an existing target-identity caveat rather than a demonstrated new privilege escalation.
  • proposed — If the server is exposed to callers with different project permissions, apply caller-specific root authorization to both projectPath and projects before opening indexes. The current evidence does not establish such a deployment or a newly introduced authorization failure.

- Around line 4491-4493: In `src/mcp/tools.ts` lines 4491-4493, bound the

- Around line 2074-2077: Update the no-default-project schema handling in
getTools for codegraph_sessions so clients can provide either projectPath or

then apply withinPassageBudget once to that merged selection so cut counts
reflect the shared budget.
- Line 138: Update the hit heading in the fanout flow to identify each project
unambiguously when selected projects share a directory name; use the project
root or a unique suffix instead of relying on path.basename(h.project), while
preserving the session and title information.

Budget the merged selection once (unbudgeted per-project passages), bound the
project list before resolving paths, let a projects-only call run with no
default project or no indexed project, and name a project by its root when
two share a directory name.

Review of the body (6 findings): five fixed in 421cc77 and answered in their threads; the CLI nested-repository one is declined with the reason in its thread. npm test again green apart from one annotations test that assumed every tool requires projectPath with no default project; codegraph_sessions is now the intended exception and that test says so.
