Summary

Spec-load headers no longer follow cross-origin redirects

safeFetch handles redirects manually so every hop is re-validated, but it re-sent the caller's headers on every hop. A fromURL call with headers: { Authorization: 'Bearer …' } against a spec host with an open redirect, or a compromised one, sent the token to whatever origin the redirect named. Plain fetch strips Authorization across origins; this loop did not. (External $ref fetches were already safe: they never receive headers.)

The redirect loop now drops all caller headers once a hop leaves the original origin: another host, another port, or an https → http downgrade. They stay dropped for the rest of the chain, even if it later returns to the original origin. It drops every caller header, not just Authorization, Cookie and Proxy-Authorization, because headers exists to authenticate to the spec host and custom names like X-API-Key or PRIVATE-TOKEN would leak the same way. Same-origin redirects keep the headers.

Host lists match the normalized hostname

allowedHosts and blockedHosts were matched with an exact includes() against new URL().hostname, which keeps a trailing root dot. So http://internal.corp./ got past blockedHosts: ['internal.corp']. With allowInternalIPs: true, that list is the only host guard. A mixed-case entry (['Internal.Corp']) or one written with a trailing dot never matched anything.

Hostnames and list entries are now compared in one canonical form: trimmed, lowercase, IPv6 brackets removed, trailing dots removed. This covers:

  • assertUrlSafe (spec URL and every redirect hop)
  • isBlockedHostname
  • the external-$ref canRead allow-list

The built-in internal names use the same form, so localhost. and metadata.google.internal. are rejected by the name list before DNS. Before, only DNS resolution caught them, and DNS isn't available on edge runtimes.

Hardening: IPv6 forms that embed an IPv4 address

These IPv6 forms are now checked against the IPv4 ranges:

  • NAT64 well-known prefix 64:ff9b::/96
  • 6to4 2002::/16
  • IPv4-compatible ::/96
  • IPv4-translated ::ffff:0:0:0/96
  • uncompressed IPv4-mapped forms

The local-use NAT64 prefix 64:ff9b:1::/48 is blocked. On a NAT64 network, a literal like [64:ff9b::a9fe:a9fe], or a name whose only record is such an AAAA, could otherwise reach an internal IPv4 target. The existing IPv6 prefix checks are unchanged; the new checks only add blocks.

Regression tests

  • ssrf.spec.ts
    • safeFetch keeps headers on same-origin hops and drops them on cross-origin, cross-port and downgrade hops, and never restores them.
    • Real-wire test with two loopback servers: the redirect target receives neither Authorization nor X-API-Key.
    • Trailing-dot, mixed-case and bracketed matching for blockedHosts/allowedHosts, with allowInternalIPs on and off.
    • Trailing-dot built-in names; the embedded-IPv4 IPv6 forms, both blocked and public; malformed IPv6.
  • generator.spec.ts
    • fromURL cross-origin redirect over real loopback servers.
    • fromURL with blockedHosts: ['localhost'] refuses localhost. / LOCALHOST. without a request reaching the server.
    • $ref canRead normalization.

All 37 new behavioural tests failed before the fix.

Docs

  • docs/ssrf-prevention.md: new "Hostname Matching" and "Headers and Redirects" sections, plus a table of the IPv6 forms that embed an IPv4 address.
  • docs/configuration.md and the LoadOptions.headers / RefResolutionOptions JSDoc describe the new behaviour.

Behaviour change

A spec host that redirects to a different origin no longer receives the caller's headers on that hop. If the target also needs credentials, load the final URL directly. Signed or pre-authorized redirect URLs, such as CDN links, are unaffected.

Verification

  • yarn build
  • tsc --noEmit
  • yarn test:coverage: 1097 tests, 100% statements/branches/functions/lines
  • yarn test:e2e: 56 tests
  • A standalone script reproduces both issues against the published 2.8.0 and current main through fromURL. Against this branch's build, the redirect target receives no credentials and every trailing-dot or mixed-case spelling is blocked.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved SSRF protection for IPv6 addresses that embed private IPv4 targets, including NAT64 and other transition formats.
    • Host allowlists and blocklists now match consistently regardless of capitalization, trailing dots, or IPv6 brackets.
    • Request headers are no longer forwarded across origins, HTTPS downgrades, or external reference fetches.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified host matching, redirect behavior, header restrictions, and SSRF protections.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for redirects, header stripping, IPv6 formats, and hostname normalization.

…ists

safeFetch re-sent the caller's headers (the spec host's Authorization or
API key) on every redirect hop, so a spec host with an open redirect, or a
compromised one, could forward the token to any origin. The redirect loop
now drops all caller headers once a hop leaves the original origin (another
host, port, or an https -> http downgrade) and never restores them later in
the chain.

allowedHosts / blockedHosts were matched with an exact string compare
against new URL().hostname, which keeps a trailing root dot, so
`http://internal.corp./` slipped past `blockedHosts: ['internal.corp']`
(the only host guard when allowInternalIPs is on). Hostnames and list
entries are now compared lowercase with trailing dots and IPv6 brackets
removed, in assertUrlSafe, isBlockedHostname and the $ref canRead
allow-list. The built-in internal names (localhost., metadata.google.internal.)
use the same normalization.

Hardening: IPv6 addresses that embed an IPv4 address (NAT64 64:ff9b::/96,
6to4 2002::/16, IPv4-compatible and IPv4-translated forms, uncompressed
mapped forms) are now checked against the IPv4 ranges, and the local-use
NAT64 prefix 64:ff9b:1::/48 is blocked.

Regression tests cover both reported issues through safeFetch and fromURL
over real loopback servers, the $ref canRead filter, and the IPv6 forms.

src/ssrf.ts:237-242
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Stop returning early when an IPv4-mapped decode finds a public address. The early return bypasses the new 6to4 check and the ULA and link-local checks.

decodeIpv4MappedIpv6 searches for ::ffff: with lastIndexOf anywhere in the address. It does not check only the ::ffff:0:0/96 prefix. When the decoded IPv4 address is public, isBlockedAddress returns false at once. It never reaches isBlockedIpv6.

Trace for http://[fd00::ffff:808:808]/:

  1. normalizeHostname returns fd00::ffff:808:808.
  2. decodeIpv4MappedIpv6 returns 8.8.8.8.
  3. isBlockedIpv4 returns false, so isBlockedAddress returns false.
  4. isIpLiteral returns true, so assertUrlSafe returns [].
  5. safeFetch connects to the ULA address.

new URL compresses fd00:0:0:0:0:ffff:808:808 into this same form, so uncompressed spellings are also affected. The same path accepts 2002:a00:1::ffff:808:808. That is a 6to4 address that embeds 10.0.0.1, so the 6to4 check added in this PR never runs for it. An untrusted spec can use either address as an external $ref target.

parseIpv6 and embeddedIpv4 now handle true IPv4-mapped addresses. Let the decode block only. Do not let it allow.

Add a regression case for a non-mapped prefix followed by ::ffff:<public IPv4>.

The table does not cover addresses such as 2002:a00:1::ffff:808:808 or fd00::ffff:808:808. The early decodeIpv4MappedIpv6 return in isBlockedAddress lets both through, as described in the src/ssrf.ts comment. Add both addresses to the blocked it.each list. The tests should fail before the fix and pass after it.

isBlockedAddress decoded `::ffff:<ipv4>` found anywhere in the address and
returned its verdict directly, so `fd00::ffff:808:808` (ULA),
`fe80::ffff:808:808` (link-local) and `2002:a00:1::ffff:808:808` (6to4 for
10.0.0.1) were allowed because the tail spells 8.8.8.8. The mapped decode
now only ever blocks; a public result falls through to the IPv6 prefix and
embedded-IPv4 checks.

normalizeHostname trims trailing dots with a loop instead of /\.+$/, which
is quadratic on hostnames with long runs of dots.

Moves the host-matching note in docs/configuration.md below the
RefResolutionOptions table so the allowInternalIPs row still renders.

@coderabbitai The two findings from the review body are addressed in 1105f2a.

  • Outside diff, src/ssrf.ts IPv4-mapped early return: confirmed. The bug predates this PR: fd00::ffff:808:808 and fe80::ffff:808:808 were already allowed, and 2002:a00:1::ffff:808:808 skipped the new 6to4 check. The mapped decode in isBlockedAddress is now block-only (if (o && isBlockedIpv4(o)) return true;). A public result falls through to the IPv6 prefix and embedded-IPv4 checks. True ::ffff:<public> addresses are still allowed, by way of the group parser.
  • Nitpick, regression cases: added fd00::ffff:808:808, fe80::ffff:808:808 and 2002:a00:1::ffff:808:808 to isBlockedAddress. Added [fd00::ffff:8.8.8.8] and [2002:a00:1::ffff:808:808] at the assertUrlSafe level. All of these failed before the fix.

@frontegg-david Confirmed in 1105f2a. Both findings are addressed.

  • In src/ssrf.ts, the mapped decode now returns early only for blocked IPv4 addresses. Public tails continue through the IPv6 checks.
  • In src/__tests__/ssrf.spec.ts, the three isBlockedAddress cases and two assertUrlSafe cases are present.

I verified the code and test assertions by inspection. I did not run the tests.
