Description

This PR updates the kernel configuration config-7.2.8-debian13 to add support for the Intel 10GbE network adapter and USB UVC webcams.

Previously, CONFIG_IXGBE and CONFIG_USB_VIDEO_CLASS were disabled, preventing the kernel from supporting Intel 10GbE adapters using the ixgbe driver and standard USB Video Class webcams.

Changes

The following kernel configuration options were enabled and validated using make olddefconfig:

  • Intel 10GbE Network Support:

    • Enabled CONFIG_IXGBE=m for Intel 10GbE Ethernet adapters.
    • Provides support for Intel 82599-based adapters, including the Intel X520 family.
    • Enabled CONFIG_IXGBE_HWMON=y for hardware monitoring support.
    • Kept CONFIG_IXGBEVF disabled because SR-IOV Virtual Function support is not required.
    • Kept CONFIG_IXGBE_DCB disabled because Data Center Bridging support is not required.
    • make olddefconfig automatically enabled the required supporting infrastructure:
      • CONFIG_NET_DEVLINK=y
      • CONFIG_MDIO=m
      • CONFIG_LIBIE_ADMINQ=m
      • CONFIG_LIBIE_FWLOG=m
      • CONFIG_PLDMFW=y
  • USB UVC Webcam Support:

    • Enabled CONFIG_MEDIA_SUPPORT=y for the Linux media subsystem.
    • Enabled CONFIG_MEDIA_USB_SUPPORT=y for USB media devices.
    • Enabled CONFIG_USB_VIDEO_CLASS=m for standard USB Video Class (UVC) webcams.
    • Enabled CONFIG_USB_VIDEO_CLASS_INPUT_EVDEV=y for UVC input event support.
    • Enabled the required UVC and Video4Linux2 buffer infrastructure:
      • CONFIG_UVC_COMMON=m
      • CONFIG_VIDEOBUF2_CORE=m
      • CONFIG_VIDEOBUF2_V4L2=m
      • CONFIG_VIDEOBUF2_MEMOPS=m
      • CONFIG_VIDEOBUF2_VMALLOC=m
    • Enabled the required V4L2 platform infrastructure:
      • CONFIG_MEDIA_PLATFORM_DRIVERS=y
      • CONFIG_V4L_PLATFORM_DRIVERS=y
      • CONFIG_V4L_MEM2MEM_DRIVERS=y
    • No additional legacy USB webcam drivers such as GSPCA, PWC, S2255, or EM28XX were enabled.

Verification & Testing

  1. Verified the configuration changes manually in the .config file.
  2. Ran make olddefconfig to ensure dependency consistency and automatically resolve related Kconfig options.
  3. Confirmed that CONFIG_IXGBE is enabled as a module for Intel 10GbE network adapters.
  4. Confirmed that CONFIG_IXGBEVF remains disabled because SR-IOV Virtual Function support is not required.
  5. Confirmed that CONFIG_USB_VIDEO_CLASS is enabled as a module, providing the uvcvideo driver required for compatible USB UVC webcams.
  6. Confirmed that the required UVC and Video4Linux2 buffer dependencies were automatically enabled by Kconfig.
  7. Confirmed that no unnecessary legacy USB webcam drivers were enabled.
  8. The resulting configuration was generated successfully by make olddefconfig and is ready for kernel compilation and hardware validation.
