Summary

POST /api/memory/remember never read the request type: every row got the type inferType() guessed from the content, which is fact unless the text contains a hint word such as "prefer" or "decided". The MCP memory_store tool, the SDK remember() helper and the OpenClaw, OpenCode and Pi integrations all send type, and it was dropped without an error. On one workspace, 20,950 of 28,478 memories are fact, including rows the caller had explicitly stored as decision or daily-log.

The route now stores the requested type when one is given and infers it only when none is.

Changes

  • platform/daemon/src/routes/memory-routes.ts
    • The remember body accepts type. A non-empty string is trimmed and stored as is. undefined or null falls back to inferType(), as before. Any other value (a number, an empty or blank string) returns 400 type must be a non-empty string, the same rule and message the memory modify path already applies to type.
    • The requested type applies to the single-row path and to every chunk of oversized content. /api/hook/remember forwards to this route, so it gets the same behavior.
    • The type is free-form, like the modify path: the daemon already stores types outside MEMORY_TYPES (inferType() returns issue, rule and learning), so restricting it to that list would reject values the daemon writes itself.
    • The type check runs before the agent is registered, so a rejected request writes nothing.
  • platform/daemon/src/mutation-api.test.ts: tests for the requested type overriding inference, trimming, undefined/null still inferring, the structured-body path, a dedupe hit keeping the stored type, invalid values returning 400 without writing a row, and the type reaching every chunk.
  • platform/daemon/src/routes/utils.ts: parseMemoryType is the one parser for a requested type, used by remember and by modify (PATCH /api/memory/:id and the batch modify). It keeps the rule above and also rejects a type longer than 64 characters (MAX_MEMORY_TYPE_CHARS) with 400 type must be at most 64 characters. Before, neither path had a length limit. The longest type in my workspace is 14 characters (recommendation).
  • platform/daemon/src/mutation-api.test.ts: a 64-character type is stored and a 65-character one returns 400 without writing a row, on remember and on PATCH.
  • web/docs/src/content/docs/api/memory/write-lifecycle.md: the remember request body now shows type, with how it is validated and when it is inferred; the PATCH section states the same limit.
  • web/docs/src/content/docs/memory.md: type inference is described as the fallback when the request gives no type.
  • scripts/event-loop-contract-baseline.json, docs/event-loop-contract-audit.md and the siteToken strings in memory-routes.ts: line references refreshed after the inserted lines (again after the type parser); the legacy marker count holds at 144.

Done locally:

  • mutation-api, memory-capture-admission, memory-routes-curator, internal-fetch, daemon-auth-guard-colocation and analytics tests: 116/116 pass. Against the route on main, six of the seven new tests fail; the one that passes checks the unchanged inference fallback.
  • @signet/daemon typecheck, Biome on the changed files, comments:check, the production comment ratchet and audit-event-loop-contract tests pass.
  • After the type length limit (bbcec10b6): mutation-api 41/41; the same six suites 104/104; the three new tests fail against the previous head. comments:check, audit-event-loop-contract (24/24), Biome on the changed files and the pre-commit typecheck pass.

Not done: the full workspace bun test and a run against a live daemon.

Notes

  • When the content deduplicates to an existing memory, the existing row is returned with its stored type; the requested type does not overwrite it. That matches how the route already treats other fields on a dedupe hit, and a test pins it.
  • /api/hook/remember forwards its body unchanged, so a hook caller that sends type now has it stored, and an invalid type gets the 400, the same way an invalid tags already does on that path. RememberRequest does not declare type, so the bundled harnesses do not send it.
  • The type is stored verbatim apart from trimming; there is no case folding, so Decision and decision stay different types.
  • The 64-character limit on type is my proposal, not a value taken from a spec. The repository rules ask to bound untrusted input at the boundary, and before this change type had no bound on either remember or modify. Remember has no request size limit either: oversized content is chunked, not rejected, so a very long type would be copied onto every chunk and into every prompt that lists memories. 64 leaves a wide margin over the longest type in a real workspace (14 characters). Maintainers may prefer another value, or may want to settle it together with the list of allowed types (see Decide the list of allowed memory types #2165).
  • type remains free text, with no list of allowed values. MEMORY_TYPES in @signet/core cannot be used as that list today: the daemon itself writes rule, issue and learning, which are not in it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Memory-saving requests can include an explicit type, retained for single and chunked content. If omitted or set to null, the type is inferred as before; oversized content is inferred separately for each chunk.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Supplied types are trimmed and must be non-blank strings of at most 64 characters. Invalid types are rejected with a 400 response for both saving and updating memories. Duplicate saves continue to return the existing memory’s type.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how memory types are supplied, inferred, and validated.

POST /api/memory/remember never read the request type and always used
inferType(content), so MCP memory_store, the SDK and connectors could not
set it. A non-empty string type is now stored as given, undefined or null
still infers one, and any other value returns 400, as the modify path does.
The requested type also applies to every chunk of oversized content.

Walkthrough

The /api/memory/remember route now accepts and validates an optional memory type. Valid supplied types apply to single and chunked saves; omitted or null types are inferred. Tests, documentation, and event-loop site references are updated.

Remember and modify both accepted a type of any length. Parse it in one
place, parseMemoryType, which keeps the existing rule (trimmed non-blank
string) and rejects types longer than 64 characters with a 400. The
longest type in a real workspace is 14 characters.

The type stays free text: the daemon itself writes types outside
MEMORY_TYPES (rule, issue, learning), so a fixed list would reject them.

Document type on POST /api/memory/remember and its limit on PATCH, and
say in memory.md that inference only runs when no type is given. Line
references in siteToken strings, the event-loop baseline and its report
are refreshed for the shifted lines.

Oversized remember content is split into chunks. With a requested type,
every chunk gets it. Without one, inferType runs on each chunk, so chunks
of one request can get different types. The docs said every chunk always
gets the same type.

@coderabbitai Fixed in bec8744: the write lifecycle doc now says every chunk gets the requested type, and that without a type the type is inferred for each chunk separately (memory-routes.ts calls inferType(chunk) per chunk), so chunks of one request can differ. Please re-review and approve if nothing else is open.

Agree with keeping type free-form. One normalization gap now that model-driven tool calls can set it directly.

The requested type is trimmed but not case-normalized, while the rest of the daemon compares types case-sensitively: BOOSTED_TYPES in pipeline/dampening.ts:98 (constraint, decision), results.filter((r) => r.type === "decision") in memory-search.ts:3217, and the m.type = ? recall filter in memory-search-filters.ts:38. inferType() always returns lowercase, so before this PR every stored type matched those checks.

The main callers are LLM tool calls with a free-text schema (e.g. Hermes memory_store: "Memory type, e.g. fact, preference, decision."), so "Decision" or "Daily-Log" is a realistic input. Those rows would be stored but silently miss decision boosting and type=decision filters. Lowercasing in parseMemoryType (which also covers PATCH and batch modify) would keep the free-form behavior while matching how inferred types are stored. A "Decision" -> "decision" case next to the trim test would pin it.
