test(tui): pin the cwd in tests that assert text is absent from the view - #1170
Vasanthdev2004 wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
Nine tests built their model with an empty Options.Cwd, so newModel took the package directory and the title bar showed the developer's real branch and checkout path. Each then asserted that some text was absent from the whole view, and failed wherever that branch or path happened to contain it: TestSuggestionOverlayRenders on a branch with /model in its name, TestSuggestionOverlayCapsRowsWithoutMoreText on a branch or path containing "more" or "compact", the provider wizard tests on "offline", "chatgpt" or "gpt-4.1", and so on. They now pin Options.Cwd to isolatedCwd, a path that does not exist, so no branch is read and the path is the same on every machine. A guard test checks that isolatedCwd stays outside any git checkout.

The fixed /workspace/zero path could exist on some machine, a dev container for one, and newModel would then read whatever is there. On Windows it was also only drive-relative: \workspace\zero is not a fully qualified path. isolatedCwd is now a child of the home TestMain isolates that nothing creates, so it is fully qualified, absent and outside any checkout on every platform, and the title bar shows ~/not-a-checkout everywhere. A t.TempDir path would have put the user name and the test name into the view. The guard test checks all three properties.

I found one test-isolation defect that needs correction before merge.
Merge readiness
The reviewed head is c91bc7f26b6d, with merge base 6393a90ed618. At evidence capture, main was 84c1b1554076, one commit ahead. Follow the fresh-base rule in AGENTS.md before merge. The target-only commit is #1165 (OAuth/securefile); it has no overlap with these seven test files or release metadata, and a local merge simulation found no conflicts.
Captured GitHub state is MERGEABLE / CLEAN, with all 13 reported checks passing, including unit tests, race detection, and Linux/macOS/Windows smoke checks. The reviewed head has a member approval. Applicable branch rules were inspected; no required-status-check rule was returned.
Findings
🟡 P2 — Make the changed view fixtures independent of temporary-directory Git ancestry
📍 Where: internal/tui/hermetic_test.go:25–45, especially the returned path at line 31, and every changed Options.Cwd initialization listed below.
💥 What fails: Setting TMPDIR to a directory inside a checkout makes the new TestIsolatedCwdIsAbsentAndOutsideACheckout fail even on an ordinary branch such as main. TestMain creates its isolated home beneath that temporary directory, so the returned child has the checkout as an ancestor:
gitBranch(".../zero-tui-test-home-.../not-a-checkout") = "main";
isolatedCwd must not be inside a git checkout
A colliding ancestor branch also reaches the rendered title. With feat/model-picker, TestSuggestionOverlayRenders renders feat/model-picker ~/not-a-checkout and fails its /model exclusion. I reproduced analogous failures at all nine changed initialization sites. A temporary directory inside a different checkout also contaminates tests running from an otherwise non-colliding checkout.
A minimal Unix reproduction for the new guard is:
mkdir -p .tmp
TMPDIR="$PWD/.tmp" go test ./internal/tui -run '^TestIsolatedCwdIsAbsentAndOutsideACheckout$' -count=1🔎 Root cause: An absent child is not sufficient to isolate Git ancestry. isolatedCwd returns:
return filepath.Join(home, "not-a-checkout")The existing gitBranch calls agent.FindProjectGitRoot, which walks parent directories even when the starting directory does not exist. This PR's new fixtures therefore depend on the temporary root's enclosing repository. The assumption is shared by the helper, its guard, its new comments, and all nine changed initialization sites.
📜 Stated contract:
“isolatedCwd must not be inside a git checkout” — the new guard at
hermetic_test.go:45.
“suggestion overlay should display command names without slash prefixes” — the existing assertion at
autocomplete_test.go:319.
🏷️ Attribution: PR-introduced. The clearest regression is the new guard failing on an ordinary branch with a checkout-local temporary directory. That guard does not exist at merge base or captured main; their existing selected tests pass under the same setup. This alone establishes a new suite failure within this PR's test changes.
The changed rendering fixtures provide additional evidence: their new Cwd makes model initialization consult the temporary home's Git ancestry. With the same execution directory, temporary Git fixture and branch for each comparison, all nine listed cases pass with merge-base test sources, fail at the reviewed head, and pass with captured-main test sources. A separate fresh fixture confirms:
| Temporary-root ancestor branch | Reviewed head | Merge-base / captured-main test sources |
|---|---|---|
main |
New guard fails | Guard absent; existing selected rendering tests pass |
feat/model-picker |
TestSuggestionOverlayRenders fails |
Same rendering test passes |
more |
TestSuggestionOverlayCapsRowsWithoutMoreText fails |
Same rendering test passes |
The relevant production functions and TestMain are unchanged across those revisions. A collision from the original execution checkout is older behavior; this finding concerns the new guard and the changed fixtures' newly consulted temporary-root ancestry.

The shared ask-user helper has 13 callers; its fixture correction should apply to all of them. The new hermetic_test.go helper, guard and explanatory comments belong to this same correction. No operator-facing Markdown, CLI help, JSON, generated examples or UI copy changes are in this diff.
🔒 Unchanged on main: TestMain, testutil.IsolateUserDirs, gitBranch, FindProjectGitRoot, and the production header behavior. Their existing behavior explains the failure; it does not require a production rewrite.
🔧 Required correction: Keep the changed fixtures' effective header branch deterministic when the temporary root is inside a checkout, and align the guard/comments with that mechanism. A small test-only fixture adjustment, such as explicitly controlling the constructed model's branch, can achieve this. Preserve the absent, fully qualified cwd and stable display where needed.
Add controlled regression evidence with a Git ancestor: an ordinary branch must not make the suite fail, and a colliding branch must not contaminate a real rendered-view assertion. Shared regression evidence can cover the common fixture mechanism; a separate new test for each table row is unnecessary.
🛠️ Author fix: Apply the same small fixture correction to the helper, guard/comments and every listed initialization site in one pass, including the shared ask-user helper. A guard-only deletion leaves the demonstrated rendering failures; a first-caller-only edit leaves the sibling sites exposed. Keep this repair within the changed test fixtures.
🚫 Out of scope: Changing production Git discovery or rendering, redesigning user-directory isolation, migrating untouched tests, or repairing unrelated baseline failures.
Surface and lifecycle audit
| Boundary | Review result |
|---|---|
| Create → derive → consume | TestMain creates isolated user roots; the new helper derives an absent child; newModel reads commands and Git ancestry; the header renders cwd/branch. The ancestry edge is the finding above. |
| Effects and ordering | The changed cases exercise real model updates/views. Live/fallback discovery callbacks are executed explicitly; no new agent, credential-save or LSP effect is introduced. |
| Persistence / restoration | No changed persisted state or restore contract. Default session storage remains under the existing isolated user root. |
| Cleanup | Existing TestMain restores the environment and removes its root. No changed consumer creates the shared absent child. |
Validation and value
go vet -mod=readonly ./internal/tui ./internal/testutil, changed-filegofmt, and diff hygiene pass.- The complete TUI package passes with
TZ=UTC. In the local timezone, an unchanged date-formatting test fails identically at merge base, head and captured main; that is outside this repair. - The controlled nine-case rendering matrix passes with merge-base/captured-main test sources and fails at the reviewed head; a fresh fixture also confirms the ordinary-branch guard failure. Default-temp runs pass.
- Related merged fixes #1072, #1114 and #688 address different isolation inputs and do not supersede this change. The prior CodeRabbit fixed-path concern is addressed by the current absolute, absent home-child fixture; the ancestry failure above is a separate verified edge.
The scoped change has concrete value: it removes ambient checkout text from negative view assertions in ordinary setups, with a small test-only maintenance cost. Correcting the temporary-root ancestry assumption completes that same scope.
…he cwd isolatedCwd is a child of the isolated home, which lives under the temporary directory. With TMPDIR inside a checkout, gitBranch walks up from that absent path to the checkout and puts its branch in the title bar, so the guard failed on an ordinary branch and a colliding branch broke the nine view tests again. newViewTestModel now builds those models: it sets the isolated cwd and clears the branch after construction, since no path can promise there is no checkout above it. The guard keeps only what a path can promise (fully qualified and absent), and a new test puts the home inside a checkout on feat/model-picker and checks that neither that branch nor the real checkout path reaches the view.

…checkout test The test checked the branch strings and that the isolated cwd shows, but a view could show both the isolated cwd and a real checkout path without failing it. It now also asserts that neither the enclosing checkout nor the directory the tests run from appears in the view.
What changed
Nine
internal/tuitests now build their model through a newnewViewTestModel(t, opts)instead ofnewModelwith an emptyOptions.Cwd. It sets the cwd toisolatedCwd(t), a child of the homeTestMainalready isolates that nothing creates, so the title bar shows~/not-a-checkouton every machine. It also clears the branch after construction:gitBranchwalks up from the cwd even though it does not exist, so a temporary directory inside a checkout would otherwise still put that checkout's branch in the view. The nine tests:TestSuggestionOverlayRendersandTestSuggestionOverlayCapsRowsWithoutMoreTextTestEmptyStateCollapsesAfterFirstPromptTestProviderWizardSkipsAPIKeyForLocalProvidersAndEscCloses,TestProviderWizardUsesLiveDiscoveredModelsandTestProviderWizardKeepsFallbackModelsWhenLiveDiscoveryFailsTestMCPManagerSearchFiltersMarketplaceTestGenericCustomProviderDisplayUsesEndpointNameTestAskUserSinglePickerDefaultsToRecommendedAndSubmits, throughnewAskUserModel, which every ask-user test sharesTestIsolatedCwdIsAbsentAndFullyQualifiedguards the path, andTestViewTestModelKeepsAnEnclosingCheckoutsBranchOutOfTheViewputs the home inside a checkout onfeat/model-pickerand checks that neither that branch nor the real checkout path reaches a rendered view. The change is test-only.Why
With an empty
Options.Cwd,newModeluses the package directory, so the title bar shows the branch and checkout path of whoever runs the tests. Each of these tests asserts that some text is absent from the whole view, so it fails on a branch or path that happens to contain that text. I hit it on a branch namedtest/modelsdev-fetch-env:To find the rest, I ran the package on
mainunder branch names built from the literals these tests assert are absent, about 60 words over 20 names, and under three checkout paths built the same way. These nine are everything that failed. For example, a branch containingmoreorcompact, or a checkout under a directory containingmore, failsTestSuggestionOverlayCapsRowsWithoutMoreText. A branch containingoffline,chatgptorgpt-4.1fails the provider wizard tests. A branch containinginteractivefailsTestEmptyStateCollapsesAfterFirstPrompt.Whether the branch shows at all depends on the length of the checkout path, through the same width ladder #1072 describes, so the failures come and go between machines. The probe ran from a short path, where the header shows both the branch and the path.
Related to #1103, which isolated the user directories for these tests in #1114 but not the working directory.
