Issue

Closes #1246

Summary

  • Before: Text evals (fast / v2) ignored the config's stored input/output guardrail validator IDs — the golden dataset query went straight to OpenAI and the response was never checked.
  • Now: The eval job is guardrails-aware. Each query runs through input_guardrails (if configured) before the LLM call, and each response through output_guardrails (if configured).
  • Eval LLM calls reuse execute_llm_call (app/services/llm/jobs.py) with recording disabled, so eval traffic doesn't create llm_call rows or production traces.
  • Guardrail outcome flows through retry, merge, scoring, cosine, judge and traces; results rows now include guardrail, input_to_llm, output_from_llm.
  • Docs: new docs/wiki/modules/guardrails.md, updated evaluations / llm-call wiki pages and plan docs/plans/evaluation-guardrail.md.

How to test

1. Create the config with guardrails — POST /api/v1/configs

{
  "name": "eval-guardrail-test",
  "description": "Config with input/output guardrails for fast eval",
  "commit_message": "initial",
  "config_blob": {
    "completion": {
      "provider": "openai",
      "type": "text",
      "params": {
        "model": "gpt-4o-mini",
        "instructions": "You are a helpful assistant.",
        "knowledge_base_ids": ["vs_xxxxxxxx"]
      }
    },
    "prompt_template": {
      "template": "Answer the question: {{input}}"
    },
    "input_guardrails": [
      { "validator_config_id": "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001" }
    ],
    "output_guardrails": [
      { "validator_config_id": "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000002" }
    ]
  }
}

validator_config_id must be the ID of a validator config that already exists in the guardrails service. The UUIDs above are placeholders.
prompt_template is optional. If you include it, it must contain {{input}}, or the fast eval is rejected with a 422 error (config_template_missing_input).
knowledge_base_ids is optional. Include it only if you want the knowledge_base metric.
The response gives you the config's id and version, which go into the next call.

  1. Start the fast eval — POST /api/v1/evaluations
{
  "dataset_id": 123,
  "experiment_name": "guardrail-eval-run-1",
  "config_id": "<id from step 1>",
  "config_version": 1,
  "run_mode": "fast"
}
run_mode already defaults to "fast", so you can leave it out.

v2 variant — POST /api/v2/evaluations. Same body without run_mode, plus two optional fields:

{
  "dataset_id": 123,
  "experiment_name": "guardrail-eval-run-1",
  "config_id": "<id from step 1>",
  "config_version": 1,
  "duplication_factor": 1,
  "callback_url": "https://your-webhook.example.com/eval-done"
}

duplication_factor only works with v2 (S3) datasets; on any other dataset it's rejected with a 422.

  1. See what the guardrails did
    GET /api/v1/evaluations/{id} returns the results. In row format, each row has guardrail, input_to_llm and output_from_llm.

📝 Walkthrough

Fast text evaluations now use the shared LLM execution path with guardrail checks. Results capture guardrail outcomes and related LLM text. Blocked rows are classified separately from failures and excluded from scoring inputs. Evaluation traces and documentation include these fields and behaviors.

Changes: Fast evaluation guardrail flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared LLM execution and guardrail outcomes
backend/app/services/llm/chain/types.py, backend/app/services/llm/guardrails.py, backend/app/services/llm/jobs.py, backend/app/services/llm/mappers.py, backend/app/tests/services/llm/*, docs/wiki/modules/guardrails.md, docs/wiki/modules/llm-call.md, docs/wiki/INDEX.md, docs/wiki/domain-map.md, docs/plans/evaluation-guardrail.md
The shared execution path now reports guardrail outcomes and retryability. It can omit call recording and metrics, and can request file-search results. Guardrail auth failures are distinguished from content blocks.
Fast evaluation calls and result mapping
backend/app/services/evaluations/fast.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/fast.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/response_parsing.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/retry.py, backend/app/tests/api/routes/test_evaluation_fast.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_fast_llm_call.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_fast_judge.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_response_parsing.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_retry.py, backend/app/tests/services/evaluations/*, backend/app/tests/utils/llm.py, docs/architecture/kaapi-evaluations-ARCHITECTURE.md, docs/plans/evaluation-guardrail.md
Fast evaluation workers pass a resolved config blob to the shared LLM call. The path maps blocked and rephrased outcomes, captures usage and file-search chunks, and retries retryable results. Validation rejects configured prompt templates without {{input}}.
Blocked-row scoring and trace propagation
backend/app/crud/evaluations/fast_results.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/fast_cosine.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/fast_traces.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/merge.py, backend/app/crud/evaluations/score.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_fast_cosine.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_fast_results.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_fast_traces.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_merge.py, backend/app/tests/crud/evaluations/test_fast_judge.py, backend/app/api/docs/evaluation/get_evaluation.md, docs/wiki/modules/evaluations.md, docs/plans/evaluation-guardrail.md
Response and trace data include guardrail status, LLM input, and pre-output-guardrail text. Blocked rows are unscoreable and are excluded from embeddings. Fresh trace fields replace cached values when present, including when explicitly null.

from the SRP point of view: this is too much a big function and we are continue adding the things in this function. so this adds a if record_call: same condition in multiple places like line:717, line:784 etc. that mixes two jobs in one function: running the call, and deciding what gets recorded.

so the PR already solves this for tracing with _tracer = tracer if record_call else trace.NoOpTracer(). could we do the same for the other side effects? Pass in a recorder object, and give evals a no-op version:
like as:

  1. Create the LLMCallRecorder (e.g. in app/services/llm/recorder.py) with create_call, started, finished and tracer, plus a NullLLMCallRecorder whose methods do nothing.
  2. execute_llm_call takes recorder: LLMCallRecorder | None = None instead of record_call: bool. It defaults to the real recorder, so /llm/call and /llm/chain don't change.
  3. inside the function, call the recorder unconditionally:
recorder.started(provider=provider_name, model=model_name, operation=operation)
...
llm_call_id = recorder.create_call(session, request=..., job_id=job_id, ...)

NullLLMCallRecorder.create_call returns None, so the existing if llm_call_id: guards already skip the update path.
4. In for evals where we are using this function in fast.py, pass recorder=NullLLMCallRecorder(...).

so this removes every if record_call: same condition and most of the indentation changes in this diff. It also means a side effect someone adds later can't accidentally leak eval traffic into production metrics, because they'd forget a flag check.

same thing for this, this function does three jobs, it's validate the item, calls the llm and decides the guardrails status. so i am thinking to move the status logic into a helper function. then this function just reads as validate --> call to llm --> build it.

weird, this return 5 unnamed values and i see the apply_output_guardrails also return 3. so every caller had to change just to add one field. i think, we can create the small dataclass like InputGuardrailResult and then would stop that from happenin again.

can we use the GUARDRAIL_TRACE_KEYS, like loop over the GUARDRAIL_TRACE_KEYS the same way here does.

- apply_input/output_guardrails return a GuardrailResult dataclass
  instead of positional tuples; they already mutate query/result in place.
- fast eval: error check runs first and lets guardrail blocks through;
  generated_output always read via _response_text.
- build_trace_records loops over GUARDRAIL_TRACE_KEYS.
- test helper defaults record_call=False.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Move fast-eval guardrail status mapping into `_guardrail_fields` so
  `_llm_call_for_item` reads as validate -> call -> build.
- guardrails.md: describe `GuardrailResult` instead of stale tuple
  arities, and note the rephrase row is only saved when `record_call=True`.
- Drop the working-plan doc `docs/plans/evaluation-guardrail.md`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Extract config resolution, guardrails, proxy execution, STT/TTS uploads,
and call-record writes into focused helpers sharing a _CallContext that
owns the record_call gate and traceability attributes. No behavior change.

at a high level, it looks good. we need to release it to staging and test the Guardrails functionality. We can further optimize it in a new PR.
