The project creator omits the Dockerfile for unsupported Yarn versions. For supported managers, the Dockerfile uses the selected manager’s lockfile and install commands. PR Checklist
create-voltagent-app.What is the current behavior?
Every project created by
create-voltagent-appreceives the same Dockerfile, regardless of the package manager chosen in the wizard. Both Docker build stages copyyarn.lock*andpnpm-lock.yaml*before attempting an install. Docker requires a matching source for eachCOPYinstruction, so an npm project with onlypackage-lock.jsonfails at the first Yarn lockfile copy. The conditional install command cannot help because it runs after those copies. A Bun project has the same issue and, even if those copies were skipped, would fall through tonpm ciwithout an npm lockfile. This breaks the generated Docker deployment workflow at the point where a new user would expect the scaffold to work out of the box. It also makes the Dockerfile misleading: its install logic implies package-manager support that the preceding copy instructions prevent.
What is the new behavior?
The Dockerfile template now has slots for a lockfile
COPY, a build-stage install command, and a production-stage install command. The scaffold fills those slots from the package manager already selected for the project:COPY package*.json ./includespackage-lock.jsonnpm cinpm ci --omit=devyarn.lockyarn install --frozen-lockfileyarn install --frozen-lockfile --productionpnpm-lock.yamlpnpm install --frozen-lockfilepnpm install --frozen-lockfile --prodbun.lock*bun install --frozen-lockfilebun install --frozen-lockfile --productionThe generated Dockerfiles pin the selected pnpm or Bun version. Bun comes from the matching official Alpine image. For supported managers, dependency installation remains before
COPY . ., preserving the Docker dependency-layer cache. The application build, runtime user, and entrypoint remain as they were. Why this approach
The project generator already has a typed
packageManagerchoice. Rendering the relevant Docker instructions at scaffold time avoids asking Docker to copy files that cannot exist for the chosen setup. It also gives Bun its own install path instead of relying on the npm fallback. The same substitutions are applied to both stages so the runtime image does not fail after the builder stage succeeds. Yarn Modern remains selectable for project creation. Because this Dockerfile does not support Yarn 2+, those projects are created without a Dockerfile; the CLI warns before installation and the generated README explains what is needed for Docker deployment.Verification
pnpm --filter create-voltagent-app exec vitest run src/cli.integration.spec.ts src/utils/package-manager.spec.ts src/utils/templates.spec.ts— passed: 6 tests across 3 files. The CLI matrix includes npm, Yarn Classic, Yarn Modern, pnpm, and Bun; the Yarn Modern scenario confirms the warning, successful scaffold, omitted Dockerfile, and README explanation.pnpm --filter create-voltagent-app build— passed: JavaScript and declaration builds.pnpm --filter create-voltagent-app exec biome check src/cli.ts src/project-creator.ts src/utils/package-manager.ts src/utils/templates.ts src/cli.integration.spec.ts src/utils/package-manager.spec.ts— passed.git diff --check— passed.Notes for reviewers
The change covers the Dockerfile template and renderer, package-manager selection, the generated README, scaffold tests, and a patch changeset. The issue and fix address the package-manager selection made by the CLI rather than inferring a manager from whichever lockfiles happen to be present later.
