3.14.3: the night of 29/30 October - efficiency trials wait for the battery - #49
The night of 29/30 October 2026, the first on 3.14.2. The keepalive held the charge limit all night: about 150 writes per hour from 23:01 to 04:57 and no lapse. The 3.14.2 fix works.
The efficiency search lost both of its trials, though, and the morning still logged an ERROR. KOSTAL KORE's applied: wrote X, the inverter currently allows Y lines show what register 1038 read throughout the night.
What happened
Time
What the log shows
23:01:05
min SOC 58 %, trial 5000 W. 1038 reads 5000 back (no applied line).
23:03:11
Settled, measuring starts.
23:08:11
Discarded: the battery drew 2 W on average at 5000 W. The SOC had not moved either (0.63 kWh missing at 23:01 and at 23:08).
23:31
1038 tapers 1550 → 122 → 56 W: the battery reached its 58 % floor, having charged later at the planned 3000 W.
00:08:15
min SOC 61 %, trial 7000 W. 1038 keeps reading 51.5 W (battery at rest).
00:10:27
Settling over → discarded: charge limit has no matching feedback after settling, counted as a failed start.
00:10:49
Last 51.5 W reading. 1038 matches 7000 from the next keepalive on: the Kostal had taken the floor about 2.5 min late.
00:10–00:23
The 7000 W stand 13 minutes after the discard, until the next 15-minute poll writes the planned 3000 W.
04:58:07
ERROR AC charge limit restore has no fresh matching feedback. The retry at 04:59:10 finds the limit restored.
A Kostal answers a raised min SOC minutes late. Meanwhile 1038 shows the battery's allowance at rest (about 50 W), or reads the setpoint back while the battery still takes nothing. The trial judged both too early.
Fixed
A trial is measured from when the battery charges
After its settling time, a trial waits until the limit reads back and the AC side takes at least AUTO_TEST_IDLE_RATIO (25 %) of the trial's power. The wait lasts up to AUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S (15 min) from the trial's start, and the measurement begins at that moment.
A trial starts only when the window leaves time for the whole wait plus the measurement (_enough_charge_left_for).
With grid import minus house consumption as the AC side, a negative difference (the battery feeding the house) counts as no draw.
When the measurement begins or the trial is judged:
Limit neither read back nor recorded (KORE before 3.0.16): a start not taken, as before.
Power readings stale: a lost trial (_count_trial_lost_to_telemetry). A stale reading never becomes the first sample and is never taken for a battery at rest.
Whole power drawn while the limit never reads back: a start not taken. The power stays in the search, and two in a row end it.
Limit taken (read back, or KORE's last_commanded_value shows the trial's power while 1038 reads the battery at rest), no draw: an idle trial, not a failed start.
Battery charging under less than the trial's power (between 25 % and 80 %): that power is out for the window (_record_failed_attempt). No failed start, no window stop.
Power sensors that are gone or stale while the trial waits are a lost trial, not an idle one.
_verify_ac_charge_limit leaves a trial that has not started measuring alone for the whole wait. This applies to an unconfirmed trial and to a confirmed one whose readback falls back to the rest value under its standing command. At the end of the wait it delegates to the sampler's judgement (_begin_auto_measurement).
With the trial's command standing in KORE's record, a lower 1038 reading during the measurement ends only the trial ("the battery may take only X W"). It counts a failed attempt for that power and does not stop the search for the window. This holds in both the sampler and the verification. Without a record, a lower reading still stops the search, as before.
A trial that ends between polls hands the limit back at once
The power sampler, the 15-s check and the limit verification (called by the keepalive and the min SOC check) each request a refresh when they end a trial, so the plan's limit goes back on immediately. The verification schedules the refresh instead of awaiting it, because it may run inside a refresh itself.
The morning
The first restore of the charge limit without fresh feedback logs at INFO. In 3.14.2 the condition also required not _pending_reset, but the min SOC restore sets _pending_reset (crash safety) just before the AC limit restore, so the line still read ERROR. Only the retry count decides now.
_within_entity_range logs at INFO when the captured value is capped to the entity's maximum (22047 → 12540 W, the inverter's own "unlimited", every morning). Capping up to the minimum stays a WARNING.
Not changed
03:10: the nightly inverter Server device failure lasted about 8 s. KORE retried, ICN paused at 0 W while the grid meter was untrusted, and both recovered at 03:10:22. That is correct behaviour.
The 15-minute verification still logs AC charge limit is 51 W, below the 3000 W we wrote - leaving it at DEBUG. It writes nothing, and the keepalive keeps the limit alive anyway.
KORE
Puma7/KostalKore#94: about 2200 INFO lines per night for repeated 1038 writes, and the applied line names "BMS taper near full or empty" for a battery at its floor.
Review rounds
Three Codex findings and seven CodeRabbit findings were confirmed, fixed with tests and counter-checked:
The verification judges the end of the wait like the sampler.
A floor under a standing command counts a failed attempt, in both paths.
A confirmed trial under a standing command keeps waiting.
A negative derived AC side is no draw.
A reading gone stale is a lost trial, at the deadline and at the measurement start.
The trial time budget includes the wait.
A full draw without a readback is no fault of the power.
A trial the verification ends hands the limit back at once.
One CodeRabbit suggestion was declined with reasons, and CodeRabbit withdrew it: putting the stale check before the limit-feedback check.
the 00:08 case (51 W at rest, then charging) and the 23:01 case (read back, no draw);
the idle end of the wait;
a limit neither read back nor recorded;
a draw under less than the trial's power;
a full draw without a readback, twice in a row;
the floor during a measurement, in the sampler and in the verification;
the verification during and at the end of the wait;
a confirmed trial falling back to the rest value;
a battery feeding the house on the derived side;
a stale reading at the deadline and at the measurement start;
telemetry lost while waiting;
a refresh from the sampler, the 15-s check and the verification;
the log levels of both morning lines.
Adjusted to the wait:
test_efficiency_finder: the battery draws at the end of the settling.
test_efficiency_quiet_night: idle trials run past the wait, the verification test starts after it, and the time budgets include it.
test_efficiency_verification: both still waiting at 120 s, judged at the deadline.
23 changes counter-checked by reverting each one. Every revert makes a test fail.

efficiency-search.md (EN/DE): the wait for the battery and its place in the time budget.
The keepalive held the limit all night. Two efficiency trials were lost
to the Kostal's slow answer to a raised min SOC: at 00:08 1038 read the
battery's 51 W at rest for 2.5 minutes after 7000 W were written, and
the settling ended first - a start not taken; at 23:01 5000 W read back
while the battery drew nothing for seven minutes - an idle trial.
- After its settling a trial waits until the limit reads back and the
battery takes a quarter of the power, up to AUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S
(15 min) from its start. A limit KORE recorded under a battery at rest
is an idle trial at the end of the wait, not a failed start; a battery
charging under less than the trial's power is another power. Power
sensors that fall silent while waiting are a lost trial.
- With the trial's command standing in KORE's record, a lower reading
during the measurement or at the verification ends only the trial,
not the search for the window.
- A trial that ends between polls asks for the plan at once; the 7000 W
stood 13 minutes until the next poll.
- The morning's first restore without fresh feedback logs at info:
_pending_reset is set already once the min SOC is back. Capping the
captured limit to the entity's maximum is info, not a warning.

The efficiency finder now waits for battery draw before starting a trial measurement and distinguishes idle trials, telemetry loss, and insufficient draw. Trial endings can trigger an immediate coordinator refresh. The release also updates restore and clamp logging and increments the manifest version to 3.14.3.
The efficiency finder can wait up to 15 minutes for battery draw before measuring. It checks telemetry and KORE command feedback, then classifies idle, lost-telemetry, unconfirmed, and insufficient-draw cases. Tests and documentation cover the new timing and outcomes.
The sample listener and 15-second staleness check request a coordinator refresh when a trial ends. Tests check both refresh paths.
Restore logging and release version custom_components/inverter_charge_night/coordinator.py, custom_components/inverter_charge_night/manifest.json, tests/test_night_3143.py
Clamping a captured value to the entity maximum now logs at INFO. The first failed restore attempt logs at INFO, while subsequent retries remain ERROR. The manifest version changes to 3.14.3.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 1e975
A discarded trial can retain its charge limit until the next plan refresh. Fix the refresh handoff or accept this bounded risk before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1e975
The battery-draw wait improves measurement validity, and existing connection-protection controls remain in place. However, a trial ended by periodic verification can still leave its charging setting active until a later planning update. No new attacker-facing access path was established.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: The new verifier deadline and telemetry termination routes can clear trial ownership without requesting the planning refresh needed to replace its actuator setting. The retained last-written value can therefore remain active until another planning update. The underlying cleanup gap existed before this PR, but the newly added terminal routes inherit it; sampler-triggered termination now performs the handoff correctly.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated consequence is control drift at the configured inverter’s charging-limit actuator. The inspected change does not establish cross-tenant access, credential exposure, or additional service authority; broader deployment exposure remains unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Actuator writes remain serialized through the shared write lock, reject stale window ownership or unloading, apply connection and control-maximum limits, and refuse an initial overwrite without a readable original value. These controls constrain trial authority independently of measurement classification.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Verification still prioritizes connection protection over trial ownership. It handles unreadable feedback through floor protection and handles excessive readback through charging pauses and bounded rewrites. Shutdown cancels and awaits verification tasks to contain writes after window termination.

Codex on #49:
- At the end of the wait the verification counted a failed start
without looking at KORE's record of the command; a battery at rest
was idle, not a start not taken. It now leaves the judgement to
_begin_auto_measurement, which the sampler uses.
- A trial whose battery took less than its power while the command
stood was discarded without a failed attempt, and the same power was
tried again at once. Both the sampler and the verification count it.

CodeRabbit on #49: a Kostal can read the trial's limit back and then its
50 W at rest until the raised floor takes hold. The verification took
that for an ended trial inside the wait. Before the measurement, with
KORE's record of our command standing, it now waits like an unconfirmed
trial and leaves the judgement at the deadline to the sampler's rule.
A lower limit without our command standing still stops the search.

Do not treat negative derived AC power as charging.
5219-5219: Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Do not treat negative derived AC power as charging.
If grid import is below house consumption, _charge_input_w() returns a negative value. Line 5219 makes that value positive, so _auto_trial_charging() can start measurement while the battery is discharging or idle. The resulting trial can then consume a failed attempt instead of waiting for charging. Preserve absolute-value handling for a single sensor that reports charging as negative, but require positive draw for the grid-minus-house path.

Update _charge_input_w() so absolute-value handling remains for a single sensor
that reports charging as negative, but the grid-minus-house calculation returns
no charging value when its derived power is zero or negative. Ensure
_auto_trial_charging() only starts a measurement when that derived path
indicates positive draw.

CodeRabbit on #49: with grid import minus house consumption as the AC
side, the difference falls below zero when the battery feeds the house.
Taken as a size it counted as charging: the wait for the battery ended
early and the trial could count a failed attempt instead of an idle
one. The derived side counts only a positive difference; a single "sent"
sensor keeps either sign.

@coderabbitai I confirmed your outside-diff finding "Do not treat negative derived AC power as charging" (review 5709458489) and fixed it in 6b9cf69.
_auto_trial_drawn_w() now counts only a positive difference when the AC side is grid import minus house consumption. Below zero the battery is feeding the house, so it draws nothing. A single "sent" sensor keeps either sign, because it may count charging as negative. _charge_input_w() is unchanged: the measurement uses the signed difference, and its orientation is already fixed at +1.
Test: test_a_battery_feeding_the_house_is_no_draw_on_the_derived_side uses grid 300 W, house 4000 W and battery 3500 W under a recorded 3000 W trial. It expects the trial to keep waiting after the settling and to count as one idle trial at the deadline, with no failed attempt. Counter-check: restoring abs() makes the test fail.
Full suite: 1928 passed on HA 2025.2 and on the newest release. mypy and pyright are clean.
_auto_trial_drawn_w() clamps negative grid-minus-house power to zero. It retains abs() for a single “sent” sensor.
_charge_input_w() keeps the signed measurement value. Derived AC power retains orientation +1.
The regression test checks that the trial waits after settling, then counts as idle at the deadline without a failed attempt.
I did not rerun the tests or type checks. The 1,928 passing tests and clean type checks are your reported results.

Codex on #49: at the end of the wait the trial was judged idle - or as a
power the battery takes only in part - without asking whether the power
readings were still fresh. A sensor last reporting 0 W at second 830
passes the 885-s check and is stale at 900 s; that is no battery at
rest and must not exclude the power. _begin_auto_measurement checks the
age first, for the sampler and the verification alike.

Include the start wait in the trial time budget.
If charging begins near the 15-minute deadline, _enough_charge_left_for() still reserves only the two-minute settling period before measurement. A trial can therefore start with enough window time under this check but not enough time to finish its minimum measurement. Budget AUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S for the time check so the finder does not start a trial it cannot complete. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject stale telemetry before starting measurement.
A stale numeric reading can satisfy _auto_trial_charging(), which skips the start-wait freshness check. _begin_auto_measurement() then stores that reading as the previous sample. When a fresh reading arrives, the freshness check sees only the new state, and trapezoidal integration can include the stale previous value. CodeRabbit on #49:
- A stale reading that looked like charging became the measurement's
first sample, and the next fresh one integrated it. The age check now
comes first in _begin_auto_measurement, for every outcome.
- A trial was started with only the 2-minute settling budgeted before
its measurement; the measurement may begin 15 minutes in. The window
must now leave time for the whole wait.

@coderabbitai I confirmed both outside-diff findings from review 5709554667 and fixed them in 5eb5215.
Reject stale telemetry before starting measurement._discard_auto_test_if_telemetry_stale() now runs at the top of _begin_auto_measurement(), right after the feedback check. It covers every outcome: measurement start, idle, and restricted power. The check is therefore in place both for the sampler and for the verification's deadline delegation.
Test: test_a_stale_reading_never_starts_the_measurement uses 7000 W read back and charging, with the "sent" sensor last reported 140 s before the start. It expects a lost trial and no measurement start.
Counter-check: without the check, this test and the stale-deadline tests fail.
Include the start wait in the trial time budget. The time check in _enough_charge_left_for() now budgets AUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S before the measurement instead of AUTO_TEST_SETTLE_S. The energy budget is unchanged, because the battery takes nothing while the trial waits.
test_no_trial_the_window_end_cuts_short_of_its_energy now expects 25 min to be too short and 40 min to be enough at 1 kW (15 + 18 min).
test_a_metered_trial_gets_the_time_and_charge_for_its_longest_run now expects 19, 28 and 38 min (15 + 5, 15 + 20).
Counter-check: reverting to the settling budget makes both fail.

Do not record full draw as a reduced-power failure.
At the start deadline, a standing KORE command allows _begin_auto_measurement() to continue. If the limit readback is still lower, _auto_trial_charging() is false even when fresh power telemetry shows the full requested draw. The code then calls _record_failed_attempt(), although this is not partial charging.
Keep matching readback as a requirement for measurement, but handle full draw with a separate no-readback outcome instead of recording a reduced-power failure.

@Puma7 The inspected code addresses both findings.
Stale telemetry:_begin_auto_measurement() checks telemetry freshness after the limit-feedback check, before measurement start, idle classification, or restricted-power classification. This preserves the limit-first failed-start behavior in the existing review guidance.
Trial time budget:_enough_charge_left_for() includes AUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S before the required measurement duration. The energy budget retains its settling allowance; it does not add energy consumption for the full start wait.
The cited regression tests contain the expected stale-reading and window-budget assertions. The EN/DE documentation also includes the 15-minute start wait.
I did not run tests, counter-checks, or type checks. The 1,931 passing tests and clean mypy/pyright results are your reported results.

Learning: Within repository "Puma7/InverterChargeNight", only for files matching one of ["custom_components/inverter_charge_night/coordinator.py"]: When reviewing efficiency-trial window eligibility in custom_components/inverter_charge_night/coordinator.py, check that _enough_charge_left_for() budgets the full AUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S before the required measurement duration, rather than using only AUTO_TEST_SETTLE_S. Apply this time allowance to both power-sensor and energy-meter trials. Keep the energy budget separate: retain the settling-energy allowance, but do not replace it with energy consumption for the full start wait, because the battery takes no power while waiting.

Learning: Within repository "Puma7/InverterChargeNight", only for files matching one of ["custom_components/inverter_charge_night/coordinator.py"]: When reviewing efficiency-trial startup classification in custom_components/inverter_charge_night/coordinator.py, preserve the limit-first check in _begin_auto_measurement: if neither the limit readback nor KORE's recorded command matches the trial power, classify the trial as a failed start regardless of power-sensor freshness. If either matches, check power telemetry freshness before starting measurement or classifying the trial as idle or restricted-power. Do not require stale power telemetry to override the independent failed-start classification.
…power
CodeRabbit on #49: at the end of the wait, with our command standing, a
battery drawing the trial's whole power under a 1038 reading that never
followed was filed as one that takes only part of it, and the power was
left out of the window. The measurement needs the readback, the power
did nothing wrong: from AUTO_TEST_MIN_FOLLOW_RATIO of the power on it is
a start the readback did not follow, counted as a failed start before
the limit is confirmed, so two in a row still end the search.

@coderabbitai I confirmed your outside-diff finding "Do not record full draw as a reduced-power failure" (review 5709667228) and fixed it in 1e975a3.
At the end of the wait, with our command still standing, a draw of at least AUTO_TEST_MIN_FOLLOW_RATIO (80 %) of the trial's power under a 1038 readback that never followed is now its own outcome. The trial is discarded as "the battery takes the trial's X W, but its limit reads Y", and the start counts as failed through _count_failed_start(). It is not recorded as a failed attempt, so the power stays in the search. A matching readback is still required before a measurement begins. _record_failed_attempt() is kept for partial charging only, meaning a draw between AUTO_TEST_IDLE_RATIO and the follow ratio.
The limit is not confirmed on this path. If it were, _confirm_auto_test_limit() would clear the start-failure count first, and the bound would never trigger.
Test: test_a_full_draw_without_a_readback_is_no_fault_of_the_power uses 7000 W drawn, 1038 reading 51 W and a recorded 7000 W command. It expects one failed start, no failed attempt, and, for a second such trial in a row, charge_limit_not_taken. Counter-checks: removing the branch fails the test, and confirming before the branch fails the "two in a row" assertion.
Full suite: 1932 passed on HA 2025.2 and on the newest release. mypy and pyright are clean.

Schedule a refresh when the deadline discards the trial.
_verify_ac_charge_limit() is awaited by both _keep_charge_limit_alive() and _verify_and_restore_min_soc_locked(). Its deadline branch can call _begin_auto_measurement(), which discards the trial without requesting a refresh. The 15-second callback then skips the inactive trial, so the trial setpoint can remain applied until a later plan refresh.
Schedule the refresh only for an active-to-inactive transition, without awaiting it:

CodeRabbit on #49: the keepalive and the min SOC verification call the
limit verification outside a poll. A trial it discarded - at the end of
its wait, or for a limit that fell - left its power standing until the
next poll. _verify_ac_charge_limit is now a thin wrapper that schedules
a refresh when the trial ended in it; the check itself moved unchanged
to _check_ac_charge_limit. Scheduled, not awaited, as the verification
may run inside a refresh.

@coderabbitai I confirmed your outside-diff finding "Schedule a refresh when the deadline discards the trial" (review 5709853307) and fixed it in ca2045a, slightly more broadly than you suggested.
_verify_ac_charge_limit() is now a thin wrapper. The check itself moved unchanged to _check_ac_charge_limit(). The wrapper records whether a trial was active, runs the check, and on an active-to-inactive transition schedules async_request_refresh() via hass.async_create_task(..., name="inverter_charge_night_trial_ended"). It schedules the refresh rather than awaiting it, because the verification may itself run inside a refresh. This covers every way the verification can end a trial: the deadline delegation, the floor under a standing command, a foreign lower limit, and connection protection. The keepalive and the min SOC verification therefore hand the limit back to the plan straight away, as the sampler and the 15-s check already do.
@Puma7 The inspected code addresses the refresh finding.
_verify_ac_charge_limit() detects an active-to-inactive trial transition around _check_ac_charge_limit(). This covers trial termination beyond the deadline path.
The wrapper schedules async_request_refresh() instead of awaiting it. This avoids awaiting a refresh from verification that may already run inside a refresh.
The parametrized regression test checks both outcomes: a refresh is scheduled when the deadline ends the trial, and no refresh is scheduled while the trial remains active.
I did not run tests, counter-checks, or type checks. The 1,934 passing tests and clean mypy/pyright results are your reported results.

Schedule async_request_refresh() through hass.async_create_task rather than awaiting it, because verification may itself run inside a refresh. Do not schedule this trial-ended refresh when the trial remains active. Check regression assertions for both a deadline that ends the trial and an ongoing start wait.

When draw reaches AUTO_TEST_MIN_FOLLOW_RATIO without matching readback, the branch discards the trial and calls _count_failed_start().
The branch returns before _confirm_auto_test_limit(). This preserves the consecutive-failure count.
The branch does not call _record_failed_attempt(). The power remains available to the search.
The regression test checks one failed start, no failed attempt, and charge_limit_not_taken after a second consecutive failed start.
I did not run tests, counter-checks, or type checks. The 1,932 passing tests and clean mypy/pyright results are your reported results.

Do not call _confirm_auto_test_limit() on this path, because it clears consecutive start failures. Require matching readback before measurement. The night of 29/30 October 2026, the first on 3.14.2. The keepalive held the charge limit all night: about 150 writes per hour from 23:01 to 04:57 and no lapse. The 3.14.2 fix works.

A trial is measured from when the battery charges
AUTO_TEST_IDLE_RATIO(25 %) of the trial's power. The wait lasts up toAUTO_TEST_START_WAIT_S(15 min) from the trial's start, and the measurement begins at that moment._enough_charge_left_for)._count_trial_lost_to_telemetry). A stale reading never becomes the first sample and is never taken for a battery at rest.last_commanded_valueshows the trial's power while 1038 reads the battery at rest), no draw: an idle trial, not a failed start._record_failed_attempt). No failed start, no window stop._verify_ac_charge_limitleaves a trial that has not started measuring alone for the whole wait. This applies to an unconfirmed trial and to a confirmed one whose readback falls back to the rest value under its standing command. At the end of the wait it delegates to the sampler's judgement (_begin_auto_measurement).A trial that ends between polls hands the limit back at once
The power sampler, the 15-s check and the limit verification (called by the keepalive and the min SOC check) each request a refresh when they end a trial, so the plan's limit goes back on immediately. The verification schedules the refresh instead of awaiting it, because it may run inside a refresh itself.
