Summary

The tape's off-camera warm-up was 7s, which fills 2% of a chart. The sparklines are right-aligned over the full panel width, so the first visible frame of the hero GIF was a thin trace clinging to the right edge — it read as a dashboard that had just booted rather than one under sustained load.

The chart window is ~328 samples (~120 chart columns × 2 samples per braille char at the 1s default interval — the status line prints it as span 5m28s). The warm-up now covers the whole span at 330s, so the first frame opens on a dense trace across every panel. As a side effect of 5.5 minutes of sustained GPU load, the status line also opens on real THERMAL / THROTTLING:GPU alerts, which shows the alert engine doing its job.

For reference: 40s would have filled only ~12% — still mostly empty. The cost of the full span is wall-clock on an off-camera sleep (recording goes from ~1 min to ~6.5 min), paid once per re-record.

Also recorded in the tape: vhs Sleep takes a single unit — 5m30s is a parse error, 330s is not.

Asset

Recorded off the v1.9.8 build (the width-fit fix), 4.5 MB / 263 frames after gifsicle -O3 --lossy=100 — comfortably under the cover build's 5 MB gate, with more headroom than the --lossy=80 pass (4.6 MB). Text is crisp at both; verified frame by frame.

images/actop-demo.gif (README) and cover/actop-demo.gif (landing page) are byte-identical copies, as before.

Scope

Per the release-noise rule added in 1.9.8, this is repo-internal churn: no version bump, and no CHANGELOG.md entry in this PR — there is unrelated in-flight work sitting on [Unreleased] locally, so the GIF note lands with whatever release carries that change. The cover page will be redeployed from main after merge; its badge already reads v1.9.8.

Validation

  • First and last frames inspected after compression: full history in every panel, no clipped rows, process table populated with its PWR column.
  • bash .claude/skills/publish-cover/scripts/build-cover-dist.sh — gif validation passes (4 MB, 263 frames), secret scan clean.

The tape's off-camera warm-up was 7s, which fills 2% of a chart: the
sparklines are right-aligned over the full panel width, so the first
visible frame was a thin trace clinging to the right edge and read as a
dashboard that had just booted. The window is ~328 samples (~120 chart
columns x 2 samples per braille char at the 1s default interval — the
status line prints it as `span 5m28s`), so the warm-up now covers the
whole span at 330s and the first frame opens on a dense trace across
every panel. Sustained load for that long also means the status line
opens on real THERMAL / THROTTLING:GPU alerts.

vhs `Sleep` takes a single unit — `5m30s` is a parse error — which the
tape now records next to the value.

Recorded off the v1.9.8 build; 4.5 MB / 263 frames after
`gifsicle -O3 --lossy=100`, under the cover build's 5 MB gate.
