Issue

Closes #1247

Summary

  • Before: Guardrail entries in the config blob could only reference a validator_config_id, and the only way to turn one off was to delete it.
  • Now: Each entry can be either a reference or an inline validator spec (type, on_fail, per-type params). Both kinds take an is_enabled flag (default true).
  • Inline type is limited to InlineValidatorTypeEnum: gender_assumption_bias, pii_remover, profanity_free, topic_relevance_llm.
  • Disabled entries stay saved in the config version but are never fetched or sent to the guardrails service.
  • Validators are sent in blob order (_prepare_validators). Inline specs get stage stamped and is_enabled stripped, because the service's validator schemas forbid extra fields. on_fail is passed through, so the service applies its own default when it's omitted.
  • A reference the service doesn't return is dropped with a warning.
  • GuardrailEntry is an explicitly tagged union. Without the tag, InlineValidator (which allows extras) could swallow a reference dict that carries a type.

Original PR description

Guardrail entries in the LLM config blob can now be either a validator_config_id reference or an inline validator spec. Both accept is_enabled (default true): disabled entries stay saved in the config version but are never fetched or sent to the guardrails service.

Validators are sent in blob order, inline specs get their stage stamped and is_enabled stripped (the service's validator schemas forbid extras).

📝 Walkthrough

Guardrail configuration now accepts validator references and inline specifications. The service skips disabled entries, fetches configs for enabled references, and prepares the remaining validators for input or output validation.

Changes: Guardrail Configuration and Execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define guardrail entry variants
backend/app/models/llm/request.py, backend/app/tests/models/llm/test_request.py
ConfigBlob accepts validator references or inline specifications. Both entry types support is_enabled, which defaults to True. Tests cover parsing, extra fields, unsupported types, and JSON round-trips.
Prepare and validate enabled entries
backend/app/services/llm/guardrails.py, backend/app/tests/services/llm/test_guardrails.py, backend/app/tests/services/llm/test_jobs.py, docs/wiki/modules/llm-call.md
The service skips disabled entries, fetches enabled references, preserves configuration order, assigns the selected stage, and omits is_enabled from serialized validator specs. Tests cover no-op cases, missing references, inline validators, input validation, and output validation. Documentation describes the updated guardrail schema and preparation behavior.

The guardrail model, service logic, tests, and related documentation are within issue #1247 scope. The documentation change also changes the prompt_template interpolation description to say that interpolation is llm-chain-only. Issue #1247 does not request a prompt-template behavior or documentation change, and the summary shows no related implementation change. This is unrelated scope.

479-479: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Optional: use enum.StrEnum.

Ruff flags InlineValidatorTypeEnum (UP042) for inheriting from both str and Enum. StrEnum is available because the project requires Python 3.12 or later. The change does not alter JSON serialization. It is a low-value style fix.

Update InlineValidatorTypeEnum to inherit from enum.StrEnum instead of combining
str and Enum, importing StrEnum as needed; preserve the enum members and their
existing JSON serialization behavior.

## Key pydantic/SQLModel schemas (`models/llm/request.py`)
- `LLMCallConfig` — one-of: saved reference (`id` + `version`) XOR ad-hoc `blob` (validator-enforced)
- `ConfigBlob` — `completion` + optional `prompt_template` (`PromptTemplate.template`, plain string) + `input_guardrails`/`output_guardrails`
- `ConfigBlob` — `completion` + optional `prompt_template` (`PromptTemplate.template`, plain string; `{{input}}` interpolation is llm-chain-only) + `input_guardrails`/`output_guardrails`. Each guardrail entry is either a `Validator` reference (`{validator_config_id}`) or an `InlineValidator` spec (`{type, on_fail, ...per-type params}`, `type` limited to `InlineValidatorTypeEnum`: gender_assumption_bias, pii_remover, profanity_free, topic_relevance_llm); tagged union `GuardrailEntry`. Both carry `is_enabled` (default true). Disabled entries are never fetched or sent. `services/llm/guardrails._prepare_validators` POSTs the rest in blob order, with `is_enabled` stripped and `stage` stamped on inline specs.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the "{{input}} interpolation is llm-chain-only" claim. It contradicts the Gotchas section.

Line 30 now says that {{input}} interpolation is llm-chain-only. Line 54 says the opposite in bold: execute_llm_call replaces {{input}} for every caller. The two statements disagree. A reader who trusts Line 30 can set prompt_template on a non-chain call and assume nothing happens. Line 54 warns that this silently drops the user input. Restore the earlier wording on Line 30, or point to the Gotcha.

📝 Proposed fix
-- `ConfigBlob` — `completion` + optional `prompt_template` (`PromptTemplate.template`, plain string; `{{input}}` interpolation is llm-chain-only) + `input_guardrails`/`output_guardrails`.
