Adds a Custom Music page (sidebar, under Patches) that lists every piece of music Retro Rewind can play and lets players replace any of it by dropping in an audio file.

image
  • Catalog: original course, arena, menu and jingle streams (names checked against revo_kart.brsar), plus Retro Rewind tracks and arenas read from Pulsar's Config*.pul (CUPS, BMG names, creator file names), including checkpoint music parts and tracks that borrow an original course's music.
  • Decoding: managed MP3 (NLayer), Ogg Vorbis (NVorbis), FLAC, WAV/RF64, AIFF and BRSTM; M4A/AAC, Opus, WebM, WMA through an installed FFmpeg (never downloaded). Tags and cover art from ID3v2, Vorbis comments, FLAC pictures, MP4 atoms and FFmpeg; covers tint the row.
  • Conversion: 32 kHz DSP-ADPCM BRSTM with block-aligned loops. Loudness is matched (BS.1770) to the original being replaced, measured as the game plays it (first track in races, all tracks for Pulsar menu music) from Retro Rewind's files or the player's game disc image. The original's 0x3F volume byte is carried over and raised before a -1 dBFS look-ahead limiter kicks in. Louder/Quieter per row.
  • Loops: loop points from the file (smpl, LOOPSTART tags, BRSTM); otherwise a repeat is found in the music (band-spectrum self-similarity, refined to the sample by cross-correlation); otherwise the ending crossfades into the start.
  • Final lap: faster (+6% speed and pitch, like Pulsar), faster with the same pitch (WSOLA), or unchanged.
  • Page: search, sorts (cup order, A-Z, changed first, by type), preview player for originals, music packs and converted songs (PlaySound on Windows, afplay on macOS, paplay/pw-play/aplay/ffplay/play/mpv on Linux), one song for every console's version of a course, music pack import from .zip or folders matched by file name, packs installed on the Patches page shown per row, reset all, pending changes until Save.
  • Install: songs are written into a "Custom Music" patch with the highest priority, so the existing Patches pipeline copies them into RetroRewind6/ Patches; conflicts with higher-priority patches are reported.

Documentation: WheelWizard/Documentation/CustomMusic.md.
Tests: WheelWizard.Test/Features/CustomMusic.

Purpose of this PR:

Custom music is one of the most common ways players personalise Retro Rewind. Today they have to:

  • find out which .brstm file belongs to which track (Retro Rewind tracks use creator file names from Pulsar's config),
  • convert songs with BrawlBox, VGAudio or similar tools,
  • guess loop points and volume,
  • copy everything into a patch by hand.

This PR adds a Custom Music page to the sidebar, under Patches. It lists every piece of music Retro Rewind can play. Drop any audio file on a row and it is converted, loudness-matched to the music it replaces and looped. Nothing touches the game until Save, which writes the songs through the existing Patches pipeline.

How to Test:

  1. Make sure Retro Rewind is installed. Optionally set the game disc image in settings, so the original game's music can be previewed and measured.
  2. Open Custom Music in the sidebar. Every course, arena, menu and jingle is listed, grouped by cup. Try the sort options (cup order, A–Z, changed first, by type) and the search box.
  3. Press ▶ on a few rows to preview the original music.
  4. Drag a song (MP3, FLAC, OGG, WAV, AIFF or BRSTM; M4A/Opus/WebM/WMA if FFmpeg is installed) onto a row. It converts, the row shows the cover and title, and the tooltip shows loudness and loop details. Use Play your song in the row menu to hear the converted result.
  5. Open the row menu on a course that exists for several consoles (e.g. a Rainbow Road) and choose Use for all N … tracks.
  6. Drop a music pack .zip (BRSTMs named like n_Circuit32_n.brstm) or a folder onto the page. The files are matched to their tracks by name.
  7. Press Save. A Custom Music patch appears on the Patches page with the highest priority. Launch Retro Rewind and check the music in a race, including the final lap, and in the menus.
  8. Back on the page:
    • Reset a row, or use Remove all custom music in the gear menu, then save. The patch is updated, or removed when nothing is left.
    • Enable a music pack on the Patches page. Its rows show "Music from ".

Unit tests: dotnet test (new tests in WheelWizard.Test/Features/CustomMusic).

What Has Been Changed:

All feature code lives in WheelWizard/Features/CustomMusic. The design notes, including how Mario Kart Wii and Pulsar load music, are in WheelWizard/Documentation/CustomMusic.md.

  • Catalog
    • Original game streams, with names checked against revo_kart.brsar.
    • Retro Rewind tracks and arenas read from Binaries/Config*.pul: CUPS section, embedded BMG names and creator file names. This follows Pulsar's strm/<name>_n / _N / _final / _F lookup.
    • Checkpoint music parts (_n2, _n3, …), tracks that borrow an original course's music, and Retro Rewind's own menu music.
  • Decoding
    • Fully managed MP3 (NLayer) and Ogg Vorbis (NVorbis), both MIT licensed with no native code.
    • Built-in readers for FLAC, WAV/RF64, AIFF/AIFF-C and BRSTM.
    • FFmpeg is used for M4A/AAC, Opus, WebM and WMA only when the user already has it installed; it is never downloaded.
    • Tags and cover art come from ID3v2, Vorbis comments, FLAC pictures, MP4 atoms and FFmpeg. Folder art is only used for album-tagged songs.
  • Conversion produces 2-channel 32 kHz DSP-ADPCM BRSTMs with block-aligned loops.
    • Loudness: integrated loudness (ITU-R BS.1770) is matched to the original. The original is measured the way the game plays it: only the first track in races, all tracks for Pulsar menu music. It is measured from Retro Rewind's files, or from the disc image for the original game's music.
    • Volume byte: the original's Pulsar volume byte (header offset 0x3F) is carried over. When a song needs more level, the byte is raised first, and only then does a look-ahead limiter hold peaks at −1 dBFS.
    • Loops: loop points in the file are kept. Without them, a repeat in the music is found (band-spectrum self-similarity, refined to the sample by cross-correlation). If there is no clean repeat, the song falls back to a crossfade.
    • Final lap file: +6% speed and pitch (same as Pulsar's speed-up), +8% tempo at the same pitch (WSOLA), or unchanged.
  • Page
    • Sorting, search and per-row volume adjustment.
    • A preview player using OS facilities only: PlaySound on Windows, afplay on macOS, and the first available of paplay/pw-play/aplay/ffplay/play/mpv on Linux.
    • Same-course families, music pack import, and recognition of packs installed on the Patches page.
    • Pending changes with Save/Discard.
  • Install
    • Songs go into a "Custom Music" mod, so ModsLaunchService copies them into RetroRewind6/Patches like any other patch.
    • The mod gets the highest priority, and the page reports conflicts with higher-priority patches.
  • Outside the feature folder:
    • Sidebar entry (Layout.axaml).
    • DI registration (SetupExtensions.cs).
    • Music note, stop and pause icons (Icons.axaml).
    • Strings (en.yml).
    • The two decoder packages (WheelWizard.csproj).

Related Issue Link:

N/A (new feature)

Discussion Points:

  • Data location: the library (song-to-slot assignments and converted files) is stored under Wheel Wizard's data folder in CustomMusic/, so it survives Retro Rewind updates.
  • BrawlBox silence bug: Pulsar already patches the BRSAR size and channel checks (BRSARPatches.cpp), so replacements can be any length.
  • New dependencies: NLayer 3.0.0 and NVorbis 0.10.5.
  • Translations: only en.yml has the new strings; other languages fall back to English.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2be12

Dropping a folder that contains an inaccessible subfolder can close the app. Edits made while a save is running can look saved when they were not installed. Some imported songs, such as multi-track BRSTM files, ID3-tagged AAC files and tagged MP3s, can decode incorrectly. These should be fixed before merge.

- Around line 59-60: Update AudioFileDecoder.DecodeAsync to accept and propagate
the target slot’s PlaysAllTracks setting through its overloads, then use it when
decoding BRSTM data via BrstmReader so race music uses the first track while
menu music retains every track.

Review comments at
@WheelWizard/Features/CustomMusic/Audio/Formats/CompressedReaders.cs:
- Around line 10-16: Update `LooksLikeMp3` to skip the ID3v2 tag and any padding
before checking for an MPEG audio frame, and return true only when the frame
sync is present and the layer bits are not `00`. Keep ADTS AAC classified as
non-MP3 so `AudioFileDecoder.DecodeAsync` can route it to FFmpeg.
- Around line 45-50: Remove the redundant gapless trimming in Mp3Reader because
NLayer 3.0.0 already applies the LAME delay and padding. Convert each decoded
channel in planar directly to an array, preserving all samples and leaving
unrelated readers unchanged.

Review comments at
@WheelWizard/Features/CustomMusic/Playback/MusicPreviewService.cs:

CachedClips, to 1–2 clips so the singleton retains fewer large decoded buffers;
leave unrelated WAV and memory-copy behavior unchanged.

Review comments at
@WheelWizard/Features/CustomMusic/ViewModels/CustomMusicViewModel.cs:
- Line 465: Update the directory enumeration in ExpandDropAsync to recurse while
skipping inaccessible folders, and convert enumeration IO or access errors into
an OperationError instead of letting them escape. Preserve the existing
supported-audio filtering and song collection behavior.
- Around line 522-531: In the SaveAsync flow, snapshot each item’s Current entry
before awaiting service.SaveAsync, build the entries to save from that snapshot,
and assign each item’s Saved value from its snapshotted entry afterward.
Preserve changes made while the save is running as unsaved; only clear an item’s
Error if its Current still matches the saved snapshot.

Review comments at @WheelWizard/Resources/Languages/en.yml:
- Line 843: Update the volume_offset translation so it interpolates %{amount}
without adding a second dB unit; MusicSlotItem.Details passes a value already
formatted by FormatDb.

- Dropped BRSTMs are decoded the way the target row plays them: the first
track for races, all tracks for Retro Rewind menu music (also for pack
  previews).
- MP3 detection looks at the first frame after an ID3v2 tag, so ID3-tagged
AAC files go to FFmpeg instead of NLayer.
- Drop the duplicate gapless trimming; NLayer 3 already trims the LAME and
  iTunSMPB encoder delay and padding.
- Keep at most two decoded preview clips in memory.
- Folder drops skip inaccessible subfolders and report I/O errors instead
  of throwing.
- Saving snapshots the rows first, so songs changed while saving stay
pending, and unused files are only deleted once nothing is pending.
- Remove the duplicated "dB" from the volume adjustment tooltip.
