Three related MCP auth additions on the data plane: a dedicated header for the gateway credential, and two new upstream auth types for MCP servers that act on the caller's behalf.
A caller that has to present both a gateway credential and its own credential for an upstream (an MCP server behind its own OAuth) could not do it: the gateway always authenticated with Authorization first, so x-api-key: <gateway key> + Authorization: <user token> was authenticated with the user token and failed.
Precedence for the gateway credential is now x-aisix-api-key (when the header is present) > Authorization: Bearer > x-api-key. When x-aisix-api-key is present, Authorization and x-api-key are not read for gateway auth, and an empty value is the same missing-credential 401 as an empty Authorization — no fall-through. The value may be the bare key or Bearer <key>, and is evaluated by the existing path unchanged (API-key lookup, or the JWT path when it is a JWT and trust providers exist). Being in the x-aisix- namespace, it never reaches an upstream.
Applied everywhere the gateway reads an inbound credential: the AuthenticatedKey extractor (every /v1/* endpoint, /mcp, /mcp/{server}, /a2a), the MCP anonymous-entry gate (a request carrying the header is a credentialed request), the /v1/realtime WebSocket handshake, and gateway_key passthrough routes. header_key passthrough routes keep reading only their configured header.
Like the other credential headers, x-aisix-api-key is refused as an observability exporter request_headers entry (strict schema, and dropped at capture time) and as a proxy.request_id.accept_headers source.
Behavior change for existing callers: none unless they send x-aisix-api-key. One consequence worth naming: a gateway_key passthrough route in forward_client mode strips only what the gateway consumed, so when the key arrives in x-aisix-api-key the caller's Authorization / x-api-key now reach the upstream.
auth_type: oauth_delegate
For type: mcp and type: openapi. The gateway holds no upstream credential and relays the caller's own Authorization unchanged — but only an Authorization that was not what the gateway admitted the request with (i.e. the gateway key came in x-aisix-api-key). An Authorization that was the gateway credential is never sent upstream. No upstream token means the upstream is called without credentials and its own response decides. No forward_client_headers entry is needed, and one naming authorization is ignored for this auth type (the type owns that slot, so it cannot reopen the gateway key). On the aggregated /mcp the single caller Authorization is what every delegate server receives — every one the caller's MCP access rules can reach; a server outside the caller's grant is contacted without it.
Not included: answering a delegate upstream's 401 on /mcp/{server} with a challenge that sends a standard MCP client to the upstream's own authorization server. Republishing the upstream's protected-resource metadata unchanged does not get past the MCP client SDK's resource-identifier check (the metadata's resource names the upstream, not the URL the client connected to), so that part was left out rather than shipped in a form real clients reject.
For type: mcp and type: openapi. The gateway exchanges the caller's token at token_url with the Microsoft Entra ID On-Behalf-Of grant — form-encoded grant_type=urn:ietf:params:oauth:grant-type:jwt-bearer, assertion=<caller token>, scope=<scopes joined by space>, requested_token_use=on_behalf_of, client_id, client_secret — and sends the result upstream as Authorization: Bearer <token>. The caller's token never goes upstream.
Configuration reuses the oauth2 field names (token_url, client_id, secret, scopes); token_exchange_profile is new, with the single value entra_obo. secret, client_id, token_url, scopes (at least one) and token_exchange_profile are all required for this auth type.
The subject is only a bearer that a JWT trust provider verified on the same request. A caller admitted any other way — API key, anonymous MCP entry, or x-aisix-api-key (even with a valid JWT sitting unverified in Authorization) — has nothing to exchange, and nothing is sent to the token endpoint. As with delegate, the exchange only runs for servers the caller's MCP access rules can reach, and forward_client_headers: [authorization] is ignored. On /mcp/{server} for a server outside the caller's grant, the answer is the ordinary ACL outcome (an empty tools/list, a refused call), not a token-exchange 401. A deny rule that covers the whole server with a trailing * (g*, gh__*, *) counts as outside the grant.
Exchanged tokens are cached in process, keyed on a digest of the caller token + the exchange configuration + the server, until 60 s before expires_in (3600 s when absent); an upstream 401 drops the entry and the exchange is redone once. A response without a usable access token, or with a token_type other than Bearer, is not used.
Concurrent requests that miss the cache for the same key (same caller, same server) share one token-endpoint request, in process: every waiting request gets that one outcome, a token or the same failure. A failure is not remembered — once that exchange has finished, the next request asks the identity provider again.
On /mcp/{server} a failed exchange is an HTTP status, and initialize (or server/discover) runs the exchange up front so the client learns it from its first request:
no verified caller token → 401 token_exchange_subject_missing
the IdP rejecting the caller's token (any 4xx not listed below) → 401 token_exchange_subject_rejected
IdP 4xx with invalid_client, unauthorized_client, unsupported_grant_type, invalid_target or invalid_scope (the gateway's own registration or scope is wrong) → 500 token_exchange_misconfigured
IdP 429 or 408 (throttled, timed out), 5xx, unreachable, or no usable token → 503 token_exchange_unavailable
Both 401s carry the environment's MCP OAuth discovery challenge (Bearer error="invalid_token", resource_metadata="…") when that surface is active. When the IdP's rejection carries a claims value — Microsoft Entra's Conditional Access / continuous access evaluation step-up — the challenge says so and hands the claims to the client, base64-encoded, to satisfy at the IdP before retrying:
WWW-Authenticate: Bearer resource_metadata="https://gw.example.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp", error="insufficient_claims", error_description="Step-up authentication required; satisfy the returned claims challenge with the IdP and retry", claims="eyJhY2Nlc3NfdG9rZW4iOnsiY2Fwb2xpZHMiOnsiZXNzZW50aWFsIjp0cnVlLCJ2YWx1ZXMiOlsiYzEiXX19fQ=="
The IdP's error_description never reaches the caller or the logs. The aggregated /mcp keeps absorbing a per-server failure: that server's tools drop out of tools/list and a call to it fails as a tool error, so one server cannot fail the whole surface.
Compatibility
Both auth types are new values of the auth_type enum, so a gateway older than this one rejects such a row when loading it (fail-closed; the control plane is expected to refuse saving them for an environment with older gateways). schemas/resources and schemas/resources-lenient are regenerated. No startup-config key changes.
Tests
DP standalone e2e, each failing with its fix removed:
gateway-key-header-oauth-delegate-e2e: a delegate server outside the caller's grant receiving no Authorization; precedence on /v1/chat/completions and /mcp + /mcp/{server} (wrong/empty x-aisix-api-key refused beside a valid Authorization/x-api-key, unchanged behavior without it, the header never reaching the upstream); oauth_delegate on type: mcp (scoped and aggregated) and type: openapi — relayed when admitted via x-aisix-api-key, absent when Authorization was the gateway key; the forward_client passthrough route.
mcp-token-exchange-obo-e2e: exact form fields against a mock Entra token endpoint, the minted token upstream and the caller JWT never upstream, cache hit on repeat and a separate exchange per caller, 401 for an API-key caller and for an x-aisix-api-key caller with an unverified JWT (token endpoint not contacted), aggregated endpoint not failing as a whole, 401/500/503 for rejected/gateway-fault/unavailable/unreachable, 429 and 408 → 503, upstream 401 → re-exchange once, the type: openapi path, concurrent first requests from one caller → one exchange (and a shared failure that the next request does not reuse), and a step-up rejection → 401 whose WWW-Authenticate carries the claims.
realtime-ws-e2e: the WebSocket handshake honoring x-aisix-api-key.
Added x-aisix-api-key as a gateway credential option. When present, it takes precedence over other credential headers, and invalid or empty values fail authentication.
Added delegated OAuth and Entra OBO token exchange for MCP and OpenAPI connections, including token caching and a retry after upstream authentication failures.
Added claims-based authentication challenges when an upstream requires additional caller credentials.
Security
Gateway credentials are excluded from captured and forwarded header configurations. Caller credentials are only relayed to eligible delegated services.
A caller that has to present both a gateway credential and its own
credential for an upstream (an MCP server behind its own OAuth) cannot put
both in Authorization. The new x-aisix-api-key header carries the gateway
credential: when it is present it is the only header read for gateway
authentication, Authorization and x-api-key are not consulted, and an
empty value is the same missing-credential 401 as an empty Authorization
(no fall-through). Without it nothing changes: Authorization: Bearer, then
x-api-key.
The value goes through the existing credential path unchanged (API-key
lookup, or the JWT path when it is a JWT and trust providers exist). The
header is in the x-aisix- namespace, so it never reaches an upstream.
Applied at every inbound credential read: the AuthenticatedKey extractor
(all /v1/* endpoints, /mcp, /a2a), the MCP anonymous-entry gate (a request
carrying the header is a credentialed request), the /v1/realtime WebSocket
handshake, and gateway_key passthrough routes. A gateway_key route in
forward_client mode strips only what the gateway consumed, so with the key
in x-aisix-api-key the caller's Authorization / x-api-key now reach the
upstream.
Two new McpAuthType values for MCP servers, on both type: mcp and
type: openapi.
oauth_delegate: the gateway holds no upstream credential and relays the
caller's own Authorization header unchanged. Only an Authorization the
caller did not authenticate to the gateway with is relayed, i.e. when the
gateway key came in x-aisix-api-key; an Authorization that was the gateway
credential is never sent upstream. With no upstream token the server is
called without credentials and its own response decides.
oauth2_token_exchange with token_exchange_profile: entra_obo: the gateway
exchanges the caller's token for an upstream token with the Microsoft
Entra ID On-Behalf-Of grant (jwt-bearer, assertion=<caller token>,
scope=<scopes>, requested_token_use=on_behalf_of, client_id/client_secret
in the form) at token_url, and sends the result as Authorization: Bearer.
Field names reuse the oauth2 ones (token_url, client_id, secret, scopes);
token_exchange_profile is new and scopes are required. The subject is only
a bearer a JWT trust provider verified on the same request; an API-key,
anonymous or x-aisix-api-key-admitted caller has none and nothing is
exchanged. Exchanged tokens are cached in process per (caller token,
exchange config, server) until 60s before expires_in; an upstream 401
drops the entry and the exchange is redone once.
On the single-server endpoint /mcp/{server} an exchange failure is an
HTTP status: no verified token or the IdP rejecting it -> 401 (with the
environment's OAuth discovery challenge when that surface is active), the
IdP refusing the gateway's own client or scope (invalid_client,
unauthorized_client, unsupported_grant_type, invalid_target,
invalid_scope) -> 500, the IdP failing, unreachable or answering without a
usable bearer token -> 503. initialize runs the exchange up front so the
client learns this from its first request. The aggregated /mcp keeps
absorbing a per-server failure (tools drop out of tools/list, a call fails
as a tool error).
Both values are new enum values: an older gateway drops such a row, which
fails closed. Strict and lenient schemas regenerated.
Clients that can only configure a credential as `Bearer <key>` may send
it that way in x-aisix-api-key too; the key behind the scheme is what is
authenticated, the same as a bare key.

Walkthrough
The PR adds x-aisix-api-key as a gateway credential, supports caller-token delegation and Entra OBO token exchange for MCP and OpenAPI upstreams, and adds proxy error handling and end-to-end tests for these authentication flows.
Changes: Gateway credentials and delegated authorization
The proxy checks x-aisix-api-key before Authorization and x-api-key. An invalid or empty value in that header fails authentication without fallback. The header is excluded from request-ID sourcing and exporter header lists. Tests cover credential precedence and delegated authorization forwarding.
MCP server configuration adds oauth_delegate and oauth2_token_exchange modes, plus the entra_obo profile. Token exchange requires a client ID, secret, token URL, nonempty scopes, and a profile.
Token exchange and caching crates/aisix-mcp/src/token_exchange.rs, crates/aisix-mcp/src/oauth.rs, crates/aisix-mcp/src/error.rs, crates/aisix-mcp/src/lib.rs
The exchange module submits Entra OBO requests, classifies provider and configuration failures, caches tokens, and shares concurrent exchanges. It redacts credential data in debug output.
Bridge and gateway credential flow crates/aisix-mcp/src/bridge.rs, crates/aisix-mcp/src/gateway.rs, crates/aisix-mcp/src/openapi.rs, crates/aisix-mcp/tests/openapi_tool_roundtrip.rs
MCP and OpenAPI bridges use delegated authorization or exchanged bearer tokens. Token exchange supports preflight and one retry after an upstream 401. The gateway passes caller credentials only to servers the tool ACL may reach.
The proxy passes verified caller credentials into MCP requests and maps token-exchange failures to status codes and authentication challenges. Tests cover exchange success, rejection, caching, retries, concurrency, and claims challenges.

Explanation
Each change connects to #1840 or #1898. (a) GATEWAY_CREDENTIAL_HEADER, header precedence, and the header_credential helper are required for the delegate and OBO admission rules. (b) Refusal of x-aisix-api-key in observability exporter schemas, exported_header_names, CREDENTIAL_HEADERS, and the exporter test fixture follows the PR's stated rule for credential headers. (c) oauth_delegate and oauth2_token_exchange model fields, schema changes, and entra_obo profile enforce the new configuration. (d) Token exchange, error, challenge, and gateway/bridge changes implement the OBO flow. (e) oauth.rs visibility changes let the token-exchange module reuse the existing OAuth HTTP client and token lifetime constants. (f) openapi_tool_roundtrip.rs and upstream-mcp.ts changes are test support for the new paths. (g) attempt.rs treats McpTokenExchange as a gateway-side error, which the new error variant requires. Assessment is based on the PR summary and raw change summary. No unrelated change was demonstrated.
Full details: Security Check
Explanation
Category 1 — CRITICAL: McpServer derives unredacted Serialize and Debug at crates/aisix-core/src/models/mcp_server.rs:44; secret remains a serializable Option<String> at lines 105-113. The new oauth2_token_exchange type requires this field, and /admin/v1/mcp_servers returns ResourceEntry<McpServer> directly (crates/aisix-admin/src/mcp_servers_handlers.rs:16-34). An OBO client secret can therefore appear in admin JSON responses. Category 2 — CRITICAL: The new OBO configuration requires plaintext secret (mcp_server.rs:378-397), and the data plane copies it to client_secret (crates/aisix-mcp/src/bridge.rs:950-987). Etcd reads entity JSON directly with serde_json::from_slice (crates/aisix-admin/src/etcd_store.rs:143-159), with no encryption wrapper in this path. The PR activates this plaintext storage path for a new credential type. Category 3 — No issues found. Category 4 — No issues found. Category 5 — No issues found. Category 6 — No issues found. Category 7 — No issues found.
Resolution
Store McpServer.secret with an encrypted-at-rest type or a managed secret reference. Resolve it only in the data plane immediately before the token request. Replace the admin list/get representation with a write-only or redacted DTO that never serializes the resolved secret. Migrate existing bearer, API-key, OAuth2, and OBO records. Add tests that etcd values and admin responses do not contain the client secret.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#1840] Implemented: (1) x-aisix-api-key gateway credential with precedence over Authorization: Bearer and x-api-key (auth.rs, passthrough_route.rs, realtime.rs, mcp.rs); (2) auth_type: oauth_delegate for type: mcp and type: openapi, relaying the caller Authorization only when the gateway key arrived in x-aisix-api-key (bridge.rs, openapi.rs, gateway.rs); (3) e2e coverage in gateway-key-header-oauth-delegate-e2e. Not implemented: the web OAuth authorization flow the issue requests. The issue lists an Authorization URL (browser redirect), callback handling, and user-token acquisition as a separate capability from delegation. No changed file in the summary contains authorization URL handling, callback processing, or an authorization-code exchange for an upstream user token. oauth.rs changes are visibility-only. The PR description excludes the upstream challenge flow. The issue states the two capabilities can be combined or used alone, but the PR still claims Fixes #1840 for the whole issue. [#1898] Implemented: auth_type: oauth2_token_exchange with token_exchange_profile: entra_obo (token_exchange.rs). It sends the required OBO form fields, does not send the caller token upstream, caches tokens, coalesces concurrent exchanges, retries once after upstream 401, and maps failures to 401/500/503 (error.rs, proxy error.rs, mcp_auth.rs). E2e coverage is in mcp-token-exchange-obo-e2e. The issue body adds no further coding criteria. Its linked internal document was not accessible, so this assessment relies on the issue title and the PR's stated scope.
Resolution
Implement the upstream browser authorization flow for MCP and OpenAPI servers named in #1840: authorization URL configuration, callback endpoint with state handling, and authorization-code exchange that stores the per-user token for delegation. Add automated tests for these paths. Alternatively, move the browser authorization work to a separate linked issue, remove Fixes #1840 from the PR description, and reference #1840 as partial scope.
Full details: E2e Test Quality Review
Explanation
The previous E2E test-quality failure remains unresolved. mcp-token-exchange-obo-e2e.test.ts:442-462 only awaits eight concurrent requests; it does not abort all waiters and then verify that the shared exchange completes and is reused. The mock provider at :93-126 has no malformed, missing-token, non-bearer, or non-access-token success responses. crates/aisix-mcp/src/token_exchange.rs:359-388 handles those cases, but the repository has no focused tests for them, expiry parsing, or cache behavior.
Resolution
Add an E2E case that starts a slow exchange, aborts every waiter after the provider request begins, waits for the provider response, and verifies a later caller reuses the completed token. Add mock-provider cases for malformed JSON, missing access_token, non-bearer token_type, and non-access issued_token_type, and assert each returns token_exchange_unavailable without sending a token upstream. Add focused unit tests for expires_in_secs and cache expiry/eviction behavior.

Review fixes for the delegate / token-exchange auth types and the new
gateway credential header:
- The aggregated /mcp built every server's bridge with the caller's
credentials and filtered by the tool ACL only after listing, so a
delegate server the caller has no grant for still received the caller's
Authorization, and an exchange server outside the grant still had the
caller's token exchanged for it. Caller credentials now go only to
servers the caller's ACL can reach (ToolAcl::may_reach_server); the
gateway constructors take the ACL for that.
- For oauth_delegate / oauth2_token_exchange the auth type owns the
authorization slot: a forward_client_headers entry naming it no longer
relays the caller's Authorization, which could be the gateway key.
- x-aisix-api-key is refused as an observability exporter request header
(strict schema and capture time) and as a request-id source, like the
other credential headers.
- The up-front exchange on /mcp/{server} also runs for server/discover.
- A token-exchange failure on a scoped tools/call is recorded as not
dispatched; a second rejected exchanged token is dropped from the cache
too; an API-key caller on the aggregated endpoint no longer logs a
warning per tools/list for each exchange server.
…navailable
- A token-endpoint 429 or 408 is the identity provider throttling or timing
out, not a verdict on the caller's token: it now maps to 503
token_exchange_unavailable instead of 401 token_exchange_subject_rejected.
- Concurrent cache misses for the same caller and server share one
token-endpoint request; every waiter receives its outcome, success or
failure, and a failure is not reused by the next request.
- When the provider's rejection carries a `claims` challenge (Microsoft
Entra Conditional Access / continuous access evaluation step-up), the
401 on /mcp/{server} answers with
`Bearer resource_metadata="...", error="insufficient_claims",
error_description="...", claims="<base64 of the claims>"` so the client
can satisfy it at the provider and retry. The provider's
error_description is still never surfaced or logged.
…aiter leaves
An exchange that every waiter abandoned (client disconnect, upstream connect
timeout) stayed in the in-flight map and was resumed, past its HTTP deadline,
by a later unrelated request. The exchange now runs as its own task, so it
always finishes, caches its token and leaves the map.
…ials from it
may_reach_server only recognised `*` and `<server>__*` as denying a whole
server, so a broader trailing-`*` deny such as `g*` still let the caller's
delegated Authorization or exchanged token reach `gh`. Any trailing-`*` glob
whose head every `<server>__` tool starts with now counts.
Also corrects the forward_client_headers description: naming `authorization`
on an oauth_delegate or oauth2_token_exchange server has no effect (those auth
types own that slot), and puts two doc comments back on the items they
describe.
Use a readiness gate that does not exercise the behavior under test.
The gate posts to /mcp/oboreject and checks the challenge asserted later. If the challenge regresses, the gate can report a propagation timeout and adds extra exchange requests.
Use the protected-resource metadata endpoint as the readiness condition. Consume the response body in the polling callback.

…with the ACL, not a 401
On /mcp/{server}, a JWT caller whose MCP access rules cannot reach an
oauth2_token_exchange server got 401 token_exchange_subject_missing with an
invalid_token challenge — a sign-in loop that cannot succeed, since the cause is
the missing grant. Such a server now skips the up-front exchange and records no
exchange failure, so the caller sees the ordinary ACL outcome (an empty
tools/list, a refused tools/call).

Three related MCP auth additions on the data plane: a dedicated header for the gateway credential, and two new upstream auth types for MCP servers that act on the caller's behalf.

AuthenticatedKeyextractor (every/v1/*endpoint,/mcp,/mcp/{server},/a2a), the MCP anonymous-entry gate (a request carrying the header is a credentialed request), the/v1/realtimeWebSocket handshake, andgateway_keypassthrough routes.header_keypassthrough routes keep reading only their configured header.Like the other credential headers,
x-aisix-api-keyis refused as an observability exporterrequest_headersentry (strict schema, and dropped at capture time) and as aproxy.request_id.accept_headerssource.Behavior change for existing callers: none unless they send
x-aisix-api-key. One consequence worth naming: agateway_keypassthrough route inforward_clientmode strips only what the gateway consumed, so when the key arrives inx-aisix-api-keythe caller'sAuthorization/x-api-keynow reach the upstream.auth_type: oauth_delegateFor
type: mcpandtype: openapi. The gateway holds no upstream credential and relays the caller's ownAuthorizationunchanged — but only anAuthorizationthat was not what the gateway admitted the request with (i.e. the gateway key came inx-aisix-api-key). AnAuthorizationthat was the gateway credential is never sent upstream. No upstream token means the upstream is called without credentials and its own response decides. Noforward_client_headersentry is needed, and one namingauthorizationis ignored for this auth type (the type owns that slot, so it cannot reopen the gateway key). On the aggregated/mcpthe single callerAuthorizationis what every delegate server receives — every one the caller's MCP access rules can reach; a server outside the caller's grant is contacted without it.Not included: answering a delegate upstream's 401 on
/mcp/{server}with a challenge that sends a standard MCP client to the upstream's own authorization server. Republishing the upstream's protected-resource metadata unchanged does not get past the MCP client SDK's resource-identifier check (the metadata'sresourcenames the upstream, not the URL the client connected to), so that part was left out rather than shipped in a form real clients reject.auth_type: oauth2_token_exchange+token_exchange_profile: entra_oboFor
type: mcpandtype: openapi. The gateway exchanges the caller's token attoken_urlwith the Microsoft Entra ID On-Behalf-Of grant — form-encodedgrant_type=urn:ietf:params:oauth:grant-type:jwt-bearer,assertion=<caller token>,scope=<scopes joined by space>,requested_token_use=on_behalf_of,client_id,client_secret— and sends the result upstream asAuthorization: Bearer <token>. The caller's token never goes upstream.Configuration reuses the
oauth2field names (token_url,client_id,secret,scopes);token_exchange_profileis new, with the single valueentra_obo.secret,client_id,token_url,scopes(at least one) andtoken_exchange_profileare all required for this auth type. The subject is only a bearer that a JWT trust provider verified on the same request. A caller admitted any other way — API key, anonymous MCP entry, or
x-aisix-api-key(even with a valid JWT sitting unverified inAuthorization) — has nothing to exchange, and nothing is sent to the token endpoint. As with delegate, the exchange only runs for servers the caller's MCP access rules can reach, andforward_client_headers: [authorization]is ignored. On/mcp/{server}for a server outside the caller's grant, the answer is the ordinary ACL outcome (an emptytools/list, a refused call), not a token-exchange 401. A deny rule that covers the whole server with a trailing*(g*,gh__*,*) counts as outside the grant.Exchanged tokens are cached in process, keyed on a digest of the caller token + the exchange configuration + the server, until 60 s before
expires_in(3600 s when absent); an upstream 401 drops the entry and the exchange is redone once. A response without a usable access token, or with atoken_typeother than Bearer, is not used.Concurrent requests that miss the cache for the same key (same caller, same server) share one token-endpoint request, in process: every waiting request gets that one outcome, a token or the same failure. A failure is not remembered — once that exchange has finished, the next request asks the identity provider again.
On
/mcp/{server}a failed exchange is an HTTP status, andinitialize(orserver/discover) runs the exchange up front so the client learns it from its first request:token_exchange_subject_missingtoken_exchange_subject_rejectedinvalid_client,unauthorized_client,unsupported_grant_type,invalid_targetorinvalid_scope(the gateway's own registration or scope is wrong) → 500token_exchange_misconfiguredtoken_exchange_unavailableBoth 401s carry the environment's MCP OAuth discovery challenge (
Bearer error="invalid_token", resource_metadata="…") when that surface is active. When the IdP's rejection carries aclaimsvalue — Microsoft Entra's Conditional Access / continuous access evaluation step-up — the challenge says so and hands the claims to the client, base64-encoded, to satisfy at the IdP before retrying:The IdP's
error_descriptionnever reaches the caller or the logs. The aggregated/mcpkeeps absorbing a per-server failure: that server's tools drop out oftools/listand a call to it fails as a tool error, so one server cannot fail the whole surface.Compatibility
Both auth types are new values of the
auth_typeenum, so a gateway older than this one rejects such a row when loading it (fail-closed; the control plane is expected to refuse saving them for an environment with older gateways).schemas/resourcesandschemas/resources-lenientare regenerated. No startup-config key changes.Tests

x-aisix-api-keyas a gateway credential option. When present, it takes precedence over other credential headers, and invalid or empty values fail authentication.
